3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB HOSPITALIZED After the Christmas lights and decorations are taken down and stored in the attic for another year, the darkness of winter and the cold takes hold of our spirits. Even our Church designates this liturgical season as Ordinary Time. However, the term ordinary for our liturgical year is derived from the word ordinal, or numbered, as the Sundays in Ordinary time are numerically ordered. But it does not mean that this liturgical season is boring or without life and joy. It can be a time in which our faith can flourish and grow, greening as in the spirit of this liturgical season and made visible in the green vestments and altar cloths. It is meant to be a time to make our discipleship visible, not only through our words but also through our deeds, a time to get down to the business of living in Christ and being His Church. We are called to take the time in this ordinary season to contemplate the sacred mysteries, the life of Christ, and our life together as His disciples and being Church for our world. The weekly cycle constitutes our hearing the Word as we gather around the table of the Lord and are then sent forth to proclaim the good news of our salvation to a very troubled earth. Our scripture readings give us stories of individuals being called by God. Our Gospel readings will take us through seven Sundays when we will hear over and over again narratives of Jesus teaching, exorcising demons, and healing the sick. There are miracles of feeding a large crowd with a few loaves and fish, of Jesus walking on the water and calming the stormy sea. Many of these events greatly disturb the Pharisees and scribes, even those who might have thought themselves relatives of Jesus and think He is not in His right mind. Jesus and his disciples journey back and forth multiple times on the Sea of Galilee and huge crowds gather to hear His words and witness His power. The evangelists portray the Pharisees and scribes as troubled because Jesus teaches and heals on the Sabbath and His disciples do not follow their religious traditions. Often His own disciples do not understand His teachings. Our scriptures during this season are stories of call, questioning, and perseverance, which is also the story of our own journeys of faith. How to live in the interim before the Lord comes again is the subject of Paul s letters to the Corinthians which we will be hearing in these next weeks before our season of Lent begins. Perhaps as we celebrate these next few weeks of ordinary time in our liturgical year, we might consider how we might be more open to the presence of our Lord in the ordinary routine of our daily lives. HOLY DAYS OF OBLIGATION IN THE YEAR OF GRACE 2018: Mary, the Holy Mother God NO OBLIGATION IN Monday, January 1, 2018 The Ascension of the Lord... Gregory and Barnabas Parish all my life until I moved away from Johnstown in For those who don t know, I have been training for the USA Bobsled and Skeleton team for over three years. On October 18th, I found out I made the North American Cup tour! Traveling and competing for the United States has always been a goal of mine. I am beyond excited for this opportunity! To help raise money for my journey, I am raffling items I have made. This is a hardwood end-grain cutting board crafted from raw cut maple and walnut boards. Inlaid into three of the sides are walnut accent strips. If you are interested in donating for a chance on the drawing, please see contact Becky Barefoot for tickets at I appreciate your help and thank you! In addition, if anyone is interested in being a sponsor, please contact me at: BarefootDan2@gmail.com. None that we are aware of. PLEASE, if you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home contact the office. The hospital may take your church information, but we are not always notified. Fr. Bob likes to get to the hospital in a timely manner, but cannot if he doesn t know. Thanks for your help. PRAYER CHAIN Do you know someone who needs prayers? 4 Families and the Gospel December 31 Luke 2:22-40 The gospel shows Mary and Joseph weren t perfect parents. Have you ever been amazed and astonished at what came out of your child s mouth, then you are in good company so did Mary and Joseph. Parenting is tough but it is also the stuff of holiness. One Liners If God is watching us, the least we can do is be entertaining.
