2 President - Becky Brock, Capital District UMW President Greetings to Capital District UMW, THE SUMMONS: GO Jesus summons us to go wherever He may lead, in all places and all circumstances. Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, Whom shall I send and who will go for us? And I said, Here am I, send me! Isaiah 6:8 NRSV Fall is quickly approaching but the heat is still here. I am looking forward to some cooler days. It is time to get back in the swing of United Methodist Women. I know some units take the summer off. Some of you have fall festivals or harvest sales. Please let the Capital District know if you have events coming up. I hope your units sent in all of your reports (but I know you didn t because of the number that I received.) We still can use this information even if it is past the deadline. As we get back in the swing of things, this is a good time to bring ourselves back to the ministries. Make sure you are centered in God s word. Communicate with God continually. Do everything in God s will. Where God guides you...he provides for you. Family has always been important to me. But lately, I have been reminded over and over how family and loving and respecting them is so important. When we have hard times, usually family comes closer. When the skies are blue again, we become distant again. This goes for the family of God also. I challenge you to keep family close to your heart. We do not know the day in which we will be separated. Make memories so there will be no regrets. This advice is for God s family also. If we disagree, make amends. Don t let grudges keep you apart. I am looking forward to seeing my family, my United Methodist Women family, at our upcoming meetings. Make sure they are on your calendar. The North Carolina Conference United Methodist Women Annual Meeting will be held Saturday, October 13, at Methodist University in Fayetteville, NC. The Capital District Annual Meeting will be held on Saturday, October 20 at Brogden United Methodist Church in Dudley, NC. Capital District Local Officer Training is scheduled for November 10. Please put these 3 dates on your calendar. We look forward to seeing you. Keep up the good work for Christ, for United Methodist Women ) Becky Brock, Capital District UMW President (president@capitalumw) 617 Red Hill Road, Fremont, NC (919) (h) (919) (c)

4 Volume Volume 4 Issue 7 Issue 4 4 NC Capital NC Capital District District UMW UMW Newsletter September 1, , 2018 Greetings, UMW Readers! Program Resources Coordinator Deanna Day Our Reading Program has come to a close and it is time to make our reading resolutions for the coming year. Capital District readers have been declining for the past few years. It is hard to know if that is because we can t find time to read or because we can t find books that appeal to us An easy way to share faith and fellowship is to participate in a book club. If you haven t started one at your Church or in your neighborhood, you are welcome to join us at either of the clubs that started last year. Smithfield Book Club meets about every six weeks for lunch, brunch, or coffee at 11:00 AM at SoDoSoPa, 146 S 3rd St, Smithfield, NC The next meeting will be scheduled once the District calendar has been finalized. Please consider joining us for food, faith and fellowship! Cary Book Club meets at LaFarm Restaurant on Cary Parkway, at 6:30 PM, usually on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30. We break bread and enjoy fellowship and discussion. Our next meeting is October 18 when we will be discussing Escape from the Green Mansion Ordinary Church Women and their Extraordinary Rescue of San Francisco s Brothel Slaves by Christine Taylor. The book is available from Amazon. I would love to help another club get started this fall. Please let me know if anyone in the Raleigh area would be interested in helping me host. I am happy to visit your units or circles, help start a local book club, or simply provide study materials and cookies for your small group. I will also be testing a new book club blog that will allow you to sign into a closed Facebook or Goodreads page and respond to discussion questions about different books on this year s list. I would appreciate everyone s guidance on titles and topics for discussion. As school begins for our young Methodists, I want to remind you of a fantastic book from last year s list: The Amazing Age of John Roy Lynch by Chris Barton. (Leadership Development.) Even though it is listed as a children s book, I guarantee adults will learn something too! It is an excellent choice to read to youngsters or gift to a school or library! Grace and peace to all of you during this busy season. I look forward to seeing you this Fall at our District meetings. Deanna Day, Secretary of Program Resources

