3 Pastor s Column January 3-4, 2015 Gold, Frankincense, and Myrrh This weekend we celebrate the Solemnity of the Epiphany of the Lord. Our Gospel tells the story of the mysterious magi from the east. When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem saying, Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage. Not much is known about them. They have been described as kings, wise men and astrologers. The term magi comes from a Greek word referring to a priestly caste of the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism. Whoever, they were, they certainly were not Jews. The arrival of the magi represents the fulfillment of Isaiah s prophecy which we heard in our first reading: Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you. We are not even sure how many magi there actually were, but traditionally there are three to correspond to the three gifts mentioned by Saint Matthew: They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The specific mentioning of what these three gifts were implies that their substance is important; much more important than the number or names or occupations of the ones presenting them. Gold is a gift for a King, symbolizing Jesus' kingship. Frankincense is an incense used by priests, thus symbolizing Jesus' priesthood. Myrrh is used in embalming the dead, which prophetically signifies that Jesus was born to die. Just as the magi offered the infant Jesus their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, so must we offer him our gifts as well. We need to acknowledge Jesus as our King and the Lord of our life. We offer our gift of gold by surrendering to him the precious gift of our free will, submitting our will to his holy will and following him where he leads us. We must look to Jesus as our High Priest and follow his example. We offer him our gift of frankincense by offering ourselves as a sacrifice of praise to God. And we must live our lives according to the words and teachings of Jesus our Great Prophet. We offer him our gift of myrrh by following his commandments and laws in this life so that we may one day spend eternity with him in the next. God can never be outdone in generosity. When we offer God our gifts, we receive so much more in return. By virtue of our baptism we share in Christ s three-fold ministry of Priest, Prophet and King. As we begin a New Year, let s pray that we may receive the gold, frankincense, and myrrh God gives to us and put those gifts to good use in love and service of one another. Happy New Year! - Fr. Bob
