Anthony s Faith Formation Corner Romans 11:33-36: The Depth and the Wisdom and the Knowledge of God The very short second reading for this Sunday, taken from St. Paul s letter to the Romans, is of great importance for our spiritual life. With some references to the Old Testament, especially from the books of Isaiah and Job, Paul writes: Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How inscrutable his judgments and how unsearchable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord or who has been his counselor? Or who has given the Lord anything that he may be repaid? For from him and through him and for him all things are. I believe that this short passage very well sums up the whole of our Christian spiritualty. First of all, the first rule of our Christian faith is that we are indebted to God for everything. God created the whole universe out of nothing creatio ex nihilo. Most importantly, God created people in his own likeness and image. God did not need his creatures for his well being. Rather, God created us so that we could participate in his life and love. There is this sense of total dependence on God on the part of us human beings. St. Paul, echoing Job, is totally right: no one has given God anything so as to expect a payback. Quite the contrary: everything we have initially came from God and ultimately will return to him in traditional Catholic theology, this is known as the exitus/reditus schema. Secondly, we can never fully understand the riches and the wisdom of God. Indeed, his ways are incomprehensible to the human mind. To see how this is the case, one just has to go through a few stories in the Bible. God always has a way to choose the least likely characters to carry out his plan: David, Hannah, Mary, etc. In the Gospels, Jesus proclamation of the Kingdom of God serves as a reminder that God s way sometimes is a reversal of normal human expectations. That is why we hear a lot of phrases like: The first shall be last and the last shall be first, and Sinners and tax collectors will enter Kingdom before you [righteous people]. Even in this Sunday s Gospel reading from Matthew 16, we can see how God s plan defies normal expectations. Peter correctly professed Jesus as the Christ, but who did he understand the Christ to be? Peter as well as all the Jews expecting the coming of the Messiah conceived of a powerful Messiah, or Christ, who would triumph over the Romans and who would eventually restore the Kingdom of David. But instead Jesus was talking about a suffering Christ on the cross. Peter could not conceive of that. His ways were far from God s ways At the end of the day, I invite all of us to reflect on what we have in our own lives. Given all our ups and downs, joys and sorrows, blessings and misfortunes alike: do we not see that everything we have comes from God? We can also reflect on our spiritual lives/journeys: where we have arrived spiritually You have to say with St. Paul, that the ways of God are indeed inscrutable. Oh the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! 4 TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Eucharistic Prayer II is a popular choice for Mass since it is both simple in structure and short. It is written with a preface, which is the section after the dialogue "The Lord be with you... Lift up your hearts... Let us give thanks," which introduces all the Eucharistic Prayers. The preface states the reason for the eucharistic assembly on that occasion, and there are dozens of them covering almost every imaginable gathering for prayer, some specific to feasts, others for Masses for the dead or for other needs. The preface attached to the second Eucharistic Prayer may be dropped in favor of a more appropriate choice, especially one of the prefaces for weekdays. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal says that Eucharistic Prayer II is best suited for weekdays or "special circumstances." In practice, however, it has become the common Sunday prayer because of its brevity and its comfortable familiarity. It also includes an optional phrase for adding the name of a deceased person remembered in the Mass, and therefore is often prayed at funerals. Article 50 of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy specified that the rites are to be simplified and restored "to the vigor they had in the tradition of the Fathers." The rebirth of this ancient Roman prayer is a worthy response to this call. --Rev. Do tranh chấp nên chiến tranh bùng nổ, hận thù có cơ hội được khơi lên. Nếu con người, cách riêng các nhà lãnh đạo, ý thức quyền bính là để phục vụ, để xây dựng cộng đoàn, xã hội, chắc chắn thế giới sẽ có một bộ mặt khác, đời sống sẽ êm đẹp hơn, hạnh phúc hơn. Khi trao chìa khóa Nước Trời cho Phê-rô, Chúa Giê-su cũng muốn ông sống theo tinh thần đó của Tin Mừng: Một khi đã trở lại, hãy làm cho anh em của anh nên vững mạnh (Lc 22,32). Người ta đã trách Giáo Hội Công Giáo đề cao quyền tháo cởi, quyền chìa khóa của đức giáo hoàng. Thực ra, trong thành tâm thiện chí và trong ý hướng tốt lành của các đấng kế vị Thánh Phê-rô, khẩu hiệu Tôi tớ của mọi tôi tớ vẫn luôn là ngọn đuốc soi đường cho các vị giáo hoàng. Pero, lo que es más importante, también nos vio en el momento en que Dios prefiere vernos: capaces de manifestar gran fe, con el deseo de permanecer a los pies de Cristo para comprender lo que realmente es ser Mesías y ser Cristo. Como nos lo señala hoy la carta a los romanos, no hemos conocido jamás el pensamiento del Señor o llegado a ser su consejero, mas Dios nos conoce y aún elije para que manifestemos el reino de justicia, gozo, hermosura y paz. Como una de las Hermanas de Loreto, fue profesora y enseñó a niñas en las escuelas de su comuni dad religiosa en la India por veinte años. Pero en 1946, mientras viaja en tren hacia las monta ñas, de pronto se dio cuenta que Dios la llama ba para algo más, servir a los más pobres de los pobres. En la ciudad de Calcuta, muchas personas desamparadas vivían y morían en las calles. Un día la Hermana Teresa se encontró con una mujer moribunda tendida enfrente de un hospital. Ella estuvo con la mujer hasta que esta murió. A partir de entonces, se dedicó al cuidado de los más pobres de los pobres en la India. Ella fundó Nirmal Hriday (Corazón Pu ro), una casa de asistencia para moribundos en lo que había sido un templo hindú, donde lospobres, desamparados fueron atendidos y morían con dignidad cuando nadie más los cuidaba. Ella también fundó un orfanatorio y un leprosario.