5 Volume 7 Issue 4 NC Capital District UMW Newsletter September 1, 2018 Spiritual Growth Coordinator Barbara Lee Probably because I spent 32 years as a teacher in assorted public schools, I began to think of every calendar year as having two New Year s Days. Of course, one was January 1, but the other new year for me was the beginning of a new school year. I went through many of the same mental processes at the beginning of the new school year as I did at the beginning of the new calendar year taking stock of where I was and where I wanted to be. I made new resolutions in August/September about what I wanted to accomplish with my students and how I was going to go about it, new resolutions about myself regarding time management and putting first things first, and new resolutions about changing the way I think and changing my attitudes in order to change the way I viewed the world. I m not starting a new school year anymore, but other things in my life that took a break during the summer are beginning again UMW monthly meetings, rehearsals for bell choir at my church, leading a music class for the youth who come to the Salvation Army, and taking recreational classes just because I want to learn something new. So, at this time of year, I again have a sense of taking stock, looking down the road to where I want to be, and of identifying and setting goals. For me, that is a good thing because I am definitely a work in progress. As we begin this second new year of 2018, the district UMW calendar has many opportunities scheduled for the fall. It is my prayer that all of you will look down the road and make it your goal to join us and be part of the UMW action as we strive to put first things first by being faithful servants of God Almighty. Don t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect. Romans 12:2 (NLT)

6 Secretary Sally Kohls Hello My Sisters in Christ! It s hard to believe Fall is upon us along with shorter days and cooler temperatures. Many UMW Units take a break over the summer, like mine does, with the first meetings beginning in September. Joshua 5:14 What message does my Lord have for his servant? Haggai 1:13 the Lord s messenger, gave this message of the Lord to the people. There are dozens of references in the Bible to messages being delivered to specific persons or to the people in general, so we know how important it is to communicate. How do you communicate information from your UMW meeting minutes to your congregation? It s important to share what our women are doing in the name of Jesus Christ so look for those opportunities. Consider providing a summary, written or verbal, at Church Council. If your church has a Facebook site post a few highlights there. A church website might offer a way to include a link to your UMW Unit meeting notes along with other updates. How about s that go out to the congregation could highlights be included? Do you have shut-ins that would enjoy reading about the ongoing UMW activities and events remember to send the minutes or a summary out to them. If you aren t tech savvy I m certain someone in your church is, so reach out and discuss how your written notes might reach a wider audience. I look forward to seeing everyone in the near future and remember to send me in those officer updates at anytime. Blessings Sally Kohls, Capital District Secretary (919) , secretary@capitalumw.com Communication communication@capitalumw.com Rosemary Keel A good newsletter depends on you. Your articles and pictures make the newsletter more enjoyable and informative. The Communication chairperson can also assist you with advertising your events. She maintains an mailing list that you can use to advertise bazaars, yard sales, suppers, studies, book clubs, etc. The newsletter is a place of sharing ideas that another unit may want to adopt. This is my last newsletter. I have enjoyed assembling the newsletter the last four years. I know my replacement will do a great job but she needs your input. She must receive changes to the officers and s as soon as possible in order to maintain an accurate list. Thank you for all you do. Rosemary Keel

7 Membership, Nurture, and Outreach Shirley Jones Greetings Capital District United Methodist Women Membership and Nurture Coordinator Greetings Local Units Membership Nurture and Outreach Coordinator Another fast year, as we begin the next four months this will be a busy time for many Local Units as they prepare for their annual fund raising projects, Bake Sales, Craft Fairs and others. Women are so generous helping others who cannot help themselves. As many of us grow older and we have worked diligently to help others, we need younger women to take up the torch to keep the momentum going. In the next few months, we will have ou UMW Annual meeting in Fayetteville, our District meeting location to be announced and LOTS (Local Officers Training Session). I hope to see many of you at all of these meetings. May God's Blessings be upon all of you as He will be with you giving you strength to keep our United Methodist Women organization strong. In His name, Shirley Jones, Capital District Membership Nurture and Outreach Coordinator Nomination Committee Georgia Pilkington This year ends my journey with the Capital District U.M.W. as chairperson of the Nominations Committee. It has been an informative, exciting and challenging opportunity. I cannot express enough the rewarding privilege to serve on this team of dedicated United Methodist Women. I ask you to consider serving as a District officer in Several positions are still open. The Nominations Committee will be diligently seeking women interested in missions for women, children, and youth. You only have to say YES. Please consider starting your journey serving as a U.M.W. District officer. Georgia Pilkington Nominations Committee Chairperson

