The brevity of our life on earth reminds believers that there is more. Christ died and rose from the dead to share this gift with those who believe. At the death of a Christian, whose life of faith was begun in the waters of baptism and strengthened at the eucharistic table, the Church intercedes on behalf of the deceased because of its confident belief that death is not the end. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB HOSPITALIZED From a distance of two thousand some years, we might wonder why Jesus did not live within the great Temple of Jerusalem. There the people could come to hear His words and witness the miraculous deeds of healing. But Jesus brought His message to the people, the places where they lived and worked. With that thought in mind, we as believers come to the Temple, our churches, where we find the presence of our risen Lord both in word and sacrament, but then we are sent into the world to proclaim the good news of our salvation, our reason to live in hope despite the darkness of sin and selfishness that often times diminishes or ignores that message of love. You are the messengers, the disciples sent forth to live and proclaim His presence to those who no longer come to Mass, who need to hear the good news rather than the headlines that so often greet us in the morning paper or the evening news on TV. At times our lives seem so frenetic, simply moving from one activity to the next. There are things that we need to do each day but in our gospel account this weekend we hear of Jesus driven by that same purpose, but we also need to do what Jesus did, and that was to take the time for prayer and reflection each day as well. He wakes before dawn to have some time to Himself, but even that sacred moment quickly vanishes in the midst of the day s activities. If we do not schedule in our daily to do list a time for prayer, it is not going to happen. We all need that deserted place in our lives where we can reconnect with our God. I have learned that lesson in my own life and if put into practice, it does make a difference in attitude as to how we handle the demands made upon us in any given day. In trying to imitate the compassion of Jesus for others, we can work our own miracles of charity and generosity through which our families and communities can be restored to hope and trust in the God who loves us. Our season of Lent begins on February 14th, which also happens to be Valentine s Day. The love of our lives first needs to be Jesus Himself, for it is through recognition of His love for each of us that will inspire and enable us to be the signs of His presence for others. I suggest that we all need to schedule a daily encounter with the Lord in prayer that lasts longer than a minute or two. There are a variety of books for prayer and daily reflections that could be used for that purpose. Check on-line at Barnes and Noble for additional resources to make this Lenten season a time of spiritual growth and renewal for yourself and it just may change how we deal with the pressures and demands made upon us in this life. Don t simply give up something, do something this Lent that will bring you closer to the Lord Jesus, which in turn can also change the manner in which we deal with others at time. This could make all the difference in each of our lives, and hopefully not end with Easter Sunday but continue every day of each year. Now that is the season of Lent that this world so desperately needs. Caregivers Need Care Too Caregiving is hard work. And lots of us are doing it. Recent statistics show that 66 million Americans are caring for a parent, spouse, child, family member or friend. Most of the attention is directed to the individual who needs our care. We take them to doctor appointments, help them with housework, make sure they are eating properly, helping them navigate the confusing health care system. It takes time, energy and creative maneuvering to schedule caregiving into our already busy lives. There is another side of caregiving that often gets overlooked: caring for the caregiver. Caring for ourselves. It might seem selfish to complain about the situation when we really are so much better off than the person who needs our assistance. Feelings of guilt may crop up when we let ourselves dwell in thoughts that our own lives might be suffering. It s easy to think we should be able to do it all be a helpmate to our spouse or parent; take care of the kids; hold down our jobs; and have time left over to give our loved one the emotional help they truly want. It often leaves us exhausted, searching the Internet for answers, lonely and anxious, not knowing where to turn for help because we aren t the ones who need help. Or are we? The truth is that caring for someone we love is not only a one-way relationship. Each side needs replenishment at times. We must remember to try to maintain our own health, happiness and important relationships while caring for a frail loved one. But how do we do that? Develop a Self-Care plan Put into writing goals for self-care activities. What provides us joy and refreshment? Is it exercise, gardening, friends, church, playing piano? Find your Team Who are the people in our lives who keep us in balance? Who is honest enough to tell us when they see us at our wit s end? Who is willing to talk to us at any time, even midnight? Maintain Your Own Health It s easy to neglect ourselves when our focus is entirely on someone else. Look for Outside Help State-sponsored agencies offer resources that may help with caregiving needs. Be a Family Member Getting outside help may free you up to have the time for a loving relationship with your loved one. That s truly what they want too. The Catholic Campus Ministry students of Pitt Johnstown will be going on a mission trip to Germantown, Pennsylvania during the irst week in May. Students will spend the week serving in homeless shelters, soup kitchens, schools, nursing and retired priests homes, parks, and many other service facilities. This is the ministry's fourth annual mission trip, and students normally participate. The trip is partially funded by UPJ however, a large portion of the expense falls on the students and on the ministry program. The ministry also takes donations at all times during the year to supplement our many events including three retreats each year and our yearly trip to Washington, DC to attend the March for Life.
