2 Saint Matthew Sunday Nursery Did you know that while you are at church your child (age 1 through 4) can be socializing; praying and having fun with children his/her own age. Our nursery is open for Sunday School Parents at 9am to be able to join Richard for the parent class and at 10am for Mass. We ask that you arrive at least 10 minutes before Mass begins to preregister for our new check in system. Questions? Ever since the Second Vatican Council, when we started saying Mass in our native tongues, we have been more able to fully, consciously, and actively participate in the Mass. This is one factor in the decline of what we call devotional celebrations such as May crownings, Corpus Christi processions and the like. When Mass was said in Latin, people did not always feel truly involved in their faith through the Mass, so these non-liturgical, devotional celebrations flourished, with each community creating their own traditions. Although many of these traditional devotions have fallen out of favor in some places, some still continue to be celebrated. Even more importantly, some of these devotions are still useful tools for strengthening our faith and evangelizing our communities. The Corpus Christi Procession On the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, or Corpus Christi, the tradition of processing with the Blessed Sacrament continues as a beautiful devotion to the Paschal Sacrifice. It is the one time of the year we are able to joyfully process with the Body of Christ openly exposed, and to share His presence with the secular community. Our procession this year will take place on Sunday, June 3 rd after the 10:30 AM Mass. Weather permitting, we will process around the perimeter of our campus, along Overlook Drive, stopping at altar stations along the way. We are looking for volunteers from the various ministries, communities, and families to sponsor and decorate the altars. To sign up and learn more about how to decorate an altar, stop by the Narthex desk after Mass. Each group or family that signs up will be assigned a station and given a sheet with specific details. Children who are receiving their First Holy Communion that weekend are invited with their families to be an important part of our procession! Year of the Eucharist Bread from heaven! This year, we will add a new dimension of mission to our celebration. Since Christ laid down his life to become our bread from heaven, this year we are asking everyone involved to bring loaves of fresh bread. We will carry these loaves in procession and use them to decorate the altar stations. At the end of the procession, all the bread will be collected and donated to feed the hungry of our community. The Feast of Saint Matthew The feast of a Parishes patron saint is such an important day, that when it falls on the weekend, it becomes a solemnity in that parish! This year, to celebrate our patronal feast day, we will be making a pilgrimage to the Diocesan Cathedral of Saint James in Orlando. After Morning Mass on Friday, September 21, (save the date!) we will travel by bus to the cathedral, where we will be able to go to confession and attend midday Mass. Lunch will be provided at the Cathedral, and then we will have the opportunity to tour both the cathedral and the chancery our diocesan headquarters if you will. There will be a fee of $20.00 per person to cover the cost of the bus and lunch. Watch for further information on when and how to sign up for this special trip. THE GOLDEN LADIES SINGLE WOMEN 60 PLUS Have you ever been lonely and wish there was someone to talk to besides your dog or cat? Maybe you just wanted to go to the movies or get a cup of coffee but really did not want to go by yourself. This may be the group for you. We meet the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 in the Parish Center, Cenacle. Add your photo to our Online Church Directory. 4 Feed the Hungry Every Sunday from 12:30 2:00 p.m. different teams of parishioners gather together at the Disciples Corner, 197 W. Central Ave. in the parking lot of our Thrift/Gift Shop and pass out bags of food to those who are in need of something to eat. The 5 th Sunday of the month a hot meal is served. If you would like to join any of these teams on a particular weekend your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Once we achieve our goal, the majority of the additional funds will be returned to our parish to support our own special needs. One of the needs is that of new projectors in the church and improvement in our sound system that we will be able to use 1/3 of the additional funds for. 1/3 of the additional funds will be placed into an endowment fund held by The Catholic Foundation of Central Florida for the exclusive long-term use of our parish. 1/3 will be contributed to an endowment fund to support retired priests in our diocese. 