Please remind your parishioners of these upcoming collections and share with them my support in some suitable way. Additional information and resources can be found at the website Thank you for your dedication in the ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. Especially during this upcoming season of Lent, you are all in my daily prayers. May our most gracious Lady and St. Joseph intercede for us in all our efforts. 3 1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712) FAX: (712) ) FAX: (712) OFFICE OF THE BISHOP Lent, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, We are about to begin again the season of Lent, with its more conscious discipline of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. With these spiritual tools, we remind ourselves of our highest vocation and desire to be raised with Christ into Heaven. The ashes we receive on Ash Wednesday are a symbolic sharing in Christ s saving Passion; only in Him is the possibility of our redemption. In Lent, we commit again to the path of following our Lord Jesus Christ, even when it costs us something, as it cost Him everything. And we prepare for the Resurrection of our Lord, by offering the little sacrifices of our Lenten discipline, in solidarity with all those who belong to Christ and live in hope of His return in glory. On Ash Wednesday, we also have an opportunity to participate in the special collection for the Church throughout the world, especially in Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe. Your generous prayers and your gifts to this collection will help build churches and schools, train and educate priests and laypeople, publish Catholic newspapers, sustain orphanages, evangelize and catechize children and adults, and provide scholarships to Catholic students. Please visit to see full accounts of your gifts at work. Your solidarity makes a real difference to so many faithful in Central and Eastern Europe, Africa, and Latin America. In the same way, solidarity with the poor in our own country, and especially with those suffering a poverty of faith, is greatly needed at home as well. On the first Sunday of Lent, you will again be asked to offer a gesture of solidarity with those fellow American Catholics who, by means of our traditional Black and Indian Missions, and our Catholic Home Missions in this country, are served in Christ s bounty. I ask you, most importantly, please to pray fervently for them and for our own poor, and to be generous in offering material support to our Catholic missions in this country. Thank you for your generosity. Please continue to pray for me, and for all priests, especially in this season of Lent. Your brother in Christ, Most Reverend R. Walker Nickless Bishop of Sioux City DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY1821 JACKSON STREET SIOUX CITY, IOWA (712 DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY

DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Chancery M E M O To: All Priests, All Deacons, All School Administrators From: Dcn. David A. Lopez, Chancellor Date: 8 Feb 2017 Re: Rice Bowl activities Dear Fathers and Colleagues, With Lent comes the annual opportunity to participate in CRS s Rice Bowl campaign, as many of you do. Thank you for your support of this campaign, which benefits so many of the world s poorest. I am particularly asking if any of our schools and parishes which did not participate last year, want to participate this year. If you participated last year, you will receive the materials again this year, without having to do anything particular. Again, thank you! If you did not participate last year, and will not participate this year, again, you need do nothing. If you did not participate last year, and want to participate this year, please contact either me at the Chancery office, or CRS directly, at and click on the order materials link. The same website also has plenty of information about how the donations are used, and so forth. Blessings upon your coming Lent, with much prayer, Dcn. David 1821 Jackson Street P. O. 5 DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Office of Worship Date: 8 February 2017 To: RCIA Coordinators (Priests, Deacons, Religious or Laity) From: Fr. Lingle, Office of Worship Re: Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion The following is information concerning the Rite of Election. Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion Sunday, March 5, :00 p.m. Saint Mary Church 3 rd and Seneca Sts. Storm Lake, Iowa 6:00 p.m. Cathedral of the Epiphany 1000 Douglas St. Sioux City, Iowa 1. This information is being sent to those listed as Coordinators of Adult and/or Children's Initiation on file at the Chancery Office. Where no Coordinator is listed, it is being sent to the pastor of the parish. 2. Access to the Rite of Election Candidate and Catechumen form, please "click here". You can save the form on your computer, complete it and send it to our office via to Grace Zavala, gracez@scdiocese.org or fax; Please fill out the form and submit no later than Friday, February 17, Please indicate the correct pronunciation of the names that you list. The form and all other information can be found under Parishes in the Parish Communication section in the Contents/Worship & Liturgy tab on the right side of the screen. 3. Seats will not be assigned. Please find places for your group in the Church. 4. Catechumens called forth for election will sign a Book of the Elect as they enter the sanctuary. This is a diocesan book, and does not replace the parish Book of the Elect that you may be using. 5. Presentation of catechumens and candidates for full initiation: Fred Shellabarger, Assistant Director of New Evangelization, Catechesis and Family Life, will present the catechumens and candidates to the Bishop. Please have with you a list of the catechumens and candidates to be presented from your parish to confirm it with the master list prior to the ceremony. Office of Worship 1821 Jackson Street P. O. Box 3379 Sioux City, Iowa Ph. (712) Fax (712) gracez@scdiocese.org

