The great sin is that of uncaring complacency. Every community of faith is charged with finding ways to share its resources to those in need. A caring heart, a heart full of mercy seeks to help the poor. Our Diocese has very active members of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society that reaches out to each person in need at the local level. (The Church in the annual calendar remembers Saint Vincent de Paul this Tuesday.) Have you shared some of your wealth with the Saint Vincent de Paul Society? The worse response would be apathy. It is mercy that leads us to reach out to those in need. Lord, give us a merciful heart! 2016, Liturgy Office JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY WHY DO WE DO THAT? CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Ques on: Who is St. Jerome and why is he so significant that we honored him with a feast on September 30? Answer: Biblical scholars and translators owe a great debt to the model and standard that St. Jerome ( ) set for all biblical scholarship. Jerome was considered the greatest biblical scholar of his day, conversant with La n, Greek, and Hebrew. Jerome eventually became Pope Damasus ( ) personal secretary. In the West, La n was overtaking Greek as the language of the common people. The pope desired a transla on of the Bible that would be accurately translated from the original languages into the language and idiom of the people. Previous La n transla ons existed, but they were poor in quality. Jerome set about this task and spent the rest of his life me culously transla ng. He is credited with the transla on of the Bible known as the Vulgate, a La n transla on intended to address the needs of the common people. That transla on became the standard and the only one used by Catholics un l modern mes. Catholic Chris ans did not ac vely engage in a similar process un l 1943, when Pius XII allowed Catholic scholars once again to go back to the original languages and translate an accurate and me culous version of the Bible into the languages of the common people. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB Needless to say, our parish picnic last Sunday was so much more than I ever expected. I was completely blind-sided, which is probably good, otherwise I would have never attended. The really scary part for me is that I never had a clue of what was planned, which also makes me wonder what else I am not aware of that is going on in the parish. Thank you ever so much for the 40th anniversary celebration of my ordination to the priesthood. To tell the truth, it was my classmate Fr. O Neill who reminded me of that anniversary a few months ago when he came back to town for a funeral Mass, otherwise I would still be clueless. I still have not opened many of my cards, probably knowing that when I do, I need to send notes of thanks which I know I am not great at doing but I promise to give it my best try, so please be patient with my tendency to procrastinate, just ask Kristen in the front office! It is my hope that I am able to remain here until retirement/death, better the first option rather than the second option! I am humbled and extremely grateful for your continued support and encouragement. I consider this to be my home, not just an assignment given me by our diocesan office. On an entirely different subject, despite my weight loss, my recent physical exam was very good. I admit my eating habits are not the best nor the most nutritional but I am trying to improve in that area as well. Speaking of which, many of my shirts and trousers no longer fit me. I went through a period of time when big and baggy was my preference in clothing style. It no longer works for me at 67! I have many shirts, both dress and casual that no longer work on this smaller body. The same is true for dress trousers, some with sales tags still attached with waist size 34. Before I pack these up and give them to Goodwill or the Salvation Army, if you are aware of anyone who could benefit or put them to good use, please let me know and I would be glad to part with them at no cost. Finally, as we are anticipating the start of another year of religious education, it is also the expectation of the program that the students attend one of the weekend Masses to fulfill the Sunday obligation as required by the Church. If they fail to do this on a regular basis they are not eligible to receive the sacrament of Confirmation in the 11th grade despite their faithful attendance at class. This is a cause for confusion in the minds of your children, for what they are being taught in class is being disregarded or contradicted by the words and example of the parents. Please do not do this to your children if you truly love them! 26th Sunday in Ordinary Time "'My child, remember that you received what was good during your lifetime while Lazarus likewise received what was bad.'" Today's Gospel reading is Jesus' parable about a "rich man," whose name we do not know, and a "poor man," named Lazarus. The story shows both men after death, the rich man in torment, and Lazarus enjoying the comfort that he was deprived of during his earthly life. It's important to understand that this teaching does not imply that having wealth leads to eternal punishment. Rather, we look at how the rich man USED his wealth and see there the cause of the problem. As Jesus says, this man "dressed in purple garments and fine linen and dined sumptuously each day." Clearly, he had abundant wealth and focused it all upon serving himself. To further the accusation against him, all the while "lying at his door was a poor man... who would gladly have eaten his fill of the scraps that fell from the rich man's table." But the rich man paid Lazarus no heed, and THIS is why he now suffers. Because he would not deign to "suffer" at all during his life by sharing his linen clothing or feeding his poor neighbor covered with sores. This selfishness became the rich man's SELF-condemnation. He put himself in torment because he blatantly disobeyed God's law to love his neighbor. This challenging parable urges us to examine our own behavior and ask how WE use our wealth--whatever size our bank account may be. Are we willing to assist our neighbors in need? Or do we walk by the poor, excusing our own comfort? Let us heed Christ's warning today that such earthly comforts are, in the long run, short-lived. 4 Families & the Gospel September 25 Luke 16:19-31 In today s gospel the rich man died and was condemned to a place of torment because he ignored the poor. He asked Lazarus to go and warn his five brothers to change their ways. Evidently ignoring the poor was a family pattern. Is your family sensitive to the poor?
