2 Page 2 Introduction Extraordinary Minister Training Qualifications Faithful who possess good qualities of hristian life and morals One who fosters own devotion to the Eucharist One who is an example to faithful by reverence and devotion Must be registered at St. Ann, have received the Sacrament of onfirmation and if married, be married in accordance with hurch law. Must be certified by the Archbishop upon request by the pastor. ertification is effective for 3 years. Those under the age of 18 are certified for one year. After 3 or 1 year must be re-certified. Pastor/priest presiding at liturgy can commission for a single occasion. What is an Extra Ordinary Minister of Holy ommunion? Lay person or religious to assist priest in distributing Holy ommunion. Proper to priesthood, EM s are necessary due to limited clergy. Ordinary Minister always takes precedence over EM Way of Life: Seek holiness through reconciliation, expanding knowledge of faith through Adult Faith Formation opportunities and personal study. Prayer individually, through participation at Mass and before the Blessed Sacrament. After consecration the Blessed Sacrament is called the host or the sacred body, and the chalice or the precious blood. This is a tenant of our atholic Faith. Your demeanor should always reflect this belief.

3 + Page 3 Procedures before Mass Please arrive in attire that appropriate for serving. No shorts, flip-flops, revealing clothing, inappropriate T-shirts, etc. You are giving Jesus to those who receive. Dress accordingly. Please check in with the Mass oordinator at the sign in board in the narthex 10 minutes before Mass. Write your name and remember your position. Please ask the Mass coordinator if you are unsure of your communion station location. During Mass If you are distributing the Precious Body of hrist, please use hand sanitizer (on the cart) before lining up to receive ommunion. Please line up to receive communion down the side aisle by the Baptismal Font. After receiving the Body (and Blood) of hrist walk towards the altar, reverence it, and get your plate or cup and proceed to your assigned station. Proceed to your station to distribute to the congregation. If you are walking to the balcony or cry room (or narthex for large gatherings) cover the ciborium with you hand or cover the communion cup with the purificator. Please be aware of the Hospitality Ministers that might direct you to someone who cannot stand in line. If your station is one of the first to be finished, please stand by until ommunion is almost over to insure that you do not need to hand off or replace a minister that may deplete the Sacred Body or Precious Blood before their line is complete. While performing their ministry, EMHs do not bow or genuflect to the altar. Please return your vessel to the cart near the sacristy. Do not place the purificator in the cup. Return immediately to your seat. Please do not linger near the cart or sacristy. Please do not carry on a conversation near the sacristy with others you may know. There will be hand sanitizer in the room if you choose to use it after rinsing. If the Precious Blood remains, please consume it at the cart, not at your station. Remember: Do not wipe the interior of the cup with the purificator.

4 Page 4 + Manner of Receiving/Distributing Holy ommunion: ommunion is allowed under both species and on the hand ommunion is not to be denied to those who kneel or stand. The host should be held in such a way to be offered over the ciborium. The communicant should consume the host before leaving. If they do not, stop and ask the sacristan or an usher to follow the person and ask them to consume the host. The ciborium and cup should be held heart high as the Extraordinary Minister says The Body of hrist or The Blood of hrist Do not address people by name. Keep everything you do very reverent. When distributing the Precious Blood, please wipe the lip of the cup after someone has received and turn it (1/4 turn). Please open the purificator and use it completely. Intinction (dipping the hosts in the chalice) can only be performed by a Priest. It is not encouraged in this Archdiocese. Accidents: If host falls, pick it up and consume it immediately. If the host cannot be consumed, it may be taken to the credence table and given to the Sacristan. If Precious Blood spills, place the purificator on it, ask a person to in line to wait and seek help from the sacristan. (emergency Purificators are now located in the balcony.

5 Page 5 Furthering your Ministry Extraordinary Ministers of Holy ommunion to Sick and Homebound Extraordinary Ministers of Holy ommunion (EMHs) who take ommunion to the sick and homebound have a role in sharing the hurch s total ministry to the sick after the manner of Jesus. In bringing ommunion to the sick and homebound, the EMH represents hrist and manifests faith and charity on behalf of the whole community toward those who cannot be present at Sunday Mass. This ministry is a sign of support and concern shown by the community for its members. Patients who are in the hospital find it a comfort and source of healing to have Holy ommunion brought to them as often as possible. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy ommunion may make ommunion visits any day of the week in accordance with the schedule and the protocol of each hospital or long-term residential facility. The EMH becomes a vital link between the parish community and the member who is sick or homebound. It is beneficial for visits to the sick and homebound to occur after Sunday Mass so that the link between the parish liturgical celebration and the parishioner is maintained. Taking a parish bulletin also helps maintain that link. The parish may also have a special blessing and dismissal for EMHs after ommunion; the assembly is sending them forth to do their ministry on the behalf of the whole parish community. EMHs do not replace the ministry of the priest to the people, but rather extend and expand it so that all will have more regular contact with hrist in Holy ommunion. EMHs who minister to the sick and homebound should be empathic and compassionate. They should be sensitive to the sick and homebound person s needs including the spiritual, emotional, and material. They should always take care to maintain the confidentiality and dignity of the individual. They should also maintain contact with the parish pastoral care coordinator or ministry leader and inform them if the person is in need of sacramental anointing, the sacrament of reconciliation, or a pastoral visit. In addition, if EMHs observe a particular physical or social need of a homebound person, they should bring this need to the attention of the pastoral care coordinator as well so that the parish may respond appropriately. According to the document Holy ommunion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass, The Eucharist for ommunion outside of church is to be carried in a pyx or other covered vessel; the vesture of the minister and the manner of carrying the Eucharist should be appropriate and in accord with local circumstances. In the Archdiocese of Atlanta, EMHs dress in appropriate lay attire when bringing ommunion to the sick or homebound. onsecrated hosts are usually taken from the EMH s home parish or from the particular hospital s tabernacle. Follow the procedures of the parish or hospital. EMHs serving in hospitals or institutions should always be sure that they are giving Holy ommunion to the correct person. If there are atholic family members or atholic staff present, the EMH should ask them if they would like to receive Holy ommunion as well. When EMHs have completed their assigned distribution, they should return any extra hosts to the hospital tabernacle or consume the hosts privately. Extraordinary Ministers of ommunion who are taking Holy ommunion to the sick, homebound or to those in hospitals are to present the host in a prayerful manner. They are not to make judgments regarding the suitability of the person to receive the Holy ommunion; such concerns are to be referred to the pastor or pastoral care coordinator. Ordinarily, the parish pastoral care coordinator makes assignments and communicates assignments to the EMHs and the sick and homebound.