7 St. Matthew Columbarium JUNE 9-13, 2018 A conference focused on how to be and make disciples in our day to day lives, centered on the scriptures found in The Gospel of St. Matthew Deacon Harold will preach at all the Masses and speak Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. THE BATTLE PLAN FOR PURITY Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. May 10 - July 12 The Conquer Series is a cinematic group study which every man should attend. Chains are being broken. Marriages are being restored. For the first time in history, a cinematic teaching series is here to offer men proven principles and practical tools to be a warrior and walk with sexual integrity. The Conquer Series men s small groups are designed to be a safe environment for men to receive sexual discipleship. With 68% of men in the church viewing porn on a regular basis, this is a course that every man should attend so you are equipped with the tools you need to help other men in this fight. This is a place where men can contend together, find support and acceptance. A typical Conquer Group is made up of 5 to 6 men, including the group leader. The setting is casual. You will watch one DVD per week, discuss topics presented in the DVD, and be given a weekly mission to apply the lessons you ve learned from the Conquer Series. You will also receive a study guide which includes the tools that a man needs to finish strong. 8 Can I Say a Prayer with You? If you are in need of prayer our Prayer Ministers are available after all of our weekend Masses by the Holy Family Statue. We ask that you wait until the conclusion of the recessional Hymn before joining them by the Holy Family Statue. Again, I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything for which they are to pray, it shall be granted to them by my heavenly Father. For where two or three gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matthew 18:19-20 ATTENTION ALL TEENS! This Summer, (July 27-29) Saint Matthew s going to Steubenville Youth Conference in Orlando! We are inviting everyone who is in 8 th grade 12 th grade to join us for this life changing retreat! You do not have to be in our Faith Formation program to come along. The price of the trip will be $375 per student, but we are offering scholarships for those who may need financial assistance! Steubenville Youth Conference Sponsors We are looking for sponsors for our Teens Summer Retreat! We are planning on attending Steubenville Youth Conference in Orlando. All are welcome to volunteer, but you must get fingerprinted through the diocese of Orlando and go through the Safe Environment Training if you have not done so already. Altaration We thank all the teens who took part in Altaration! Altaration is a program that teaches the beauty and mystery of the Mass! This was a great follow up after our Living the Eucharist program that we did during Lent. Altaration is designed to stir thought, create conversation, dispel myths, and inspire young souls to a deep and lasting love for the Mass. The goal of Altaration is not to fill teens heads with information but to pierce their hearts with transformation. BASILICA CHOIR PERFORMS CONCERT CELEBRATING EASTER AND PENTECOST The Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, will present a special concert entitled Come to Us, Creative Spirit on Sunday, May 20th at 3:00 pm, as part of the Basilica s Concert Series. At this concert, the Basilica Choir will perform music celebrating the many facets of this holy season, including music by Mozart, Mendelssohn, Vaughan Williams and local composers Marshall Webb, Wm. Glenn Osborne, Gary Prettyman and more. Also performed will be Handel s famous Hallelujah Chorus from Messiah. The Basilica Choir was founded to minister to the many thousands of tourists and visitors to the central Florida area, and to provide sacred music at weekend Masses. The singers in the choir are all professional musicians in the Orlando area and are under the direction of Dr. William Picher. Admission charge for the concert is $25 for adults, under 12 are free. Praying the Holy Rosary Veneration of the image of the Blessed Virgin flower offering to the Queen of May, and a commemoration reminiscent of Our Lady of Fatima apparition will be some of the activities that will be observed that day. The day will include two teaching sessions covering 1.The Story of Fatima, and 2.Standing Firm with Mary A free lunch and snack is served during the event. Xin Đức Mẹ chúc lành cho chúng ta. Tôi xin chia sẻ với Anh Chị Em gốc tích Tháng Hoa như sau: Hàng năm, vào những thế kỷ đầu, khi tháng Năm về, người Rôma tôn kính hoa là Nữ thần mùa Xuân. Các tín hữu Công giáo nhân cơ hội này đã đi cắt những bông hoa xinh đẹp để trang hoàng nhà thờ, đặc biệt dâng kính tại toà Đức Mẹ. Đến thế kỷ 14, cha Henri Suzo thuộc Dòng Đaminh, vào ngày đầu tháng 5, đã lấy hoa trang hoàng tượng Đức Mẹ và tổ chức việc tôn kính Đức Nữ Vương. Thánh Philipphê Nêri cũng vào đầu tháng 5, đã tập họp các trẻ em dâng hoa lên bàn thờ Đức Mẹ. Đầu thế kỷ 17 tại Napoli nước Ý, các nữ tu Dòng Phanxicô đã phát động Tháng Đức Mẹ: mỗi chiều đều có Chầu Mình Thánh và hát kính Đức Mẹ. Từ đó tháng Đức Mẹ đã nhanh chóng lan rộng khắp các xứ đạo. Đầu thế kỷ 19, hầu hết mọi xứ trong Giáo Hội đều long trọng kính Tháng Đức Mẹ và lấy thời gian sau Chúa Nhật Phục Sinh tức là Tháng 5 để tôn kính Đức Maria. Cha Chardon người Pháp đã có rất nhiều công trong việc phát động Tháng Hoa kính Đức Mẹ tại nước Pháp và cả những nước Công Giáo khác nữa. Tại Việt Nam, các xứ đạo đều có kiệu hoa hay dâng hoa kính Đức Mẹ vào mỗi tháng 5. Tại hải ngoại, các giáo xứ và giáo đoàn Việt Nam cũng dâng hoa kính Mẹ: Tháng Năm dâng tiến Mẹ hiền, Ngàn hoa tươi thắm bao niềm an vui. Sứ điệp Tin Mừng hôm nay rất tuyệt vời. Chúa Giêsu đã không nói, Hãy yêu mến Thầy như Thầy đã yêu mến anh em. Nhưng Chúa nói, Hãy yêu thương nhau như Thầy đã yêu thương anh em (Gioan 15:12). Chúng ta hãy yêu thương và nâng đỡ nhau nhé!
