4 Lent Begins Ash Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are not included in the count). Lent is a time when many Christians prepare for Easter by observing a period of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline. During Ash Wednesday services, the foreheads of worshipers will lightly be rubbed with the sign of the cross with ashes. Fast and Abstinence The Bishops of the US prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are 14 years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, on all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons 18 years of age and older, up to and including their 59th birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light Prayer For Ash Wednesday Blessed are you, O Lord our God, the all-holy one, who gives us life and all things. As we go about our lives, the press of our duties and activities often leads us to forget your presence and your love. We fall into sin and fail to live out the responsibilities that you have entrusted to those who were baptized into your Son. In this holy season, help us to turn our minds and hearts back to you. Lead us into sincere repentance and renew our lives with your grace. Help us to remember that we are sinners, but even more, help us to remember your loving mercy. As we live through this Ash Wednesday, may the crosses of ashes that mark our foreheads be a reminder to us and to those we meet that we belong to your Son. May our worship and prayer and penitence this day be sustained throughout these 40 days of Lent. Bring us refreshed and renewed to the celebration of Christ s resurrection at Easter. We ask this through your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever Catholic Charities Appeal Giving Hope To All You can find appeal Brochures and Pledge Cards in the church pews. 5 Dear Partnering Parishioners, Please Be Good Christian Stewards It takes parishioners to maintain a parish... your church home. We all need to share in the responsibility of helping our parishes thrive through our love for God expressed in our full, conscious, active participation every Sunday and Holy Day of Obligation, and in your consistent sacrificial giving through your Church Offering envelopes. As you maintain your homes, please, according to your means, consider increasing your offerings by a few more dollars to help your Church home. I sincerely thank you for being good stewards. If you need or are not getting Church Offering Envelopes please call the Rectory or us and we will help you. Lent is coming it is our spiritual spring training camp! It is Mardi Gras time, you know, Fat Tuesday and all that fun stuff because we know that the next day begins a special and holy season called Lent. This Wednesday, February 14 th is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the penitential season of Lent. There are six weeks of Lent. The final week is called Holy Week, and the last three days are called the Paschal Triduum: Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter. This holy season is penitential in nature. That is why as a Church we intensify our traditional practices through prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Use this holy season to draw closer to the Lord whose love for you is everlasting and whose mercy endures forever. Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving Here are the rules for Fast and Abstinence Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fast and abstinence from meat All the Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence from meat. Our faith community will again participate in Operation Rice Bowl this Lent. Operation Rice Bowl is the official Lenten program of Catholic Relief Services, and calls Catholics in the United States to reach out in solidarity with the poor around the world through the traditional Lenten practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving (learning and giving). Operation Rice Bowl helps us to simplify our lifestyle, learn about the challenges faced by the poor each day and give the balance saved through fasting and other sacrifices. By participating in these three activities, we come to understand our call to be a part of one global community.
