We cannot be forgiven without the mercy of our God. Upon death Catholics have a Funeral Mass for the deceased believer. At this Mass we call upon God s mercy for the dearly departed. We place our dead in the merciful hands of God. Are the faithful departed in heaven, hell or purgatory? Only God knows; the Lord is judge. We gather to call upon the loving mercy of our Redeemer that our dead be at peace in the love and forgiveness of God. 2018, Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown, Liturgy Office Choir Prac ce is every Wednesday in Bon Air at 6:30PM. 3 FROM THE DESK OF FATHER BOB HOSPITALIZED In our scriptures for this first Sunday of our Lenten journey we find God speaking to Noah after the flood waters have receded, establishing a covenant with Noah and his descendants by the sign of a rainbow in the heavens as a visible reminder of the promise that flood waters shall never again destroy the earth. Creation itself is an affirmation that life is good and beautiful. Our God blesses, forgives, restores, and saves His children at every time and age in human history. It is brought to fulfillment many centuries later in the death and resurrection of His crucified Son on Calvary, the ultimate Lamb of sacrifice offered for our salvation. In our time and place the sacrament of Baptism is the sign that we are His beloved sons and daughters destined for a glorious and eternal life. It opens that door to that ultimate and perfect union with our Creator. We were not made to be lost, fated for destruction, but designed for life, both now and eternal. Hell is eternal alienation from God. The kingdom of God is already in our midst. We are called during the season of Lent to claim our citizenship in that heavenly realm of justice and peace but to also make that kingdom visible in our time and place as well. Jesus tells us in our Gospel that now is the hour of fulfillment. We should not think of this Lenten season as simply a time of penance and self-denial but also one of bringing to this troubled earth His presence and the promise of an eternal life of joy if we but follow in His way of life each day. It is not a goal we can set for retirement, when we will have the time and money to finally enjoy the things we have been waiting for, but a season when we are called to focus on the price that He was willing to pay for our redemption. Jesus tells us that now is the hour of fulfillment. Each of us must decide for ourselves what that entails. It might be a sacrifice to give up candy for Lent but that often has an underlying motive, that of losing a few pounds. Perhaps we can all focus on the good that we are capable of doing for those in need, perhaps as simple as taking the time to visit those who live alone or in nursing homes. If our Lenten penance in some way benefits us, it is not the sacrifice of love that Jesus asks of us. The forty days of Jesus in the desert wilderness reminds each of us of the deserts of sin and selfishness that sometimes reside within our own hearts. We are called to seek first the kingdom of heaven. Unfortunately for many of us that only happens in our dying. I pray that we all might become more aware of our priorities in this life before our dying so as to live forever in His presence. Now that would be a worthy sacrifice all of us could offer to our Savior and God this Lent. WEEKLY FISH FRIES begin Friday, Feb 16th at both halls. We need plenty of volunteers to insure we continue our tradition of good dinners and service with a smile. It is a lot of work but it can also be fun!
