November 20th: 1 Hour, 42 Minutes ROMERO In El Salvador, the new bishop speaks out against the death squads and the terror campaign the government is using in an attempt to crush the guerilla war that is being waged against them. This is seen as disloyalty and the number of priests attacked goes up and even churches are shut down by the government. Based on a true story, Romero was assassinated in March, November 27th: 1 Hour, 42 Minutes BABETTE S FEAST (1987) In a remote 19th-century Danish village, two sisters lead a rigid life centered around their father, the local minister, and their church. Both had opportunities to leave the village. Their father objected, and they spent their lives caring for him. Sometime after their father dies, the sisters decide to hold a dinner to commemorate the 100th anniversary of his birth. Babette takes charge of preparing the meal. December 4th: 1 Hour, 41 Minutes THE NATIVITY STORY (2006) Dramatization of the New Testament birth narratives from the Annunciation to the birth of Jesus, focusing on the relationship between Mary and Joseph and their arduous trek from Nazareth to Bethlehem, with subplots tracking the journey of the three Magi and the efforts of King Herod to prevent the prophecy of a messiah from coming to pass. It is a composite of the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. Mike Rich's screenplay manages to flesh out Mary and Joseph while remaining faithful to Scripture, poignantly suggesting the humanity beneath the halos. December 11th: 1 Hour, 12 Minutes THE FOURTH WISE MAN (1985) Adaptation of Henry Van Dyke's vintage short story "The Other Wise Man," tells of a fourth Magi (Martin Sheen) who is delayed in following the star to Bethlehem, then finally catches up with it in Jerusalem some 33 years later in an encounter which fulfills his life's search for truth. Produced by Paulist Father Ellwood Keiser and directed by Michael Rhodes, the 72-minute dramatization effectively amplifies the religious dimension of the original while adding some light humor from Alan Arkin as the Magi's servant. Family entertainment with the universal theme of bettering oneself by helping others.

This moment is often referred to as the Day of the Lord. At that time God appears in power and majesty, completing the mission of Jesus Christ with justice and righteousness. Descriptions of this time appear in several places in Scripture, including today s passage from Malachi. It is important to note that such depictions use metaphorical language; they are not literal scenarios. Malachi uses the image of a blazing fire, an image often used as a sign of God s intervention in human affairs; for example, the pillar of fire that led the Israelites to freedom. In the Gospel, Jesus speaks of the destruction of the Temple a magnificent structure revered by the Jewish people. The Temple was actually destroyed by the Romans some decades later, and it is unlikely that Jesus was predicting such an event. Jesus then speaks about the signs that will precede the endtime. Again, many of these events came about in later years; we experience some of them in our own time. But Jesus cautions that these cosmic events must be understood carefully; they are not to be seen as literal indications of the Day of the Lord. In the midst of both descriptions there is a strong element of hope and redemption. Malachi proclaims that the sun of justice will arise for those who fear (are in awe of) the name of the Lord. And Jesus promises those who are persecuted that not a hair on your head will be destroyed. Paul s instruction to the early Church is also encouraging. He offers his own example of ministry as a model for others, asking them (and us) to live in harmony and never to be a burden on others or be distracted by other people s affairs. His message is simple: stay focused on the work of the Lord. What similarities and differences do you find in the First Reading and the Gospel? What does the Second Reading tell you about problems the community was facing? Are these readings about the end-time encouraging or frightening to you?
