3 GREETINGS FROM THE PASTOR... From Pastor Jami Possinger I came across this quote by William Osler a few days ago: We are here to add what we can to life, not to get what we can from it. This quote has been walking with me ever since. And I began to wonder if I am adding to the world or simply taking what I can get from it. Which got me to thinking that you and I can make the world a brighter and richer place. The question is simple: Do we? Do we encourage others to be the best they can be without qualifying our encouragement based on our expectations? Do we give sincere compliments to others even for simple seemingly insignificant things? Do we do our best at our jobs so that we'll be good role models to others? Do we actually use our creative talents and take care of our bodies and our spirits? The truth is that the world can be a richer place if more people were to contribute in positive and not negative ways constructive not destructive ways ways that add positively to the world and our lives rather than take selfishly. It's very easy to do our jobs and get our paychecks and feel that we're doing enough that we ve made our contribution to society. This lifestyle I think diminishes us as the spiritual people that we are. We are only in our bodies for a limited amount of time in order to contribute to the world not to take from it to leave behind something good that comes from the fact that we walked this earth. So this day don't make yourself poorer than you have to be. Enrich yourself by spreading encouragement and love and compassion and compliments and anything else that you can think of that can make this world a brighter place. I leave you with this quote from Marianne Williamson: Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the Blessings, Pastor Jami world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. PASTOR BRIAN S PREPONDERANT BUSINESS On Wednesday April 4, 2017 the National Council of Churches held a rally in Washington DC to commemorate the 50 th anniversary of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. A small group from our congregation joined the Lehigh Valley Council of Churches bus trip down. We left at 4:00 AM and arrived at the National Mall around 8:30. The official rally began at 9:00 but there had been a worship service going on since 8:00. We heard prayers from a variety of faith traditions, and I specifically remember a Zoroastrian priest. We ended this portion with a Confession for the church s complicity in dealing with issues of racism. The emcee of the rally was an African American pastor from Chicago. Speakers discussed a variety of issues including systematic racism, police brutality, white privilege, and mass incarceration. Some notable speakers included the current pastor of MLK s church Rev. Raphael G. Warnock, actor Danny Glover, Black Lives Matter leader DeRay Mckesson, and Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield who gave a moving speech on white privilege. One powerful phrase from DeRay Mckesson sticks with me: that racism is able to adapt and manifest itself in different ways from to slavery to Jim Crow laws to present day mass incarceration. Others reminded us of what MLK called the Triple Evils of society: poverty, racism, and militarism, and called on the church to do more in confronting these evils.

4 I recall one African American pastor reminding us of Micah 6:8. She repeated that the church does a fine job of loving mercy but continually fails at doing justice. The church does well when it comes to comforting the afflicted, but not in seeking societal changes that end their affliction. It is not just our calling to calling to feed the poor, but to seek ways of ending poverty and hunger. It is not just our calling to visit the sick, but to seek ways of ensuring everyone has the healthcare they need. It is not just our calling to be nonviolent in our personal life, but also to stand against war and violence on the international level. It is not just our calling to be nice to people with different color skin, but also to educate ourselves on how the system favors certain groups and to work to make America a land of opportunity for everyone. Jesus was crucified because he taught of an alternative vision for the world, which He called the Kingdom of God. This vision was a threat to Roman imperial power and it is a threat to the status quo today. Jesus calls us to manifest the Kingdom and MLK preached of building the Beloved Community. And while the church does a fine job of loving mercy we can and must do better at doing justice if we are to achieve this vision. I left the rally feeling particularly drawn to educating myself and others about mass incarceration and doing my best to help deconstruct this current manifestation of systemic racism. I feel inspired and motivated, but at times impatient and frustrated. There are times when we might even want to give up because we feel there is so little one person can do. But this coming month, on Monday May 21, a group from Hope will be travelling to Harrisburg for LAMPa Day at the Capitol. I hope you will join us to learn more about how we can help change the world, and join the movement to ending the Triple Evils of poverty, racism, and militarism following our Christian calling to love mercy, do justice, and walk humbly with our God. CENTERING ON PRAYER with PASTOR BRIAN Centering Prayer will meet Wednesday May 2 nd at 2:00pm and Monday May 7 th at 6:00 PM. Page 4 WELLNESS TEAM Fibromyalgia Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep, memory and mood issues. Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals. Symptoms sometimes begin after a physical trauma, surgery, infection or significant psychological stress. In other cases, symptoms gradually accumulate over time with no triggering event. Women are more likely to develop fibromyalgia than are men. Many people who have fibromyalgia also have tension headaches, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, irritable bowel syndrome, anxiety and depression. While there is no cure for fibromyalgia, a variety of medications can help control symptoms. Exercise, relaxation and stress-reduction measures also may help. Please check the May bulletin board for more information. BLOOD DRIVE The next Miller Keystone Blood Drive will be held Sunday, July 15, 2018 in Kuntz Hall.
