The church sees this promise fulfilled in Christ, who draws all people to himself when he is lifted up on the cross. Our baptismal covenant draws us to God's heart through Christ and draws God's light and truth into our hearts. We see God's heart most clearly in the way Jesus shares human suffering, in an agony both the John and Hebrews readings describe. CHURCH STAFF Pastor Rev. A very special thank you to Karen Zimmerman for managing this project and taking care of the glazing and firing of the chalices. One extra chalice was made and will be used by our Evangelism Committee when they do their monthly service at Northampton Village (2 nd Friday each month). DAFFODIL SUNDAY Celebrating Daffodil Days is about much more than enjoying beautiful flowers; it s about sharing hope for a world free from cancer. 3 MID-WEEK LENTEN SERVICES worship at 11:00am or each Wednesday in Lent. Come join your friends at Hope this Lenten Season, a powerful, life-changing journey that calls to prayerful and honest repentance. This Wednesday, March 28th is our last service for this Lenten season. PRAYER VIGIL - Again this year, we will have a prayer vigil from 11:00pm on Good Friday until 5:00am on Easter Sunday morning. This means we need volunteers to spend an hour in the church sanctuary during these hours in prayer and reflection. A sign-up sheet is posted on the rear wall of the nave. (limited supply of candy available). The candy made by our youth costs $10.00 per box. Proceeds benefit the 2012 youth gathering in New Orleans. We had a great turnout every day and we accomplished a great deal-from packing orders to distributing orders to clients-hope Church has come through again in assisting others in need. Anyone interested in being part of a list of individuals who can be called upon on an "as needed basis" for packing orders on either Wednesdays or Fridays, please contact Leslie Daniel at This list would be utilized when the food bank is short of volunteers on any given packing day. 4 HIS LAST DAYS will be performed at Hope Church by the Herald Biblical Theater on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at in the church sanctuary. A coffee hour will be hosted by the cast after the performance. HOPE HAS LOTS OF CHILDREN..BUT NONE TO SPARE..PLEASE DRIVE SAFELY IN THE PARKING LOTS - What a busy place this is on a Sunday morning! What a blessing that is too! If you walk outside on as Sunday School is letting out you will notice a lot of children walking through the parking lot and many cars lined up along the sidewalk to pick them up. This past Sunday there was a slight accident as a car was going the wrong way in the lot and another car backed into it. PLEASE observe and follow the arrows that mark the flow of traffic in the parking lot. Drive slowly and stay alert. Because..Hope has lots of children..but none to spare. SPONSORSHIPS NEEDED Hope Church has begun advertising our church s information in the Lehigh Valley Press papers; which include Northampton Press, East Penn Press, Bethlehem Press, Catasauqua Press and more. The cost will be $6.00 per week and we are asking for sponsorships (just like the flowers and bulletins) in honor, celebration or in memory of someone or something. Please see the sign-up sheet on the bulletin board in the narthex. WHAT IS THE BUILDING FUND? - By Pastor Jami Recently a new member asked me why there is a line on our envelopes for contributions to a Building Fund? Great question thanks for asking! The building fund initially was set up to help fund the original building of Hope Lutheran and the 1993 addition. We continue with a building fund today because every church has to attend to its building making sure there is funding for emergencies (like the air conditioning crashing), building maintenance (like the replacement of carpets and repainting projects) and large projects (like replacing the roof we re due soon). Regular contributions to that fund are encouraged to assure that we have enough reserves to take care of these property issues without having to run major campaigns when something breaks. So thank you for asking insightful questions AND supporting the building fund. EVANGELISM BIBLE STUDY will continue after Easter. Our new Bible Study will begin on Wednesday, April 11 th at 6:30pm. More information to follow on the title and topic of the new study. We will meet in Hanson Hall. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

5 LIVING WITH LOSS GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP a free six-week grief support group is meeting Thursday evenings, through April 26 th from 6:30-8:00pm at Hope Lutheran Church. (There will be no group session on Maundy Thursday, April 5 th ). The group is open to anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one and seeks understanding and support as they deal with feelings and changes brought on by their loss. 7 Confession of Sin Gracious God, we confess that we have sinned in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. Forgive us and give us strength to turn from sin and to serve you in newness of life. Amen. By water and the Holy Spirit, God gives us new birth, and through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, God forgives us all our sins. Almighty God strengthen us in all goodness and keep us in eternal life. Amen. Our Gathering Hymn, Your Heart O God is Grieved # 602, will be used throughout the Lenten season and is a trope of the Kyrie Eleison. (A trope is a musical setting of words from the bible, originally used for the chanting of the Torah.) It was written in Slovak in 1636 and had 9 stanzas or bids of the Kyrie. Today, our Kyrie typically has three bids. The hymn tune, ZNÁME TO PANE BOŽE NÁŠ, was written by Michael Kútzky who studied with the same teacher as for Franz Schubert and Anton Bruckner. During the day, he was a professor of math at Banská Bradlom and composed hymns on the side for the church, directed local choirs and edited hymnals in his spare time. The hymn first appeared in English hymnals in 1970 where it was reduced to three verses to match the length of our Kyrie and appeared in our old green Lutheran Book of Worship in As we sing this hymn throughout Lent a different cantor (Latin for the chief singer who leads a congregation in song) will bid the Kyrie each week. We will stop between the first and second verses for the confession. Only after we have confessed our sins will we continue with the gathering hymn and take our places on worship. This symbolism will emphasize the penitential nature of the season and focus on our atonement. Since the Kyrie is incorporated into the first hymn, it will be omitted during Lent. Traditionally the hymn of praise is also omitted during Lent.
