Jesus is called the gate of the sheep in today s gospel. The risen Christ opens the way to abundant life. He anoints our heads with oil and guides us beside the still waters of our baptism. Each Sunday he spreads a feast before us in the midst of the world s violence and war. 2 HOPE LUTHERAN CHURCH 4131 Lehigh Drive, Cherryville, PA hopecherryville.org FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER MAY 7, 2017 CORE PURPOSE STATEMENT: People of Hope: working together, with God, to love and serve others HOPE'S HELPING HANDS - will be sponsoring a Sunday morning coffee hour TODAY, Sunday, May 7 th from 9:15 to 10:00am. Come join us for some coffee/tea and baked goods, fellowship and a slide presentation highlighting some of the outreach activities that we have been involved in at the local, regional and national level. On behalf of the committee members of Hope's Helping Hands we want to thank our church members for their support of our fundraising which helps us in our efforts to be a helping hand to those in need. We are always looking for more people to join our efforts and perhaps getting a small peek at some of what we do, will inspire others to join us. CAR-WASH-FOR-A-CAUSE - Hope s youth group and Confirmation mentor program are holding a Car-Wash-For-A-Cause NEXT Saturday, May 13 th from 9:00am - 2:00pm. Our Confirmation students will choose a charity to donate the profits to. Come out on a nice spring day (hopefully), get your car washed, and support our youth and the charity of their choice! THE CHURCH HAS LEFT THE BUILDING - Due to its very positive response and requests to help more in the church and the community, the Stewardship Committee is sponsoring another The Church Has Left the Building day. It will be held on Sunday, May 21 st. A light lunch will be provided after the 10:30am service and then members will be launched into service projects around the area. Sign-up boards are posted in the narthex! There are tasks on site at Hope and out in the community, so choose one that appeals to you! Please see the list of items we are collecting on a separate page in this insert. THANK YOU to anyone who bake cakes last weekend for our 3 neighboring food banks. We delivered 100 cakes and 35 cake mix packets last Monday. The food banks really appreciated the wonderful support. Thank you so much for all of your help. WELCA

3 SUMMER WORSHIP - The summer worship surveys results were reviewed. 214 members responded to the survey which requested members to weigh in on the proposal of moving to one 9:00 AM service during the summer or maintaining two services. One a scale of 1 to 5 (with 5 indicating highly in favor of having one service), 80% of respondents answered with a 4 or 5 (60% of members selected 5 and 20% of members selected 4). Acting on that input, council approved one service at 9:00am during the summer season beginning with Sunday, June 18 th and going through Sunday, September 3 rd. We will reflect on this decision in the fall. BEAR CREEK CAMP - is a ministry of the Southeastern and Northeastern Pennsylvania Synods of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). Located on nearly 3,000 acres in the beauty of the Pocono Mountains, Bear Creek Camp offers year-round opportunities, including summer residential youth camp, nature day camp, environmental education programs, weekend camp retreats and outside group rentals. You will find envelopes on the table in the narthex for your donations to help with Bear Creek Camp s Capital Campaign to raise funds to help the camp replace tents with cabins. Also, if your son or daughter attends the resident camp at Bear Creek, please know that there are camperships available to help defray some of the costs of camp. Please speak to Pastor Jami if your child is planning on attending camp this summer. HOPE FEST - This year's Hope Fest will take place on June 16 & 17 and planning is well under way for 2 evenings of music, food, and fellowship. In preparation, we will be looking for donations of turkeys, items for the Chinese Auction, cakes, soups, and, of course, volunteers. As always, we would not be able to hold this event without the support of the church and its members, so please consider helping, attending, or both! POLLING FACILITY Hope Church has been asked to be a polling facility for Northampton County for the Lehigh/Pennsville Area. The primary election will be held on May 16 th and the general election on November 7 th. The Council approved this request. We are looking for volunteers to work in the kitchen that day to help with a bake sale. If you can help during the day or help with baking for the bake sale, please see the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the narthex. We will also be selling hot dogs and coffee, soda and water. Please call the church office at for more information. CEMETERY PLOTS two cemetery plots are for sale in the Garden of Serenity at the Bethlehem Memorial Park Cemetery. 4 VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL coming July 10 14, Hero Central. Your children will enjoy an interactive, energizing, Bible-based good time as they discover their strength in God. They will become Super Heroes and explore how to serve God and God s mission for their lives. Classes will be held from 9:00 AM until noon, with a closing program on Friday, July 14@ 7 pm. Ages include 3 yr. olds (potty trained) to children completing 6th grade in June Registrations can be made at vbs.hopecherryville.org or by completing a registration form located in the narthex. A T-shirt is provided for each student registering by Sunday, June 18th. Lots of help will be needed so please consider volunteering. A staff nursery is provided for volunteers if you have younger children who are not old enough to attend. Volunteers need to register as well. So come soar yourself into God s unstoppable love. Registration forms are available on the table in the narthex, or register online at vbs.hopecherryville.org. WOMEN OF FAITH - We will participate on Sunday, May 21 st with The Church has Left the Building event. We will help coordinate, sort and put items together for the Allentown Rescue Mission and the NICU at Lehigh Valley Hospital. Also, mark your calendars for Monday, June 26 th as we will be joining Pastor Jami to learn more about Martin Luther s wife, Katharina von Bora and her role in the Reformation. THURSDAY EVENING BIBLE STUDY has begun a new study titled CHRISTIAN VIRTUES written by Cindy Bunch. It is a nine study booklet and it will include such subjects as faith, justice, courage, love, and more. Everyone is welcome to attend and learn and grow in God's Word. We meet at 6:30pm in the second grade class room. Please join us! Doors open at 6:00pm (cash and carry sale until 6:45pm). Light refreshments will be available throughout the evening. This is a popular event and well-attended; it is open to the public. It is a great opportunity for you to buy some healthy plants for your home or garden at reasonable prices. It would be helpful if you could bring a box for your purchases.
