Please call the rectory office to make arrangements. Sacrament of Marriage: Couples planning to marry are to make arrangements at least nine months prior to their wedding date. Diocesan Guidelines regarding Marriage Preparation must be followed. The Catholic party/parties is/are to be registered, active members in the parish. Anointing of the Sick: Please call the church office if you have a family member or friend in the hospital who would like to receive the Sacraments. The homebound and parishioners in nursing homes should also receive the Sacrament of the Sick and Holy Communion. Parish Membership: New members are always welcome! At the funeral rites, especially at the Funeral Mass, the Christian community affirms and expresses the union of the Church on earth with the Church in heaven in the one great communion of saints. Though separated from the living, the dead are still at one with the community of believers on earth and benefit from their prayers. The Church recognizes the spiritual bond that still exists between the living and the dead. In addition, the Church proclaims its belief that all the faithful will be raised up and reunited in the new heavens and new earth, where death will be no more. Order of Christian Funerals, 1998, General Introduction, Number 6. Diocese of A-J, Liturgy Office This Thursday, November 1, is a Holy Day of Obligation. Catholics are expected to participate at Mass on the Solemnity of All Saints. The Church celebrates with all the men, woman, and children who have entered the kingdom of God and are seated as saints in glory. It is our humble prayer that someday this will also be our feast day. Check the Mass schedule for Thursday s solemnity. Remember on Friday, November 2, the Church commemorates All Souls Day. Special Hurricane Collec on Next Weekend Nov 3/4: Thousands of people lost their homes and their places of employment due to the recent hurricanes that have impacted especially Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. Please be generous in response to a Special Hurricane Relief Collec on being taken up in all parishes throughout the diocese. All dona ons will be forwarded to Catholic Chari es USA which administers the funds directly to those in most need. Keep the people of those places in your prayers. SAVE THE DATE: Thanksgiving Meal Prep for the Saint Vincent DePaul Soup Kitchen on Wednesday, November 21st in the Church Hall in Daisytown. Transporting to the Soup Kitchen on Thursday morning so it can be served on Thanksgiving Day! We will start at 7:30am on Wednesday, 11/21/2018, and will be in the hall for as long as it takes. Even if you can stop by for a few hours to help out, it would be greatly appreciated. The meal will consist of Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes & gravy, sweet potatoes, corn, fresh carrots, cranberry sauce, and of course pie! However, we are asking for your donation of a homemade pie to be brought to the Church Hall on Wednesday, 11/21, so that your baking talents can be shared and enjoyed by many of God s children (please be sure the pie is in a pan that doesn t need returned). We also will be delivering meals either Wednesday evening, or Thanksgiving morning to any homebound parishioner or those in the community who would like a prepared Thanksgiving meal! If you would like a meal delivered, or know of someone who may need a meal, please contact the church office with the information. We would again like to ask each family to donate $1 towards the Thanksgiving Meal to help with costs in order to continue this annual Thanksgiving Meal. Donations accepted now through Thanksgiving just place it in an envelope labeled: Thanksgiving Meal your help is greatly appreciated. We will have a second collection on November 10/11. The Altar & Rosary Society have purchased a new Holy Water Dispenser for the Daisytown Church. The dispenser is being dedicated to the Deceased Members of the Altar & Rosary Society. We will have the dedication & blessing on Sunday, November 4th at 11AM

3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB In our Gospel account this weekend we hear the familiar story of Bartimaeus, the blind man who called out to Jesus so that he might see. Most of us are not physically blind but we can be spiritually blind, and we too need healing so that we may see with the eyes of faith. Encountering Jesus changed the course of his life forever. We must now ask ourselves if our spiritual encounter with Jesus in our weekend liturgy helps us to see with the eyes of faith in the business of our daily lives? This story then is also about each of us. Is there anyone among us who has not experienced the need to cry out, Jesus, have pity on me? The other element in this story is the insistence of the crowd for this man to be quiet as the blind beggar calls out the name of Jesus but he persists despite their attempt to silence him. He only asks to be made whole again. In the light of this encounter, we too can become spiritually blind by focusing simply on the material things of this life rather than the promise of eternal life. Jesus has not come to bestow power and honor but to open our eyes to the new spiritual, social and material realities made possible when God reigns supreme in our lives. We need to open our hearts and loosen our tongues to proclaim the good news of our salvation if we only keep our hearts fixed upon that eternal goal. There are two kinds of blindness in the scriptures. One is physical, the other is spiritual. We will see what we are looking for. If we are looking for good things, we see good things. We choose what we desire to see, and if we are looking only for the best in other people, that is what we will