We hope this resource will help you contribute to the church s ongoing mission of proclaiming the gospel to the world and growing ever more deeply in our love for the Lord. 12/2 SUN: 9:45 AM First Sunday of Advent Sunday Coffee and Donuts after Masses RCIA - Library 12/3 MON: 9:30 AM Eucharistic Adoration 12/4 TUES: 6:00 PM Building & Grounds Mtg. - Lison Rm. 12/5 WED: 4:00 PM 6:30 PM 12/6 THURS: 5:30 PM 6:00 PM 7:00 PM Please keep the family of Barbara Reignier in your prayers. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION This year this Holy Day falls on Saturday, December 8and is a Holy Day of Obligation which will be celebrated with a 9:00 AM Mass on Saturday [there will not be a Mass of Anticipation (Friday)]. Liturgical Ministers are needed to help prepare for this celebration. Sign-ups are in the Sacristy and Usher s Room. The Church s celebration of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (December 8) a patronal feast day for the United States. We remember that Mary, full of grace through God, was redeemed from the moment of her conception and that the Father blessed Mary more than any other created person in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places and chose her in Christ before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless before him in love (CCC ). This year is unique as December 8 falls on a Saturday. In order to celebrate this important feast day of the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as continue on our 4-week Advent journey as a Church, marked by four unique Sundays, we as Catholics participate in two Masses this weekend: one for Immaculate Conception (Saturday, December 8) and our usual Sunday Masses (Saturday 5:00 PM; Sunday 8:30 & 10:15 AM). Both of these Masses draw us closer as disciples to the essentials of our Faith during the course of our Church year and therefore to Jesus Christ and His Mother, Mary. This is a special opportunity for us to spend just one more hour in prayer together at the Holy Mass during the special (and brief) Season of Advent, to quiet our hearts from the hurry of holiday preparations, and remember the true spirit of the season which focuses on prayer, family, and the community of disciples to which we belong in Christ. SUNDAY COFFEE & DONUTS Please join us Sunday for Donuts, Coffee & Hospitality in Bona Hall after the Masses. See you there! 3 WORSHIP NEWS Contact: Wayne Efferson, Worship Leader x206 or THE ADVENT WREATH Xavier Seubert, OFM, wrote: The wreath is a cosmic symbol. It underlies how the universe is woven through human activity into the meaning of Christ. Branches from the forests, fed all year by earth, water, sun and air are woven together. Added to the branches are candles shaped from the wax of bees into the bearers of flame, which is so important for our survival and delight. All these are woven together into the final light and meaning of this the feast of Christmas, that is, into the heart of life s light born among us. The wreath symbolizes for Christian communities the world s movement into the life of Christ. This year s Advent Wreath will be located on the lower left steps of the sanctuary. The four Advent Candles are created from four previous year s Paschal (Easter) Candles (3 x 15 - used for the core candle) and wrapped with the appropriate amount of 100% Bees Wax Sheets to get each to the size of 4 x 15. Also, a special thanks goes to the volunteers who helped on November 26 to create our church environment to reflect this special season of Advent, in preparation of The Nativity of Our Lord (Christmas), our parish s feast day. LITURGICAL MINISTERS FOR CHRISTMAS MASS Sign-up sheets are in the Ushers Room and Front Sacristy for the following Masses: Christmas Eve: 4:00 & 7:00 PM; Christmas Day: 8:30 & 10:15 AM. CHRISTMAS FLOWERS The Worship Ministry will continue the tradition of honoring our deceased through the living symbol of fresh flowers (poinsettias). Your donation will help beautify our environment throughout the Christmas Season. Envelopes are provided in your monthly packet. Any amount is welcome, suggested amounts range from $10.00 to $ A special insert listing the names of those remembered will be included in the December 23 (Christmas) bulletin. Deadline for the flower listing is Monday, December 10. Besides our regularly scheduled confessions on Saturdays (4:00 PM), we offer one additional date: Tuesday, December 11 (6:30 PM). Priests from neighboring parishes will help the children, youth and the faithful of Nativity Parish celebrate this Sacrament. The children and youth will follow Examination of Conscience that is provided to them. The adults are provided with copies of an Examination of