1 To Know God, and to Make Him Known Our Confirmands! June / July, 2018 Adolfo Gonzalez Lizbeth Gonzalez Kaitlyn Rene Hansen Jackson David Heiniger Dilyn Wayen Jenkins Jasmine Aaliyah Wells Nasir Aquian Wells

2 Pastor s Musings Pastor George Loveland pastor@winsteadumc.org At Winstead, we are dusting off the gold shovel, expecting to break ground for the Church-Family Kitchen at the new church site sometime this summer. The Church-Family Kitchen will give us a family kitchen, meeting space, industrial level peanut-cooking facilities, and bathrooms accessible from outside. This will be a beautiful facility, with the building s exterior in the same design as phases 2 and 3 of the building project--the Family Life Center and Sanctuary. Since our three days of worship at the site during our tent revival, some of us have gone door-to-door meeting folks in the neighborhoods around the church, telling them about our church and our ministry, and inviting them to upcoming worship and fellowship events. We are dusting off the gold shovel.... We re planning Old Time Methodist Camp Meetings at the new site for July 1, August 5, and September 3. This will be our Sunday morning worship services for these dates. We ll begin at 10:30 with the regular monthly Sunday School Assembly, followed by singing and worship. We ll have potluck picnics after worship service. As you probably know, this is how our Methodist forbears did it. They first praised and worshipped God on the land, and then built the church in the space that God had hallowed. Isn t it great to be Methodists acting like Methodists! Let us give special thanks to all who have served on the Building Committee, given generously to the building fund, led and contributed to the capital campaign, cooked peanuts, barbecued chickens and kept the faith during this long process. And we owe a special thanks to Barry Parks, Chair of the Building Committee. Barry has persevered with a deep and abiding faith that God would lead us through this process, and has given of his time and talents to put a foundation under our dreams. And most of all, let us give thanks to our God, who has led us through times that felt like a wilderness, but always toward a promised land of a new and vibrant ministry. To God be the Glory! Wear Your Name Tag Please remember to wear your name tag each Sunday. Take yours from the table to the right of the Sanctuary doors and return it after the service so it is available next week. If you don t have a name tag, contact the office. Thanks! 2

3 Kids & Winstead Congratulations, Eagle Scout! On May 26 in Winstead United Methodist Church at the Eagle Scout Court of Honor, Nathan Dunham was pinned an Eagle Scout by his father, the Reverend Paul Dunham of Kenly United Methodist Church. Paul pinned his son with the eagle scout pin that Paul had received from his father who was an eagle scout! Let's just say the apple didn't fall far from the tree! Winstead United Methodist Church and Winstead ECHO youth group wish to congratulate Nathan on receiving the highest award given by Boy Scouts of America. Congratulations also go to his parents, Paul and Holly Dunham, and his sister, Bethany, as they were a big help and encouragement all the way through his journey. The picture shows Nathan and Paul standing by one of his Eagle projects at Seeds of Hope House Wilson. Marty Johnson Youth Director Congratulations, Confirmation Class of 2018 We want to say a very big congratulations to our 2018 confirmation class! On Pentecost Sunday we were blessed to receive seven young people who pledged to follow Christ and to serve him with all their heart and all their being! Thank you, Winstead United Methodist Church, for allowing us to go to Lake Junaluska, for your gifts so that we could pull together all the material for our classes, for those of you who came and shared. All of this work by Winstead United Methodist Church culminated in these young people being baptized, reaffirming their baptism, and confirming their faith in Jesus Christ! Please remember that you have committed to love them and nurture them in Christian love by your prayers, your presence, your service, your gifts, and your witness. Without each one of you showering them with your love and grace, leading them by your example and showing them the way with your presence and prayers in their life continually, these new creations in Christ will weather in the harshness of everyday life! I challenge you to take one or two of them under your wing, into your prayers, and allow God to use you as His hands and feet with words and hugs and encouragement to these new followers of Christ! Thank you again, because of you, Pentecost Sunday was a wonderful and blessed showing of The Power of the Holy Spirit! (See front page of this newsletter for pictures of each confirmand.) 6 Outreach News by MaryEllen Bass Strangers at Our Door Outreach Ministry: The Outreach Committee with Pastor George is putting together a list of resources in our community to help our church better help those who come to us seeking assistance with such things as food, housing, utility bills, and gas, to name a few. We are also holding a drive in the months of June and July for items that will be placed in Snack Blessing Bags along with resource information to give to the Strangers at our Door who come seeking assistance and needing a little bit of hope. We will collect the following items in June and July: granola bars, nabs, bottled water, and brown paper bags. Collection boxes will be placed in the Narthex for you to place your items. Thank you! Also, a very special thank you to Joyce Wolfe and the Grace Notes Handbell Choir for donating $504 from the offering received from the spring Handbell Concert to the Outreach Missional Ministry Fund to assist the Strangers at Our Door. Your donation is indeed a blessing and will help with such things as food, gas, utility bills, and other needs. Donations to the Strangers at Our Door Outreach Missional Ministry Fund are always welcomed and appreciated. 5 th Annual Summer Food Drive Outreach Ministry Winstead United Methodist, along with other Wilson churches, are participating in the Summer Food Drive again this summer that runs from Sunday, May 27 to Sunday, August 26. A box will be placed in the Narthex for you to place your food items. The food collected during the drive is to help feed the hungry in our community through Hope Station, Soup Kitchen, and St. Mark s Food Pantry. These are some of the resources to which our church will refer those Strangers at Our Door for assistance with food and a hot meal. A list of the needed food items is on the back cover of this newsletter. Those of you who raise gardens, you may also donate food from your garden. You may take your vegetables to the Hope Station, or contact MaryEllen or any Outreach Committee member to make arrangements to pick it up and take it for you. CHEW Winstead UMC donates $100 annually through the Outreach Committee to the CHEW program (Children s Hunger Elimination of Wilson) sponsored by First Presbyterian Church. Chew provides backpacks of food for identified school children to help ensure that they do not go hungry on weekends when they are not able to receive meals at school. Donations to the CHEW program are also welcomed and may be made to Winstead UMC marking the donation for the CHEW program. 6

The annual strawberry shortcake treat for the Vick staff was served on Friday, May 18, to celebrate all those who work diligently each school day to teach and serve the Vick students in so many ways. A special thank you goes to Deans Farm Market for their generous donation of strawberries to help with the celebration. We really appreciate our community businesses that contribute to our public schools. In addition to strawberry shortcake, we presented each staff member with a jar of Winstead peanuts, always a popular gift. Some of our members volunteered at the Book Fair at Vick and also served as proctors for EOG testing. We continue to pray for the success of the Vick students on the end-of-year testing, which will continue into June. Thanks for all who have helped with Hand in Hand activities during the school year. We hope our efforts have made a difference to the students and staff at Vick. The next Hand in Hand meeting will be on Tuesday, June 5, at 7:00 pm in the choir room. June / July,