8 Volume 7, Issue 4 NC Capital District UMW Newsletter September 1, 2018 Education and Interpretation Roxie Floyd Wow, we are the end of the long, hot summer and now looking forward to the beauty of the fall season. God has so ordained our lives to be lived through seasons. There is beauty in each season. What season are you experiencing? Are you searching for the meaning of life, are you exploring the ways of Christ, are you beginning a new life in Christ, are you growing your walk in Christ or are you maturing all of your life in Christ? I ask you this because as a disciple of Christ, I want you to live into the full awareness of how God loves you and honors you and wants the very best for your life. Our steps as Christians are ordered by God. Our living into what God has for us gives us hearts for people and allows us to serve God s people with generosity and hospitality. We allow the women, children, youth and families that we serve to witness the genuine Love of Christ in a real and tangible way when we model the life of Christ. We continue to offer Mission u studies that provide our members with opportunities for growth. We are still available to offer the Mission u studies this fall and want to encourage you to read the suggested books, attend the studies so that you might continue to mature in Christ and offer the love that you experience to those you serve. For additional information contact Roxie Floyd at eandi@capitalumw.com. Mission U These UMW members recently completed the mission study Embracing Wholeness at Mission U in Fayetteville.

9 Vice President Pat Thompson Amazing! Most of us cannot believe how fast 2018 is passing. We are currently having our last hurrah with summer as we begin to transition into fall. Changes are brought to mind as we move from summer freedom, fun and vacations into fall with bright colors, school, busy schedules, and football. However, God never changes, never leaves us and always loves us! So with these blessings we are called to GO wherever He may lead no matter the place or circumstance. As God s hands and feet please remember United Methodist Women s upcoming events this fall. Please pray for these events and the women who make them available for you. September events: Mother-Child Retreat and the Capital District 2019 Planning Retreat at Mt. Carmel. October events: NC Conference UMW Annual Meeting in Fayetteville and Capital District Annual Meeting at Brogden UMC near Goldsboro. November events: NC Conference UMW Do It Day for District Officers and Capital District LOTs (Local Officer Training) TBA. We do not have a location to host this event. Please notify me if your church is interested. These events are to keep YOU educated and informed about UMW missions, resources and money. But most of all they are about worship, fellowship, faith, hope and LOVE! I will be returning as Vice President, if approved, for 2019 and I am eager to help you in all the ways I am able, especially program planning. Please call, , or text me. Capital District UMW Vice President Pat S. Thompson (919) (919) Cell vicepresident@capitalumw.com

10 Treasurer Donna Hayes Greetings, Wow, it s almost fall y all! As we enter the season of cooler weather and harvest, let s focus on ending our financial year strong. As UMW members, we have multiple ways of giving to promote missions that support women, youth and children. Our third quarter reports are due, if you have not submitted them, please do so as soon as possible. Candle Burning is due this quarter in order to be recognized at our District Annual Meeting. You have a few days to submit those so that I can include the names in the Candle Burning booklet. Unfortunately, we have missed our Pledge goals for the past few years. We always get close, but have fallen short. Let s do all we can to dig deep and support our goal! Be creative and ask your church membership to help. We have had several units that honor or memorialize their parents on Mother s Day and Father s Day, also, graduates during graduation season. This type of thinking out of the box has increased their Candle Burning donations. Fall is a great season to showcase the World Thank Offering. Use a giving calendar to count your blessings. During October, make a calendar to share with your congregations. Some examples for daily giving may be: Give a nickel for every pair of shoes you own. Donate a quarter for each child or grandchild. Give a dime for each bathroom in your home. Donate a dollar for each car or TV, etc. As we concentrate on our blessings, some that we take for granted, let us give all we can to support of our UMW Mission. Feeling blessed every day, Donna Hayes, District Treasurer
