2 Hurricane Florence Response; Leadership Nominations; Stewardship Campaign We have all watched as the devastation unfolded in North and South Carolina over the past week. When homes get flooded, it is a massive effort to clean up. Everything that got wet has to go. The house has to be stripped of carpet and sheetrock, taking it back to the framing just above what the level of the water was. Then, the framing has to be treated for mold and pass mold tests. In some cases, the electrical wiring has to be redone on the affected level of the home. So, as you can see, this is a massive effort that takes many volunteer hours and takes some financial support. Here are some ways you can help now and in the weeks and months going forward. First, give to UMCOR. You can write a check to Holmes Street and put UMCOR in the memo line. Find out more about the UMCOR response here: One of the ways we can help as a congregation is to assemble cleaning kits. You can find information about these on the UMCOR website, and we will have information available in our lobby spaces this week. Your family or Sunday school or other group can assemble these and bring them to the church. We will get them to the warehouse in Decatur. You can also take a group to help out at the warehouse. Call or the church office to find out more. Finally, I am going to try to get a team together to travel to the affected area to help with the mucking out of houses. I m currently aiming towards October 8th-12th, which happens to coincide with Fall Break for most of our students and their families. Contact me if you are interested in going. Rev. Some people will remain in leadership as a part of the three year cycle of leadership we use. But there are many positions coming open. And, we are creating some new teams for ministry we will be engaging together in If you know of people who would be good leaders in the areas of missions, finances, personnel or facilities, please let me know. If you are interested in serving in leadership in some capacity, please let me know. We will soon kick off our Stewardship Campaign to give you an opportunity to prayerfully decide how you will support the work God has for us with your prayers, presence, giving, service and witness. Great things are happening here at Holmes Street, and greater things are yet to come. Let s keep our focus on loving God, loving one another, loving our neighbors, and loving others in an effort to grow God s Kingdom within us, in our community, and around the world. May we all do our part to grow as followers of Jesus Christ and as a family of faith as we Invite, Gather, Grow and Go! Todd

3 This coming Sunday - September 23 Gift Bibles to Third-Graders - All third grade students will receive a gift Bible from the church. Gift Bibles to Others - Any student (child or youth) who never received a Bible from Holmes Street or another church they were in will also be awarded a gift Bible from the church BRING YOUR BIBLE! You are encouraged to bring your own Bible to church that day. Especially you are encouraged to bring the Bible that you received as a gift from your home church when you were a child or youth! Many of us still have those special Bibles, so let's bring them to church on the 23rd. Let's celebrate God's Word together this Sunday (both worship services).

All are invited to join us for this journey through the book of Titus!

7 Ask about some the life-changing ministries with which Holmes Street is involved : Dinner Church, Celebrate Recovery, Searcy Homes and the Limestone Correctional Facility Prison Ministry We currently have a ministry associated with Searcy Homes close to our church. We have families who have participated in VBS, worship, ZONE, and recently we have collected school supplies to help meet the needs of children there. As school is now underway, there is a need for tutors to help children in the after-school program at Searcy Homes. If you have an interest in helping, please call the church office for more information ( ). Sundays at 5:30 pm Thursdays at 6:00 pm Kairos #66 You are invited to participate as an outside member of Kairos #66, which will be held at Limestone Correctional Facility from October 11-14, You can participate in the following ways: by praying (specially signing up for the prayer vigil) by baking and packaging cookies to specific guidelines by purchasing $5.00 meal tickets Scripture speaks of how we are to share our brotherly love with those who are in prison. Only those meeting specific prison training requirements can go into the prison, however, all Christians can be with us in Spirit while we are in the facility. So, please join as a member of Kairos #66. Prayer vigil sign-up sheets, cookie instructions and meal tickets will be made available to all who want to help. Bill Glover

8 Grilled hamburgers and all the trimmings will be served. There will be no charge for the meal this time. Instead, we will be asking for a donation for the United Methodist Children s Home. Rev. Diane Wood will be presenting the program. She is a board certified chaplain and completed the Academy for Spiritual formation in Having worked in health care for her entire career, she is passionate about the topic of advance directives. Please call the church for reservations if Hilna does not reach you. Autumn Senior Trip Let s head for the hills as the trees begin to reveal their brilliant colors! We ll enjoy a delicious meal at the famous Wildflower Cafe and visit the Orbix Hot Glass studios. The church van will be leaving on October 11 to tour the area around Ft. Payne and Mentone. There s limited seating, so reserve your seat quickly The cost is $55.00 which includes your meal, tips, entrance to Orbix, a tour guide, and transportation. Penny Wars between SEC Football Teams The UMW is again sponsoring Penny Wars to support both the Church Building Fund and UMW Projects. Each Sunday, money jars will be placed in the lobby of the Wesley Center and the Narthex of the Sanctuary to collect donations. Vote for your favorite team by placing checks, cash, or even your pennies in the designated jar. The team that has the most donations will be revealed at a later date.

14 Halloween Family Fun Night On October 31 our church is sponsoring one of the biggest outreach events of the year! Each year this event has grown and last year we had hundreds from our surrounding community enter the doors of our church (many for the first time!) We hope that you will participate and put October 31 on your calendar. Bring your kids, grandkids, and neighbors. This is a great time to INVITE everyone you know for a fun activity and a safe alternative for children on Halloween night. We offer lots of games, prizes, food and a ton of fun! We need MANY volunteers to make this event happen. How can you help? We need folks to help us set up the games Volunteers to give an hour or so to run each of the games throughout the night. We need about 20 crockpots of chili Donated packs of hot dogs and buns Donated chips Donated soft drinks Donated Halloween candy Please call the church office if you are willing to help in any way! 17 Hey y all! I hope everyone s week is off to a great start! In Sunday School this past weekend, we took a look at 2 nd Timothy and how it shows Paul s encouraging last words to Timothy. Then at UMYF, Breanna, Ryan, Saydi, and Bryan were champs serving on the Salvation Army Soup Van! We re still on our regular schedule this week, with our Wednesday night Bible Study from 6:00-7:30, Sunday School at 10:00 on Sunday morning, and UMYF from 5:00-7:00 Sunday night.