see. If we are looking for the worst, then that is only what we will see. Perhaps if we look for the love and the beauty that God has placed in His creation and in His beloved, we will then see how blessed and loved we are, and that might be enough to enable us to recognize His divine presence in others as well. Catholic Ministries Drive 2018 This years goal is $21,446. As of October 25th, we have received donor cards totaling $13,644. Several of you still have your donor cards/statement from the church totaling $1, We recently mailed out blank CMD Donor cards for those who have not returned their cards to the office. If you would please turn them into the office as soon as possible so that we may forward them to the Diocese. Deadline to make a donation is December 15th. We are $7,802 shy of making the goal requested by the Diocese. Please remember ALL PAYMENTS should be made to Ss. Gregory & Barnabas Church. We will submit your card to the Diocese along with a check from the church according to what you gave. WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC LIFE EXPLAINED Question: If someone is interested in becoming a priest, how does he go about it? Answer: Discerning a vocation can happen in any number of ways. It might come as a surprise to the person called or to family or friends. Sometimes it is a gradual process, and other times it is as quick and bright as lightning. Regardless of how it starts, a vocation to the priesthood or religious life requires a process of discerning, testing, and preparing. The best place to begin would be with lots of prayer, receiving the sacraments, and attending daily Mass whenever possible. Then talk to your pastor or a priest you know and trust. Your diocese may have a vocation director who can provide you with guidance and information. The Serra Club is also a great resource for information and contacts to help you discern if indeed God is calling you. Remember that many young Catholic men have considered the priesthood. Some are ordained and others realize this is not their calling. However, we are all called to be of service to others as we practice our faith. These are extraordinary times in which we live, and they require an extraordinary witness to faith and to God s presence in the world. Our work, our ministry as Catholics, is to be the body of Christ with and for others. The Church needs priests. If God calls you to ordained service in the church, He will provide the grace, direction, and support you need. Just listen and respond with all your heart, mind, and soul. Slavick Servers: Slavicks Dietz Collecting Stuff One autumn day, my daughter and I were enjoying a visit to a small town filled with shops and antique stores. She was inspecting every teacup and heirloom hankie. When I tried to hurry her along she became indignant and responded, Mother, you have your stuff. I am just beginning to get mine. On the way home she explained her philosophy: We spend the first part of life gathering our possessions, the second part enjoying them and the third part giving them away. Life is all about your stuff. This story reminds me yet again how we pass on our values to our children. When we put emphasis on a particular way of living, we can expect our children to do the same. Children are sorting out what they see and hear, and deciding how they want to live. It is our role as parents to offer formation that is grounded in values that are consistent with our faith. Coveting things, whether they belong to our neighbor or simply entice us from a shop window, leads us right into the hands of our consumer society. Society preaches that things will make us happy. Our faith teaches us the opposite that happiness is found not in acquiring things but in knowing Jesus Christ. We encourage our children to live without accumulating more things by choosing not to live that way ourselves. Family life should be more focused on people and times shared than on getting an additional pile of stuff. Used with permission from: Every Day Catholic. 28 W. Liberty St., Cincinnati, OH or Everyday Stewardship It was many years ago, but I remember it as if it was yesterday. Before most good basketball players left college early for the NBA draft, the Duke Blue Devils won back-to-back championships in men s basketball. The morning after the second championship, I drove to the campus bookstore in order to be one of the first to purchase commemorative T-shirts: one for me and several more for my parents and wife. A crowd was at the door of the store when I arrived, long before it was open for business. When I finally walked inside, I looked around and saw one shirt in particular I liked. I walked over to it, and as I got close to reaching out to pick it up, a little old lady literally ran into me, spun me around, grabbed the shirt, and shrieked, It s mine! As if there was only one shirt in the entire store! Neither of us were entitled to that shirt. In fact, we aren t entitled to much in this life. Rather than searching to get what we think we deserve or trying to beat out others for a better position in this world, our God calls us to focus on helping others to experience the many gifts available to them in this life. We are called to serve instead of be served. Our mission is to sacrifice ourselves and what we desire on this earth for the Kingdom of God. If we are willing to essentially assault someone to get to a T-shirt, what will we do when the stakes are higher? After my initial shock, I wasn t really angry with that lady at Duke. After all, I would like to think that if she simply asked me for it I would have given it to her. At least, I hope I would have. Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS
