John 3:16a The Most Holy Trinity The Holy Trinity is one of those mysteries that we will never understand, yet we still believe. A homiletics teacher once warned never to speak of the Trinity for more than ten minutes, or for sure you would get into heresy. Good advice. It is easy to talk in circles around this great mystery and never get close to understanding three Persons in One God. We are only one person each, and never one in being with another person. So how can we possibly understand this? We can't. But we can contemplate the varied faces of Father, Spirit, and Son as they are presented to us in today's scriptures, and give glory to God and believe. GLORY AND PRAISE FOREVER When Moses went up Mount Sinai, God revealed the divine Self to him by name. "The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God" (Exodus 34:6). In the Old Testament, we are accustomed to assuming that the "Lord GOD" indicates the Father only. But in the retrospect with which we look at these readings, we can see that the title is inclusive of the three persons of the Trinity. Never has there been any separation of the three persons in one God, and although there may be mention of only one person, it is understood that all three persons are present. Jesus taught many times that he and the Father are one, and that the Holy Spirit would come upon us and remind us of all things. We believe in God, creator of all that is, the Son, redeemer of our human lives and giver of eternal life, and the Holy Spirit, inspiration of the prophets and lover of all humanity; holy Wisdom, inspiring in us the understanding of all things holy. GOD SO LOVED THE WORLD When we hear in the oft-quoted text in John 3:16 that "God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life," we begin to see how language that expresses the sending of the Son fails to express the unity of the Holy Trinity. This failure of human language in the presence of the mystery of the Trinity is what makes it so hard to explain and comprehend. So how can we respond when we see a reference to "God"? We can strive to remember that God is three persons, not just one as we are, but one in being. Our best response is praise to the Holy Trinity. "Glory to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, to God who is, who was, and who is to come." And we can bless each other when we pray with Saint Paul, "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you" (2 Corinthians 13:13). Lúc 7g tối tại Nhà Thờ Xin mời quí vị đến tham dự. Lễ Chúa Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa là tình yêu. Tình yêu thì không thể sống đơn độc nên phải có Ba Ngôi. Vì yêu thương không chỉ là cho đi nhưng còn là nhận lãnh. Muốn cho đi, phải có đối tượng để nhận lãnh. Muốn nhận lãnh cũng đòi phải có người sẵn sàng cho đi. Vì Thiên Chúa là tình yêu, nên Thiên Chúa là Ba Ngôi để có thể cho đi và nhận lãnh. Thiên Chúa là tình yêu tuyệt hảo nên sự cho đi và nhận lãnh ở nơi Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa cũng đạt đến mức tuyệt hảo. Thiên Chúa Cha trao ban cho Chúa Con tất cả những gì mình có, nên Chúa Con là hình ảnh hoàn hảo củachúa Cha, đến nỗi Chúa Giêsu có thể nói: Ai thấy Thầy là xem thấy Cha Thầy, Thầy và Cha là một. Vì yêu, Chúa con dâng lại cho Chúa Cha tất cả những gì mình nhận lãnh. Việc hiến dâng này ta thấy rõ trong thái độ khiêm tốn, tự hạ, vâng phục vô biên của Chúa Giêsu đối với Chúa Cha. Chúa Giêsu đã vâng lời cho đến chết và chết trên thập giá. Chúa Giêsu đã quả quyết: Không có tình yêu nào lớn lao hơn tình yêu của người dám hy sinh mạng sống vì bạn hữu. Và Người đã vì Chúa Cha mà hiến mạng sống. Thiên Chúa là tình yêu tuyệt đối. Tình yêu ấy không chỉ đóng kín nơi bản thân mình. Cũng không chỉ dừng lại ở một đối tượng hạn hẹp. Nhưng vượt mọi ranh giới, lan toả đến mọi góc biển chân trời. Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa là một bầu trời tình yêu hạnh phúc. Nhưng tình yêu của Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa không chỉ thu gọn trong cộng đoàn Ba Ngôi, mà lan toả đến khắp vũ trụ, ấp ủ cả thế giới, nâng niu cả sinh linh vạn vật. Ba Ngôi là một lò lửa tình yêu. Lò lửa tinh luyện tình yêu càng ngày càng phong phú, là nguồn mạch của mọi tình yêu trên đời. Mầu nhiệm một Chúa Ba Ngôi như thế không xa vời. Trái lại rất gần gũi, thiết thân với đời sống chúng ta, là nguồn mạch sự sống của ta, là khuôn mẫu ta phải noi theo, là cùng đích ta phải đạt tới. Ta ra đời là do tình yêu của Thiên Chúa. Có thể nói nhân loại là kết tinh của tình yêu Thiên Chúa. Khi tạo dựng con người, Thiên Chúa đã nói: Ta hãy tạo dựng con người giống hình ảnh Ta. Thiên Chúa là tình yêu. Con người giống Thiên Chúa vì có trái tim biết yêu thương. Cây cỏ không có trái tim biết yêu thương. Cầm thú không có khả năng yêu thương. Chỉ có con người mới có khả năng yêu thương vì con người giống Thiên Chúa. Con người phải thanh luyện cho tình yêu ngày càng thêm tinh tuyền, thêm quảng đại, thêm phong phú. Càng yêu thương con người càng nên giống Thiên Chúa. Càng quảng đại con người càng gần với trái tim Thiên Chúa. Càng quên mình con người càng tham dự vào sự sống Thiên Chúa. Được sinh ra trong tình yêu nên con người phải sống bằng tình yêu. Như thế con người mới sống trọn định mệnh đời mình. 6 GLORIA Y ALABANZA POR SIEMPRE Cuando Moisés subió al monte Sinaí, Dios le hizo la revelación más extraordinaria, Dios le reveló su nombre: "Señor, Señor, Dios compasivo y misericordioso" (Éxodo 34:6). En el Antiguo Testamento, estamos acostumbrados a asumir que "Señor, Dios" indica solamente a Dios Padre. Pero en la retrospectiva con la que vemos a estas lecturas, podemos ver que el título incluye a las tres personas de la Santísima Trinidad. Nunca ha habido alguna separación de las tres personas en un solo Dios, y aun cuando solo se mencione a una de las personas de la Santísima Trinidad, se entiende que las tres están presentes. Jesús enseñó muchas veces que él y el Padre son uno, y que el Espíritu Santo vendría a nosotros y nos haría recordar muchos eventos. Creemos en Dios, creador de todo lo que existe; el Hijo, redentor de la vida y dador de la vida eterna, y el Espíritu Santo, inspiración de los profetas y amante de toda la humanidad, la sabiduría sagrada, que nos inspira a comprender todas las cosas santas. La ciencia no ha podido resolver el misterio de cómo el universo surgió ni explicar exactamente qué es lo que continúa dándole energía creadora y diseño magistral. Ninguna religión afirma que ha encontrado las palabras para nombrar plenamente el misterio inefable de Dios, ya que no importa qué nombre usemos, Dios siempre transciende nuestra limitada capacidad de comprensión. Dios es un misterio en el que se cree y que no se conoce. Y sin embargo, nosotros los cristianos creemos que el nombre que usamos para Dios es el que mejor expresa ese misterio inexpresable: Dios es la Santísima Trinidad de tres personas unidas en una comunión de amor, que se vierte en amor creador, salvador y santificador sobre el mundo. 7 100 th ANNIVERSARY OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA Plenary Indulgence Diocese of Oakland His Holiness Pope Francis has granted a plenary indulgence opportunity for the 100th anniversary of the Fatima apparitions throughout the centennial year, which will end on November 26, To obtain the plenary indulgence, the faithful must also fulfill the ordinary conditions: go to Confession and Communion, be interiorly detached from sin, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. There are three ways to obtain the indulgence: 1. Make a pilgrimage to the Shrine in Fatima, Portugal To the faithful who make a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal and participate in a celebration of prayer dedicated to the Virgin. In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed, and invoke the Mother of God. 2. Pray before any statue of Our Lady of Fatima To the faithful who visit with devotion a statue of Our Lady of Fatima solemnly exposed for public veneration in any church, oratory or proper place during the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May to October 2017, and there devoutly participate in some celebration or prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary. In addition, the faithful must pray the Our Father, recite the Creed and invoke Our Lady of Fatima. In the Diocese of Oakland, Bishop Barber has designated Saint Joseph the Worker Parish in Berkeley as the Pilgrim Shrine for our Diocese. The Parish has prepared a series of celebrations in honor of our Lady, including a special Masses every month, and a celebration with Bishop Barber on October The elderly and infirm To the faithful who, because of age, illness or other serious cause, are unable to get around, may pray in front of a statue of Our Lady of Fatima and must spiritually unite themselves to the jubilee celebrations on the days of the apparitions, the 13th of each month, between May and October They must also offer to merciful God with confidence, through Mary, their prayers and sufferings or the sacrifices they make in their own lives. May the Lord, through the intercession of Our Lady of Fatima, st eng hen our faith, sustain our hope, and ig ite our charit.