Conscience booklet, Preparing for Confession, to help them reflect on the Sacrament. You are kindly requested to return the booklets after use. We will be using the Second Rite of Penance, which means that there will be a short Penitential Service to help you to meaningfully celebrate the Sacrament. (Text of the service will be available). The service will involve a scripture reading followed by a homily and individual confessions. The prophet Isaiah foretold the coming of Jesus, the Messiah, But a shoot shall bud from the stump of Jesse, and from his roots a bud shall blossom. Jesse was the father of the great King David of the Old Testament and is often looked upon as the first person in the genealogy of Jesus. That is why again this year, the Worship Ministry chose to display this image in the center of the Gathering Space. PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS The Worship Ministry is preparing for Christmas decorations and needs your assistance. Christmas Decorations are set for Sunday, December 16 at 12:00 PM. If you can t help on this day then how about Monday Wednesday, during the day? Our biggest need is putting the lights on the large and small trees...can you help? Contact Wayne Efferson, Worship Leader, if you have questions ( ext. 206) or natwe@nativityparish.com LECTOR WORKBOOKS The Church begins its 2019 liturgical year on the First Sunday of Advent, December 2. The new liturgical year marks the transition from one lectionary cycle (A, B, or C) to the next, readings built around the three synoptic gospels - Matthew, Mark, and Luke; this year s gospel is from St. Luke (Cycle C). Lectors, if you did not pick up a workbook at the Liturgical Ministers Day of Renewal (In-service) on November 3 or 5 then you can do so from the rear Sacristy. Lectors, check your name off the list when you pick up your book.

6 Scrip Presentation December 1 & 2 I would like to tell you a possible story of a week in the life of a Scrip user, Suzy Sunshine. Suzy wakes up Sunday morning and starts getting ready for Mass, as she is doing that she puts together her Scrip order. When she leaves Mass she stops in the Gathering Space and picks up her Scrip. She gets in the car and her husband says, let s go out to breakfast. So they stop at Denny s and pay with a Scrip card and earned 7% of their bill for our parish. On Monday, her washing machine decided to stop working, so after shopping around they decided the best bargain was at Best Buy, so they went to the Parish Office and purchased Scrip cards and earned 4% for our parish. On Tuesday, she decided to do the family s grocery shopping for the week. She used her Festival Food Scrip cards and earned 3% for our parish. On Wednesday, she realized she was low on gas, so she stopped at her local Shell gas station, paid with a Scrip card and earned 10% for our parish. On Thursday, her husband came home from work and said you shouldn t have to cook tonight, let s go out to eat. They decided to go to Longhorn Steak House and since she did not have a Scrip card, she got out her phone and bought an e-card, so they could earn 8% for our parish. On Friday, she was taking their children to school and decided to stop at Starbucks for a cup of coffee and earned 7% for our parish. Saturday is errand day, so she stopped at Seroogy s to get some candy to give her Mom for her birthday and earned 11% for our parish, then she stopped at Cabela s to get a just because present for her husband and earned 11% for our parish. Their daughter wanted a new dress for Christmas so they went to Kohl s and earned 4% for our parish. After all the errands they needed a treat so they stopped at Smart Cow for ice cream and earned 5% for our parish. Of course, Saturday night their daughter wants to go to a movie with her friends, so she takes out a Marcus Scrip card for her to use and earns 9% for our parish. As you can see she used a lot of Scrip this week! And for all things she would have bought anyway with cash or credit card. Instead, by using $25.00 Scrip cards at each place she visited she would have earned $19.75 for Nativity Parish. If you used Scrip cards every other week for these regular purchases that would amount to over $500 a year for our parish. To take this one step further, if just 100 of our families did this we would have an additional $50,000 a year to support Nativity Parish. Why not start today?! Please take a couple of minutes to stop in the Gathering Space after Mass to purchase your Scrip cards. We also have people available this weekend to help you sign up for the ShopWithScrip website so you can shop right from your phone. Or stop in the Parish Office during the week. Thank you for your kind attention.
