It likewise asks that the Christian faithful continue to offer prayer for deceased family members, friends, and fellow parishioners. The annual celebration of All Souls Day, the commemoration of all the faithful departed on November 2, attests to this honorable practice. Masses celebrated for the dead on the anniversaries of death or other significant times continue the Church s prayer and remembrance. For Catholic Christians, cemeteries, especially Catholic cemeteries, call to mind the resurrection of the dead. Is your image of God bigger than the labels and categories into which we often place Him? God has been acting in our world from the beginning of time and has been intimately wedded to creation for thousands of years before the creation of humanity. Did you ever consider that God was present when dinosaurs traveled the earth? God s presence surprises us, but He can be clearly seen when people, regardless of their faith or creed, rise to the occasion and do the right thing. We have seen this countless times throughout history when people have put their differences aside, sacrificing their own security and needs to help others. God is much larger than we make Him out to be. Try to be present and mindful and not miss God working in all moments of life. If we are not attentive, God s presence can go unnoticed. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB If we think back on our grade school days, usually there was always one or two students in the classroom who would tattletale to the teacher if another child did something wrong while their teacher may have been out of the room or had their back to the students while they were writing something on the blackboard. They quickly learn a lesson from their classmates, however, that nobody likes a tattletale. But the disciples in our Gospel account this weekend are tattling on others. We saw someone doing something in Your Name, Lord, but because he is not in our group, we stopped him. Jesus responds with might be the equivalent of, No one likes a tattle-teller but whoever is not against us is for us. This, however, seems to be a very low bar admonition but it is also followed by a stern and disturbing warning as well: Causing a little one to sin is worthy of death, but it is also followed by a series of prophetic hyperboles, intended exaggerations to make the point that the kingdom of God is worth any price. Our culture can be so eager to define who is in and who is outside the group. If you are not with us, then you are against us. But Jesus does not draw the lines so starkly. Jesus tells his disciples essentially that it is by their actions that you shall know them. This is also made clear in our Gospel account this weekend. The apostle John tried to stop someone who seemed to be invoking the name of Jesus to cast out a demon. But Jesus responds by condemning the disciples for their jealousy and intolerance, warning against an elitist view of discipleship that diminishes or even seeks to eliminate the good done by outsiders. Jesus asks us to be His disciples simply by taking on the small acts of kindness that can mirror the love of God. He calls us to be prophets by living lives of integrity and honesty that reflect the justice and peace of God. Jesus promises us that even the simplest act of compassion, the Gospel cup of water given in love will be honored by God in His kingdom. All those in need have a claim on our charity because they too belong to Christ. The Spirit is at work in ways and through people we might never expect. May we open our hearts and minds to that same Spirit so as to transform the face of this earth and fill it with the fire of His divine life and love. Catholic Ministries Drive 2018 by now you should have received your donation card for the 2018 Drive (blank cards can be found in the vestibule). You are welcome to add more to your payment, please don t hesitate to call Kristen at the office if you have ANY QUESTIONS This years goal is $21,446. Please turn them into the office as soon as possible so that they are turned in in a timely manner in accordance to the Diocese request. Thank you! 100% of your gift supports 14 ministries like Mandeville Diocese, Jamaica! Humbled and Blessed! These are words spoken often and by many in our diocese after experiencing a mission trip to our twin sister diocese Mandeville, Jamaica, West Indies. A story of Faith, Hope & Charity. Located more than 1,608 miles away from Central Pennsylvania, the diocese s Twinning Project was first initiated in Twenty years later, the relationship continues as parishioners turned missionaries remain steadfast to aid our neighbors in need by helping with their hands in Jamaica or with their hearts here at home. Jamaica is mostly rural and is the third poorest nation in the Caribbean. Health facilities, running water and public transportation are not readily available. Most children end their education after sixth grade. Sunday transportation is non-existent and it is not uncommon for the faithful to walk three or more miles one way to Mass. Currently administering the sacraments and much-needed social services to nearly 7,000 Catholics are 17 diocesan priests, six brothers and 34 sisters. The diocese covers 1,300 square miles and pastors often have to travel several hours to preach the Gospel. Parish structures, especially housing for priests and religious, are limited as they often double as schools. With so much poverty, almost all are dependent upon the diocese for support. In turn, Mandeville counts on our diocese to help them. To address their many needs, parishioners do short-term mission trips that provide hands-on support, such as building or repairing structures. Through school and parish initiatives, care packages of school, personal, and medical supplies are shipped daily. In 2017, the Catholic Ministries Drive allocated $37,484 including the important Ash Wednesday collections held across the diocese. Our Jamaican brothers and sisters are poor. But if you ask anyone who has personally experienced a mission trip or heard stories from a visiting priest at Mass, they will tell you that the parishioners, despite their poverty, are all spirit-filled as they celebrate their personal relationship with Jesus Christ. As one mission-goer said, I went there to help them and in turn they helped me. They are always grateful and giving. I felt humbled and blessed! Partnering with the Diocese of Mandeville allows all in our diocese the opportunity to live as missionary disciples. Whether one experiences a mission trip first-hand, financially supports Mandeville collections, or simply keeps the poor in prayer; sustaining this relationship allows us to continue His works of Mercy by following his teaching. Whatever you do for the least of your brothers that you do unto Me. HOSPITALIZED PLEASE, if you have a loved one admitted to the hospital or nursing home contact the office. The hospital may take your church information, but we are not always notified. Fr. Bob likes to get to the hospital in a timely manner, but cannot if he doesn t know. Thanks for your help. 4 Families and the Gospel September 30 Mk 9:38-43,45,47-48 The words in today s gospel, Whoever gives a cup of water in the name of Christ will not lose their reward hits us at home. As parents we gain our reward when we bring water to a frightened child in the middle of the night, or Kool Aid to parched 5-year olds, or hold ice chips to the fevered lips of a spouse.
