Sunday, July 30, 2017 Time after Pentecost Worship at 9:30 AM GATHERING Hymn Sing Confession and Forgiveness All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the beginning before time, before people, before the world began, God was. Here among us, beside us, calling us to bring about the kingdom of heaven, God is. In the future, when we have turned to dust and all we know is at peace, God will be. Loving and redeeming the world, through Jesus Christ, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, God was, God is, God will be. Merciful God, we are sorry for the times we have failed to care for people. For the times we have let the hungry go hungry, the poor stay poor, and the lonely who we refused to talk to. Forgive us God. 1
Holy Spirit, we are sorry for the times that we have not said yes to your call. We are sorry for the times we have failed to be the church, to be God s people gathered together in worship and service. Forgive us God. Jesus, our Lord and Savior, we are sorry for the times we have doubted your presence. We have seen you this week in the many faces that we have met, but we still find it easy to forget. Forgive us God. Out of love for each one of us, God hears our prayers and forgives our sin. Be renewed in this gift of forgiveness, in the freedom to live as God has created and called you to live. All thanks be to God. Amen. Gathering Song Gather Us In Hymnal #532 1 Here in this place the new light is streaming, now is the darkness vanished away; see in this space our fears and our dreamings brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in, the lost and forsaken, gather us in, the blind and the lame; call to us now, and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name. 2 We are the young, our lives are a myst'ry, we are the old who yearn for your face; we have been sung throughout all of hist'ry, called to be light to the whole human race. Gather us in, the rich and the haughty, gather us in, the proud and the strong; give us a heart, so meek and so lowly, give us the courage to enter the song. 3 Here we will take the wine and the water, here we will take the bread of new birth, here you shall call your sons and your daughters, call us anew to be salt for the earth. Give us to drink the wine of compassion, give us to eat the bread that is you; nourish us well, and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true. 2
4 Not in the dark of buildings confining, not in some heaven, light years away but here in this place the new light is shining, now is the kingdom, and now is the day. Gather us in and hold us forever, gather us in and make us your own; gather us in, all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bone. Text: Marty Haugen, b Text 1982 GIA Publications, Inc. Prayer of the Day Beloved and sovereign God, through the death and resurrection of your Son you bring us into your kingdom of justice and mercy. By your Spirit, give us your wisdom, that we may treasure the life that comes from Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. Welcome and Announcements WORD Scripture Reading Isaiah 43:1-4a Bible, pg. 585 But now thus says the Lord, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. 3
2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. I give Egypt as your ransom, Ethiopia and Seba in exchange for you. 4 Because you are precious in my sight, and honoured, and I love you Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God Children s Message Please stand, as you are able Gospel Acclamation Alleluia Hymnal #170 Alleluia. Many will come from east and west* and will eat in the king- dom of heaven. Alleluia. (Matt. 8:11) Holy Gospel Luke 10:1-11 Bible, pg. 844 The Holy Gospel, according to Luke, the 10 th chapter: Glory to you, O Lord Later the Lord chose seventy-two other followers and sent them out two by two to every town and village where he was about to go. 2 He said to them: A large crop is in the fields, but there are only a few workers. Ask the Lord in charge of the harvest to send out workers to bring it in. 3 Now go, but remember, I am sending you like lambs into a pack of wolves. 4 Don t take along a moneybag or a traveling bag or sandals. And don t waste time greeting people on the road. 5 As soon as you enter a home, say, God bless this home with peace. 6 If the people living there are 4
peace-loving, your prayer for peace will bless them. But if they are not peace-loving, your prayer will return to you. 7 Stay with the same family, eating and drinking whatever they give you, because workers are worth what they earn. Don t move around from house to house. 8 If the people of a town welcome you, eat whatever they offer. 9 Heal their sick and say, God s kingdom will soon be here! 10 But if the people of a town refuse to welcome you, go out into the street and say, 11 We are shaking the dust from our feet as a warning to you. And you can be sure that God s kingdom will soon be here! The Gospel of our Lord: Message Praise to you, O Christ The assembly stands to proclaim the word of God in song Hymn of the Day God Has Work for Us to Do Til all the jails are empty and all the bellies filled; til no one hurts or steals or lies, and no more blood is spilled; God has work for us to do, God has work for us to do, til God s will is done, and all things are made new, God has work for us, work for us to do! Til age and race and gender no longer separate; til pulpit, press, and politics are free of greed and hate: God has work for us to do, God has work for us to do, til God s will is done, and all things are made new, God has work for us, work for us to do! By praying through our doing, and singing though we fear, By trusting that the seed we sow will bring God s harvest near: God has work for us to do, God has work for us to do, til God s will is done, and all things are made new, God has work for us, work for us to do! I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Other verses: that you are called that I am called Jonathan Rundman 2015 Reproduced with Permission CCLI # Offering Prayer Merciful God, you open wide your hand and satisfy the need of every living thing. You have set this feast before us. Open our hands to receive it. Open our hearts to embrace it. Open our lives to live it. We pray this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Words of Institution In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Lord s Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. 7
Come, let us eat, for now the feast is spread. Our Lord s body let us take together. Music during Communion Lamb of God Hymnal pg. 154 Anthem Arioso J.S. All the blind will see, the lame will all run free, and all will know my name." Refrain 4 "I am the Word that leads all to freedom, I am the peace the world cannot give. Prayer after Communion Jesus Christ, host of this meal, you have given us not only this bread and cup, but your very self, that we may feast on your great love. Filled again by these signs of your grace, may we hunger for your reign of justice, may we thirst for your way of peace, for you are Lord forevermore. Amen. SENDING 10
Benediction The Spirit of God is upon you and has anointed you. You are the salt of the earth and you bring light to the world. You are not too young or too old, you are not too rich or too needy to bring good news to the impoverished, to give a hand to the broken-hearted, and to live out freedom and pardon through the gifts each one of you has been given. So remember to pack peace in your toolbox, hope in your backpack, love in your lunch bag, and may integrity, honesty, and joy be written on your heart and evident for all to see. Do not be frightened, for you are never alone. The God in whose image you are made will walk with you and guide you today, tomorrow, and every day. Amen. Sending Song Make a Difference You gave your life to make a difference, You gave your life to make a change. You welcomed all to your table, You re calling us to do the same. 1. Working side by side, no out or inside, Together we can make that change. With a few or many, with a lot or not any, 11
Together we can make that change. 2. Crossing the great divide, joy and peace will abide, Together we can make that change. Jesus is our peace, all fighting will cease, Together we can make that change. 3. We re the citizens with the saints, we re the sunshine with the rain, We re the joy with the pain, we re the change. You healed the sick and fed the poor, Loved the prophet and the whore, Through us You will do more, You re the change. 12
