1 Fr. Daniel McMullin Associate Dean of Students Cornell University I don t pray like I used to. Fr. McMullin will talk about the evolution of his personal prayer. The beginnings of Prayer Reasons why it changed How I pray today If you ve been struggling to find a new way to pray - Perhaps a new beginning for your prayer... this session is for you!! Join us on Sunday, January 27 in Church from 2:00-3:00 pm. This will be our first in a series on Prayer, our Direct Line to God. I Don t Do the Good I Want to Do! Romans 7: (Read it!) Church of the Most Holy Trinity 1460 Ridge Road Webster, New York (585) Fax (website) ( ) wholytri@dor.org The older I get the more interested I become in what moves people to want what they want. What is it that resonates in a person that makes them want to spend their time and money on some object or activity? It starts with our appetites. Certain things are built into us that create a readiness for what appeals to the senses or the imagination. Most things come to us this way. Smelling bacon in the morning starts a wonderful desire that leads to breakfast. Other things appeal to our spiritual senses. Telling the truth. Being faithful, courageous, or generous. These things have True Value as do... people, family, faith, country. Now there s a problem. Sometimes the lower senses of our physical nature can overpower our higher sensibilities. (try being patient when you haven t eaten all day!). Other appetites insist we possess certain things: a new cell phone, lap top, puppy, vacation spot, etc. These can have a certain urgency that creates a want before we realize it. What s wrong with wanting something? Nothing at all. It s how God made us. The problem comes when wanting is for something I Shouldn t have. This can cause a real tussle. But I WAAAANT IT!, we cried as children (as our parents wisely hid the candy, or ordered the TV turned off). And thus began the life long struggle to achieve the proper balance between need and want. As a priest I get a bird s eye view of this struggle when hearing confessions. People come to confess their sins. Most often sin starts by wanting something contrary to what is right and good. This wanting can be VERY powerful. Eventually it can outweigh the attraction to the higher good. The good loses its appeal. We fall prey to a desire that takes us away from who we really want to be. Addictions can begin here. (**CONTINUED ON PAGE 2**)

2 Page Two So how can we stop wanting what is bad for us? It comes in finding something I want more. Something in us has to be bigger than the powerful desires for booze, sex, possessions, prestige, popularity, etc. The problem is at the feeling level. I can know an ideal is good but not FEEL it. But with (pick your go to sin!)... your brain knows it s sinful but there s a powerful wanting at the feeling level. What can give us, not just the knowledge about what is right, but the felt wanting to do it? The answer of course is love. Love in the form of loyalty. Think for a moment of those people who are privileged to have your love and loyalty... your spouse, the children, your best friend. Holy Trinity Church, Webster, New York From the Faith Formation Office Preparation for First Eucharist Children who are currently enrolled in Grade Two (or later), and who have completed at least one full year of Faith Formation (First Grade or later) in our parish program or in a Catholic School, and have received their Sacrament of First Penance, will begin to prepare to receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist on the following dates: Tuesday, April 9, 23 and 30 th. These sessions will be held from 6:30 pm. 8:00 pm. There will also be a First Eucharist Retreat (for Children) on Saturday, April 27 th from 10:00 am. 12:00 pm. Think how many times you walked away from something you really wanted because of your love for them. In most cases it wasn t even close! (Your daughter s need for braces far outweighed your wanting that vacation trip) Finally... God wants to be in that same privileged place as your daughter or friend. He wants us to walk away from some of our wants because of our love for Him. Jesus did this very thing in the garden. Father please. Take this away... but not what I want... help me to want what YOU want. It s a grace from God to want what He wants. Ask for it. His will for us is our peace. Fr. Tim Baked Goods and Gift Baskets NEEDED! Donations of baked goods and gift baskets are needed for the annual youth Pasta Dinner on Saturday, January 26th. Proceeds will help fund the Holy Trinity youth trip to the National Catholic Youth Conference in November If you are able to help the youth by donating baked goods or a gift basket, please sign up at the Welcome Desk after Mass or call the Parish Office. Thank you in advance for your support! Right now we have 9 cakes and 3 batches of cookies. We are doing the birthday month raffle, so we need more cakes and a ton more desserts. So, if you can help please call the Parish Office. Thank you!! An important part of the preparation to receive First Eucharist is for parents to take an active part in teaching your child the following prayers: The Sign of the Cross, Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be. Also, attending Mass with your child every weekend is a very important part of the preparation to receive First Eucharist. There are two dates for the reception of First Eucharist as a group: Saturday, May 4 th OR Saturday, May 11 th. Both will begin at 10:00 am. at Holy Trinity. Families may choose either date for their child to receive First Eucharist. For more information on our events or programs, please contact the Faith Formation office at (585) or us at tricia.kull@dor.org. BRINGING FAITH HOME Did you know that this week is No Name Calling Week? What a great week to talk about the importance of kind behavior and treating others how we would want to be treated ourselves. Guess what Jesus perfectly understood and taught the solution to meanness and bullying. He'd been teaching it a full two thousand years before we were ever born! You might have heard these teachings described as The Golden Rule. Jesus s core teachings of empathy and compassion for others can be modeled in our family. Together, discuss ways that you can challenge yourselves every day this week to look for opportunities to demonstrate The Golden Rule principles. Get together at the end of each day to share the ways that you found to be kind and compassionate and show God s love at home, at sports, at school, at work! Our Mission We are a Catholic faith community blessed with the joy of God s love. Together we share this love with all who hunger for God s presence in their lives. We follow Christ who taught us to find God by giving our lives in service to others and gathering to celebrate a Eucharist that welcomes everyone. Join us on this journey!

We have signs which let drivers know that there is a cross walk, but it is up to the pedestrian to make sure it is safe to cross. Our efforts to make sure everyone arrives and leaves safely is our utmost priority. Altar Candles will burn this week for the following special intentions.
