(Ezekiel 38:7) Get ready! Something big is about to happen. October 2017 will mark 500 years since Martin Luther started the Reformation with his 95 thesis. That means that this October will be year 499. As a lead up to the 500th anniversary, we at Shepherd of the Sea will be embarking on a celebration the scale of which has never been seen at this church before. This will be a celebration for not just a day or a week. It will not be a celebration for just a month or a season. No, we will be celebrating this milestone for an entire year (and beyond). Something like this comes around just once in a lifetime. Actually, it is even less than that. It only comes around once every 500 years. This is big! So what do we have in mind? Well, let me count some of the ways * We will be beginning a new faith formation class for adults and older youth that will exam ine aspects of the Reformation and how it affects us today. * We will be using special Reformation missalettes for the next year. * We will be trying some new liturgies and music, and maybe even sing some unfamiliar hymns. * There will be some special services and some additional Bible study opportunities. * Plus anything else I can think of in the next year! Some of these things will begin in September, others will begin in October, and still others will come later. The 500th anniversary provides a unique opportunity, as Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton has said, to live into our Lutheran identity. So get ready! Grace + Peace, Pastor Scott 1

2 CHURCH HAPPENINGS AND UPCOMING EVENTS Children s Choir We are starting a children s choir. It is for all children 5 th grade and under. We will have practice each Sunday morning from 9:00 to 9:15 am beginning on September 11. If you have any questions, see Alicia Haas. YOUTH SUNDAY Our youth will be delivering the sermon and helping with the liturgy on September 18. They are working hard on a very difficult gospel reading, so come out and support them! LET US KNOW WHAT IS GOING ON If you, or a loved one, or even a friend is hospitalized or deployed, please let the church office know so that we can pray or visit as needed. THE FELLOWSHIP HOUR Drop Off Month has been a great success. Thank you everyone who contributed cookies, cleaned coffee pots and tables or taken out trash. We will continue Drop Off every Sunday as long as there is cooperation and interest. If you would like to do a special coffee hours, please call Rosemary at ALTAR FLOWERS The order for the altar flowers will be placed the first of the month only! The sign up sheet for flowers is on the bulletin board. The cost is still $35.00 payable to the church. NEXT NEWSLETTER DEADLINE The deadline for the October SeaNotes submission is September 24 1t Please call the office at or to info@soselca.org to submit articles you wish to be included. NEW REFORMATION BIBLE STUDY You are invited to explore some of the theology and background of the Reformation and how it relates to us today. Class are scheduled to begin on September 25 at 9 am. This will be a discussion-focused class. People of all ages, middle school and up are invited to participate in this intergenerational study. CONFIRMATION CLASS Reminder that our next confirmation class will be held on September 11 after worship. Let s have a cookout! On September 24, Shepherd of the Sea will host a cookout at Swinson Park from around 11 am to 3 pm. We have invited our friends from St. Andrew s Episcopal to join us, as well as the Columbian refugee families. Join us for hamburgers, hotdogs, and fun. Bring a side dish to share! 3 Missions of Grace We are collecting old/used magazines for the Domestic Violence shelter. You can place your magazines in the basket in the Narthex. (The Dialysis Center is no longer accepting magazines). We are looking for volunteers to serve Holy Communion to our homebound members. If you interested in being a part of this wonderful ministry, contact Pastor Scott. Volunteers needed who would like to help serve a meal to the homeless at Hope Mission. MARTHA S BASKET TO FEED THE HUNGRY Save one family from hunger by donating food or cash during Martha s Mission Cupboard s annual Food-a-Thon. Needs: Canned vegetables and fruits, peanut butter, jams and jellies, cooking oil, cereal and crackers, diapers, toothbrushes and toothpaste, pasta and sauce, dressing mix, shampoo $15 buys 12 packages of hot dogs or 24 boxes of mac and cheese $20 buys a case of jelly or 15 dozen eggs $25 buys a case of peanut butter or applesauce $30 can feed one parent and one child for one week. SHOP TO STOP DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Shop to Stop Domestic Violence at Caroline s Collectibles Thrift Store at 3716 Arendell Street, Morehead City. As their website states, This is a no brainer. Save the planet, save some money, clean out your closets and help stop Domestic Violence at the same time. Proceeds help benefit the Carteret County Domestic Violence Program. TOILETRIES TO FIGHT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Please gather all those small hotel soaps, shampoos, toothbrushes and other toiletries you ve collected and donate them to the Carteret County Domestic Violence Program. You may place your donations in the box in the narthex marked Stop Domestic Violence. PRISON OUTREACH MINISTRY Did you know that our church sponsors a female prisoner in Raleigh? Her name is Loretta. We send her cards and letters to help brighten her day. We ve also sent her Inmate Packages (snack packages). If you would like to see some of her letters, check out the Prison Outreach notebook in the narthex. Homebound Members Keep our homebound members in your prayers.
