That is the challenge that was given to those mathematicians and engineers working to send a man to the moon in this week s Faithflix film Hidden Figures. Those who sent humans to space had to look beyond the math that they knew and the expectations that they had to dream for and work to reach what was thought to be impossible. This week I had the incredible privilege of working with a group of 52 middle-school age youth, 12 youth leaders, 11 volunteer leadership team members, and what seemed like an infinite supply of cooks (Thank you all!) serving through Ozark Mission Project here in Jonesboro. Thank YOU, CUMC, for all YOU did to serve in the kitchen, shower houses and elsewhere! 32 service

2 serve in the kitchen, shower houses and elsewhere! 32 service projects were completed for 16 neighbors, including six wheelchair ramps! I must say that as we began the week and faced its challenges, I was thinking it would be impossible to accomplish all that we had set our minds to. Yet, God gives us many people with various gifts and abilities to serve as the body of Christ for the kingdom of God. Projects were completed. Worship was incredible, and today all went home with an incredible spirit on fire (even if exhausted) for God. Sometimes God calls us to look beyond our expectations for what we can accomplish on our own, for what others can accomplish based on what we think of them, beyond our stereotypes, beyond our judgments. I hope you will join us tonight as we look beyond with Hidden Figures in the Cloud Room at 6pm (with a movie concession stand that includes chicken nachos!) and Sunday at 9 or 11 as we worship, sing, look beyond with Galatians 3:23-29 and gather around the communion table together as the body of Christ. 3 Upcoming Events VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED to build a wheelchair ramp! Next Thursday and Friday, July 5-6, we will build a wheelchair ramp at 715 West Matthews in Jonesboro between 8:00 am -12:00 pm. If you are able to help out, please contact the church office or Larry Featherston or Roger Lamkin. (Weather is supposed to be cooler those two days!!) Join us for our summer movie night THIS THURSDAY, July 5, at 6 p.m. for Smiling s My Favorite : A Lesson in Child-like Faith from Elf. Bring the whole family, a neighbor or two or a friend. EVERYONE IS INVITED! The movie will be shown in the Cloud Room. Concession Stand will be available. We will also have a special treat -- Christmas Sugar Cookies! CHRISTMAS CONTEST The best way to spread Christmas Cheer is singing loud for all to hear! The second best way is to get your Christmas outfit together for our viewing of Elf on July 5! We will have a contest for the person displaying the best Christmas spirit with a special prize for the winner.

4 More Information! You may have noticed a blue and white cardboard box with a slit in the top cover sitting in the back of the sanctuary marked Lions Recycle Glasses. This is a collection box for recycling used glasses prescription, reading, and sunglasses and is an ongoing joint project of the CUMC Outreach Committee and the Jonesboro University Heights Lions Club. Your old glasses can help someone see better, which sometimes is a life-changing thing. Most will be used by the students at the Southern College of Optometry in Memphis when they go on annual mission/internship trips in the Spring to various countries, mostly in Central and South America. Your glasses will be most appreciated! (Even broken glasses will be accepted.)

5 REPORT ON ANNUAL CONFERENCE BY RICHARD CARVELL At Annual Conference 2018, we worshipped. We prayed. We debated. We conferenced. We agreed on some things. We disagreed on others. We said goodbye to some 23 retirees with more than 670 years of service. And the Annual Conference ordained one deacon and seven elders. Members of the Annual Conference defeated one resolution and two petitions dealing with issues of human sexuality. The resolution which was defeated would have called for a straw poll at the five District Charge Conferences on the Council of Bishops three models to be voted on at the 2019 called General Conference. Although the Council of Bishops has provided a preliminary report on its recommendation (the One Church or model #2), a final report will not be released until mid-july. This resolution calling for the straw poll was defeated by a show of hands vote. One petition to the 2019 General Conference that would have affirmed the present UMC stance on homosexuality as contained in the Discipline was defeated. The announced vote was 72 Yes and 308 No. A second petition to the General Conference would have urged delegates to remove language from the Disciple with regard to homosexuality. This petition was defeated by a show of hands vote. The resolution to immediately end child/parent separation under the US government s zero tolerance policy toward immigrant families passed overwhelmingly by a show of hands. Another resolution approved by a show of hands vote asks the Arkansas Annual

6 Conference to reinstate its Committee on Native American Ministry effective immediately. The resolution asks that the committee be made up of a majority of Native Americans. And finally, a resolution that would have affirmed women as ordained elders and deacons, diaconal ministers and licensed local pastors in United Methodist ministry was debated vigorously after a number of women members of the clergy and other women left the floor of the Conference in protest. After debate, the proposal was referred to a group to be made up of those who proposed the resolution and Conference clergywomen. The vote to refer was 290 Yes and 216 No. The Denman Evangelical Award recipients were the Rev. Danita Waller-Paige (clergy) and David Leech (laity). The late Jim Argue was honored for his service as president of the United Methodist Foundation of Arkansas.
