2 MOSAIC NEWS If you missed the MOSIAC Sweetheart Dinner on February 10, you missed a real treat. Participants were invited in to the dining area by Garber youth dressed in black and white with red aprons. They were served beverages and dinner while getting to know the youth server. Carol Hill delivered a wonderful devotional and introduced Drew Demarest, our youth minister who spoke to the group. He then introduced one of the youth, Emily Cuttic, who gave her testimony about going on Garber mission trips. A LOVE Offering was taken up to help defray the costs of the students participating for 2017 Youth retreats and mission trips. After a delicious meal, participants enjoyed entertainment by the Southern Gentlemen quartet, a Lollypop skit performed by our own Dan and Cammie Armstrong, and were presented flowers for the special occasion. Door prizes were also distributed. What a great event! Join us for our next MOSIAC event, a day trip to Greenville on Friday, March 24. We will travel by Garber bus/ new van to tour Cypress Glenn Methodist Retirement Home, have lunch at Basil s Restaurant, then visit the Farmer s Market and the Eastern Carolina Village and Farm Museum. Cost will be $4.00 for Village tour, transportation $2.00. TOTAL $6.00 and lunch on your own. Reserve your spot: contact Sue Webb at or swebb@garberumc.com Calling women who need to be encouraged to remain faithful to the truth! What Love Is..... Presented by Kelly Minter Tuesdays beginning March 14 8:30 a.m. in Room 311 of the Ministry Center Join Tina Hoard and Nell Todd as they facilitate this 6 week study that focuses on the letters of 1, 2, & 3 John which were written to encourage followers of Jesus to remain faithful to the truth. Believers are challenged to look at contrasting themes such as walking in the light instead of darkness, truth versus lies and deception, loving God more than loving the world, and the meaning of true fellowship and community rather than shallowness. This study reveals not only the heart of John but also the heart of Jesus. Please call the church office to sign up!
3 During Holy Week this year, the Garber Worship Ministries are presenting a dramatic presentation of the events of the week leading up to the crucifixion. Musically, visually, and theatrically stunning, you will not want to miss this powerful telling of the love of Christ as we worship together on Maundy Thursday (April 13) and Good Friday (April 14) at 7:00pm in Morris Hall. Please come join us as we reflect upon the magnitude of what God has done for us in Christ Jesus. Garber s Chancel Choir, along with choirs from Centenary UMC and other local congregations are excited to announce a presentation of the dramatic oratorio, ELIJAH, by Felix Mendelssohn! This is a powerful and beautiful work that has not been heard in New Bern in many years! The choirs, along with orchestra and soloists, will present the work May 19 th at 7pm at Garber and May 21 st at 4pm at Centenary UMC. If you are interested in joining us in singing, please contact Matt Johnson at mjohnson@garberumc.com Also, we are looking for any individual or corporate sponsors who might be interested and willing to sponsor these presentations. If you or your business are interested, please contact Matt Johnson at mjohnson@garberumc.com.
4 Safe Sanctuary Training: will be offered on Monday, March 13 at 7:00 pm and Thursday, March 23 at 1:00 pm (please choose one class offering) Please call the church office to sign up if you would like to participate in the class so we are sure to have enough seating and handouts. Our 18 Kingswood Kids are enjoying some normal days in Kingswood, which includes a healthy snack, an active playtime, Bible stories and Bravos and an hour of homework each day with our favorite volunteers! In February, we also enjoyed making some Valentine Treats for the shut-ins that Sue Web visits every week. As usual, we are beyond thankful for Garber Church and all you do to make our program a fun and safe place to be for the Kids God has placed in our care! Ruth Powers, Kingswood Director
5 The Garber Mission Committee Wants You to Know more about the missions we support! The committee works long and hard each year to research and filter the mission projects we support and to provide excellent opportunities for our church to be in mission to the community and the world. In an effort to keep the congregation informed, here is the second in a series of articles on the missions Garber supports. Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Campaign Operation Christmas Child Shoebox Campaign is a division of Samaritan s Purse, Inc. The Samaritan s Purse mission is to follow Christ s command by going to the aid of the world s poor, sick, and suffering. They are an effective means of reaching hurting people in countries around the world with food, medicine, and other assistance in the Name of Jesus Christ. This, in turn, earns them a sharing of the Gospel, the Good News of eternal life through Jesus. The OCC Shoebox Campaign enlists churches, organizations, and individuals to help pack shoe boxes with toys, socks, hygiene items, school supplies. These boxes are shipped all over the world to children in devastating conditions and given with love, as well as a Gospel in their native language. The children are also invited to attend a 12 week course, The Greatest Adventure, in which they learn about the Bible from Creation to the Resurrection. Upon completion, each child wears a cap and gown to graduate and are presented with their own bible. It is a special day in their life! Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Campaign is a year-round opportunity for service. Many people collect one item per month for their shoe boxes. Some buy their shipping labels one per month, or save their quarters all year to pay for shipping the number of boxes they determine to do. If you catch this fever, look for end of season buys on special items! And don t forget to put a WOW item in each box you pack! Operation Christmas Child Shoe Box Campaign is a yearly focus for Garber UMC. In 2016, Garber packed 1127 shoe boxes! In 2016 Garber also became a Relay Center for collection of shoe boxes in Craven County; we plan to again serve as a Relay Center in As such, over 8000 shoe boxes were collected here in Morris Hall, packed into cartons, and transported to the Eastern Collection Center for further transport to the Charlotte Processing Center. Look for information about the 2017 Shoe Box Campaign in the monthly church newsletters, as well as on bulletin boards and displays around the Garber Campus. Pre-printed shoe boxes are available at any point by asking in the church office get your boxes today and begin filling them a little at a time all year! The Garber Mission Committee and the Shoe Box Team thank you for your continued support and passion for this project! We are excited to see how God will work thru Garber Church this year in our shoe box efforts! Shoe Box Item of the Month: Hair Accessories (brush/comb, headbands, bows) Or puzzles (must fit in shoebox) Please note: new rules this year no candy or toothpaste. Matthew s Minute Connection Coffee If you are new to Garber, you are invited to a Connection Coffee Sunday, March 19 at 9:30am in Room 123 of the Ministry Center.