6. Each catechumen needs to have a godparent (or proxy) present and each candidate must have a sponsor (or proxy). Family, friends and other interested people from your parish are also encouraged to attend. 7. Remind catechumens and candidates that this is a formal occasion, and they should dress up appropriately. Please ask them not to chew gum. 8. Some of you may have baptized Catholics who are seeking Confirmation that are participating in your RCIA program. They should not be called forward in this liturgy. While you will want to invite them to this liturgy to support their companions, the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion is intended for those who have not yet been baptized and those seeking full communion with the Catholic Church from another Christian denomination. 9. If two or more parishes participate together in the adult initiation process and wish both parishes to be presented at the same time, this can be done if you indicate your desire for this on the return sheet. Please note that we need a separate sheet filled out for each parish. 10. Since the enrollment of names, election, and call to continuing conversion take place at the diocesan celebration, the Rite of Sending is the appropriate liturgy for celebration prior to the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion. There are several variations of this rite in the ritual book, these can also be obtained by contacting the Office of Worship: If you are sending both catechumens and candidates: See RCIA, numbers 530 and following: Parish Celebration for Sending Catechumens for Election and Candidates for Recognition by the Bishop. If you are sending only candidates (no catechumens): See RCIA, numbers 434 and following: Rite of Sending the Candidates for Recognition by the Bishop and for the Call to Continuing Conversion. If you are sending only catechumens (no candidates): See RCIA, number 106 and following: Sending of the Catechumens for Election If we can provide additional information or assistance, or you become aware of any last minute changes to your list of catechumens and candidates please contact the Office of Worship ( ). The Globe will be publishing an article with the names of those who participated in the Rite of Election. Therefore, we need to have an accurate list of the parish name and town, the name of each individual being presented, and whether he/she is a candidate or a catechumen. Please submit this information with your return sheet.

DIOCESE OF SIOUX CITY Office of Worship Here is some helpful information for priests and directors to pass on to those who will be participating in the Rite on the First Sunday of Lent: Catechesis about the Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion For Catechumens and Godparents, Candidates and Sponsors The Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion, which will be celebrated on the First Sunday of Lent, marks the end of the catechumenate period, and begins the period of final of more intense preparation for the sacraments of initiation for both Catechumens and Candidates for Full Initiation. This period is called the period of Purification and Enlightenment. Up to this point, the Church has offered formation in the Catholic faith but has not made a final decision about the Catechumen's or Candidate's readiness for the initiation sacraments. The Church is now ready, officially and finally, to call them to the fullness of life with the Church this Easter. The Rite of Election and Call to Continuing Conversion will be celebrated in Storm Lake and Sioux City by Bishop Nickless. As pastor of the Diocese, it is the bishop s privilege and responsibility to call those who are ready to the Sacraments of Initiation. The Rite for catechumens is called "Election" because God elects or chooses them for the Sacraments of Initiation through the Church. From this point on, Catechumens will be known as "The Elect." Candidates for Full Initiation do not receive another title. Since already baptized, they have already been elected to be part of God's holy people. Instead, they are called to continuing conversion, that is, to "put on" Catholic spirituality, doctrine and faith in an even deeper way Jackson Street P. O. Box 3379 Sioux City, Iowa Phone: Fax:

The best way to celebrate the Rite of Election is to relax and enjoy it. Don't worry about what is going to happen. There will be a Liturgy of the Word just as it would normally be celebrated at Mass. Then the part of the rite pertaining to catechumens (the Rite of Election) follows: (As the following is described, you might walk through the various postures, responses, etc., especially if it will relieve the anxiety of any catechumens or candidates.) 1. After the Homily, the Catechumens will be called forward with their godparents. When your name is read by Fred Shellabarger, the Assistant Director of New Evangelization, Catechesis and Family Life, stand and go into the sanctuary to sign the Book of the Elect on the altar. The godparent should stand behind his/her catechumen; the godparent does not sign the Book of the Elect. After signing the book go and stand where the deacon or other minister directs, with the godparent standing behind. 2. When all Catechumens are in place, the bishop will ask the godparents a question about the readiness of the catechumens. The response to the question is "We do." Please answer loudly, clearly and together as much as possible. 3. The bishop will invite the assembly in the pews to stand, then ask them a question about their willingness to support the catechumens in their preparation. The response is, "We are." The bishop invites them to be seated. 4. The bishop will then ask the catechumens a question about their desire to enter the Church. The response is, "I do." Please answer loudly, clearly and together as much as possible. 5. The Act of Election then takes place, including another address to the godparents. When completed, a deacon (or another minister) will assist you back to your pews. 6. The Call to Continuing Conversion of Candidates for Full Initiation follows, using the same procedure as before. Candidates and sponsors are called into the sanctuary. The sponsors should stand behind their candidates. (Candidates have no book to sign.) 7. The bishop then asks the sponsors a question about the readiness of the candidates, to which they respond, "We do," as loudly, clearly and together as possible. 8. The bishop will invite the assembly to stand, and ask them a question about their willingness to support the candidates. The response is, "We are." The bishop invites them to be seated. 9. The bishop will then ask the candidates a question about their desire to fully enter the Church. The response is, "I do." Please answer loudly, clearly and together as much as possible. 10. The Act of Recognition follows, including another address to the sponsors. When completed, a deacon (or another minister) will assist you back to your pews. 11. A Prayer of the Faithful follows, then the Concluding Rite. You will want to dress up for the occasion Jackson Street P. O. Box 3379 Sioux City, Iowa Phone: Fax:
