Tuesday, December 4 Noon Pleasant Memories Join us for a meal catered by Jimmy Cox ($9.00) and enjoy a fun Christmas Carol sing after lunch. Since the men s group will not meet in December, they are especially invited to join, but everyone is welcome. Signup sheet on the bulletin board to help with lunch planning. Wednesday, December 5 6:30 Mid-week Advent Worship Pastor Deb will lead a brief Bible study on the theme of While We Wait-Living Questions of Advent. Plan to take a few minutes out of your week to prepare your heart for the coming of the Lord. After worship, all are invited to a covered dish lunch in the social hall to celebrate together. Wednesday, December 19 6:30 Mid-week Advent Worship This is the final week of our 3 part Advent Bible study, led by Pastor Deb. Sunday, December 23 11:00 The fourth Sunday in Advent Pastor Deb will lead worship and we light the fourth Advent candle. Monday, December 24 9:00 The Nativity of our Lord Join us on Christmas Eve for a joyous service of music, word, and sacrament. The ideas on the calendar are chosen in relationship to the four keys for Roots and Wings: caring conversation, rituals and traditions, devotional practices, and services. For example: Dec. 6 is St. Nicholas Day; Dec. 7 is Letter Writing Day; Dec. 10 is Last Night of Hanukkah; Dec. 11 is Free a Shelter Animal Day; Dec. 12 is Poinsettia Day; Dec. 18 is Bake Cookies Day. Check out the calendar for other ways to celebrate the remaining days of December. Roots and Wings is a ministry of the Virginia Synod, ELCA. Copies of the monthly calendar and weekly lessons are in the Narthex. Copies are also available for download and sharing at the following website: Children and Youth The Nursery Gathering Room has been equipped with a combo TV/DVD. Also, a bookcase with Bible Story books and Christian DVDs has been added. Thanks to all for the donations to update this room for our children and youth. If you have age-appropriate books or DVDs that you would like to contribute, please bring to Rosemary Spell or Robyn Dean. January 6 Social following with Play: Who will find the "king" in the King Cake? After the January 6 play, the Council will host light refreshments in the Social Hall. A king cake is a type of cake associated with the festival of Epiphany at the end of the Christmas season. The cake has a small plastic baby (to represent the Baby Jesus) inside or underneath; and the person who gets the piece of cake with the trinket has various privileges and obligations (to be determined). Tradition holds that the cake is "to draw the kings" to the Epiphany. Please plan to attend.

4 WELCA NEWS The Pleasant View WELCA met at church on Tuesday, November 13. Rosemary Spell presented a program on the WELCA Thank Offering. The WELCA Thank Offering began in the 1800 s and is used for church, community and world ministries. She passed out information on the WELCA mission and purpose (if you would like one of these, see Rosemary). She also noted that the Presbyterian and Methodist churches also have a Thank Offering Ministry. Our goal for next year is to have members of Pleasant View/WELCA have a thankful box or basket and daily put in your change/dollars for what you are thankful for and then turn this in as your Thank Offering in November Rosemary read Psalm 104 and concluded her program with prayer. Offering: Today we collected $105 for Thank Offering (with more to come in) and $25 in regular offering. Thank You Notes: were read from Western State Hospital, for $30 we donated to their Christmas Fund and from the University of Virginia Hospital for baby layettes made by members and donated to the infants there. Military Members: WELCA members will gather items to be sent to Alex Rankin, who is deployed overseas, for Christmas. These will be mailed the last week of November. Church members who wish, may send Christmas Cards along with this Christmas package. We are sending a $25 gift card to Chapman Toman who is stationed at Ft. Meade in Maryland Augusta Health and Rehab Christmas Project.: We will be collecting the following personal care items to be distributed to residents at AHRC for Christmas: (lotions, chapstick, dry shampoo, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner, body wash, tooth brushes, mouth wash, toothpaste, dental floss, Vaseline, socks, throw blankets, wet ones, hand sanitizer, word search books, crosswords, calendars, books, highlighters, coloring books, crayon, powder, bobby pins, nail polish, after shave,and stuffed animals) There will be collection boxes in the narthex and back hall for church members who wish to participate in this project. Last date to collect these items is Sunday, December 9. Project: We discussed several service projects for next year but have not decided on a specific one yet. This will be discussed at our planning meeting. Shut-In List/Cards: Goldie passed out a new shut-in list. Thanksgiving cards were signed and will be sent to: Frances Leach, Linda and Dick Zullig, Malcolm and Jean Link, Gladys Fockler and Joe Price and a get well card for Betty Cox. WELCA Next Meeting: For our December meeting we will be visiting the shut-ins. Our January planning meeting will be Tuesday, January 8, This will be a sandwich luncheon.
