2 A VIEW FROM THE BALCONY With many of you I have watched the events from Ferguson, Missouri with a broken heart and a puzzled mind. Puzzled, because the more details that come out about the police shooting of the 18 year old man, the more unclear and conflicted the picture of what actually happened gets. Heartbroken, because a young man is dead, a police officer is being investigated, and a community is being ripped apart by forces bigger than this incident which has triggered so much protest and violence. I find myself turning to Jesus to get guidance in his life and ministry for how to think about these events and be faithful in responding to them. Out of those prayers and reflections I am thinking - I need to ask questions and listen before I decide anything: Jesus was always asking questions of people and situations before he decided anything and it is a way of approaching life he invites us to practice: Some questions of this situation include: What happened between the officer and that young man? What forces are at work that pushed this community over the edge? Is such violence and division possible in our community? - I need to see the world through other people s eyes: I have never been stopped and frisked. I have only been afraid on a street once or twice in my life. I have never faced grinding poverty with no way out. I have never had to make a life-ordeath decision in seconds. I am not the person who gets called when violence is breaking out. All of that tells me I have a lot of listening, thinking, and praying to do before I decide anything about other people s lives. - I begin to see the depths that Jesus has gone to in order to reach and heal us: What will make things right for the people of Ferguson? The young man s family? The office who killed the young man? The weight of all of that is more than I can bear and it makes me even more aware of how much Jesus took on for all of us on the cross whether our hands are bloody or we stand by shaking our heads he climbed the cross and took the weight for all of us. Because he did that, I will trust him to guide me, to guide all of us, in the next steps. The next steps in Ferguson, the next steps here in our communities, the next steps in our own hearts. 3 Disciple is an introduction to intentional Scripture reading in the company of a small group and the application of Scripture to everyday life. In Disciple Bible Study you will: - Read daily 3 to 4 chapters of the Bible. - Engage in weekly meetings on Sunday evening (6 7:30 p.m.) to discuss the Scriptures read and help each other with questions and application of the Bible passages. - Experience a group that practices intentional prayer and care for one another. - Become more grounded in your faith and more equipped to live faithfully in the every day world. There is a new Disciple Bible Study called: Disciple Express Disciple Express covers much of the Bible that the previous Disciple Bible Study, but in 24 weeks instead of 34 weeks. It will include revised participant and leader guides, along with revised video components for the weekly group meetings. Disciple Express will be divided into a 12 week segment for the Old Testament that will run from mid-september to early December and a 12 week segment for the New Testament that will run from January until April. 5 CALLING ALL MEN Mark your calendars and join us as our monthly Men s Breakfast resumes beginning Sunday, September 7 th. We gather in Fellowship Hall at 8:00 am for breakfast and a time of fellowship around the tables before church on the first Sunday of each month. We ll be finished by 9:00am, which allows plenty of time for those who are ushering or need to be ready for choir rehearsal before worship. Join us, and bring a friend! Make a joyful noise join a choir! New members are always welcome in our music program, and as practices are about to begin again for the coming year, now s a perfect time to join. Practice schedules for all choirs are currently being set for the coming year. The meeting is presided over by our District Superintendent, the Rev. Steve Bechtold and the evening will begin with Rev. Bechtold meeting with the Staff Parish Relations Committee at 6:30 p.m. in the Asbury Room. The Church Conference will follow at 7:30 in the sanctuary. All professing members of the church are invited and welcome and will have voice and vote at the meeting. 8 COMMUNITY SCREENING OF A PLACE AT THE TABLE Join us for a screening of the film, A Place at the Table, on Saturday, September 13 th at the Totowa United Methodist Church. The event will start at 4:30 pm, admission is free, light snacks will be provided, and any donations will benefit CUMAC. Following the film, we ll have a panel of experts engage the audience in a conversation about hunger issues and what we can do to make a difference. THE ACTION AGAINST HUNGER FOOD DRIVE The 2014 Action Against Hunger Food Drive will be held on Sunday, October 5 th. This annual food drive, sponsored by the North Jersey Media Group, is the largest one-day food drive in the metropolitan area. Help support the food drive by volunteering or by visiting your local supermarket and donating food between the hours of 11:00 am and 4:00 pm on October 5 th. Volunteers are needed to sort thousands of pounds of food for distribution to Passaic County's network of feeding programs. Your participation will ensure that critical food items get to agencies in time for the busy holiday rush. *Groups are welcomed and encouraged. *All youth under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. We will have large vehicles and heavy equipment running all day; for your safety please do not bring a child under 12 unless you can account for him/her through your entire stay.
