2 Page Two September 5, 2010 WAS AS ST. P Our second reading is taken from St. Paul s letter to some really obscure fellow, Philemon. In the Roman Empire of St. Paul s day the peculiar institution of slavery was perfectly legal, just like it was in the southernu.s. prior to January 1, 1863 (Emancipation Proclamation). The apostle was not a cotton growing southern plantation owner kind of a guy. And he never owned slaves. But he was a Roman citizen who well understood the law. A slave by the name of Onesimus escaped from his master, Philemon, and fled to St. Paul for protection. The apostle must have been eager to rescue the runaway. He realized, however, that something of higher value than the freedom of one man was at stake. St. Paul wanted Philemon to act as a true and faithful disciple of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. St. Paul was a real resourceful fellow. He could have easily hidden Onesimus or even demanded in the name of the Christ that Philemon grant him freedom. Instead the apostle sent the slave back to the master with a letter, part of which we heard today. The point of the letter is that St. Paul did not want to force virtue upon Philemon. The one friend wanted the other friend give up the slave on his own, which meant surrendering valuable property. It was a tough challenge. So St. Paul concluded the passage this way: If you regard me as a partner, welcome him as you would me. How did Philemon respond? What was the fate of Onesimus? Sorry. St. Paul didn t say. What we do know is that as disciples of the Christ are called upon to be generous in our response, not to the live according to the minimum or to look for excuses for not being the kind of Catholics we should be. In the Gospel Our Lord gives us a warning by using the examples of building a tower and going to battle. The idea is that we have to be prepared for generous discipleship. Whoever does not carry his cross and come after me cannot be my disciple. Our FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR. PAUL PRO-UNION OR PRO-CONFEDERATE? cross may be giving up our slavery to alcohol, drugs, or tobacco. Our cross may be to overcome gossip or to forgive someone who has injured us. God does not force us to be virtuous any more than St. Paul forced Philemon to give up his slave. Even when something negative happens to us, God the Father does not compel us to accept it as a cross. We have to make the effort to turn something bad into something good by joining our sufferings to God the Son. In every Mass we remember the death and resurrection of Jesus in such a way that through the Holy Eucharist His sacrifice is a reality before us on the altar. When we hear the words, This is my Body, which will be given up for you, we should in our hearts say to God the Father, Yes, this is my body too and with your Son I offer myself to you. And when we hear the words, This is the cup of my Blood, we should say, And this is my blood too which I wish to shed out of love for you, if such is your will. We can recall the story of St. Paul, Philemon, and Onesimus. We too must be faithful followers of Jesus. Pray And Play Tomorrow, Monday, September 5, is a national holiday, Labor Day, a day off from work for most. For those who are going out of town have fun and do drive safely. For those who are staying at home we invite you to celebrate the 10:00am Mass with us in church; and then after Mass we invite you to join us in the hall and in the grove behind the hall for our annual parish picnic. Even if you didn t sign the list, come on over and bring the whole family. Bring a pasta dish or salad or meat or dessert. The grilled meat is compliments of the men of the Holy Name Society. As usual there will be the jumping toy, games, and prizes for the kids with a horseshoe toss, Bingo, and prizes for the adults. Labor Day is kind of like a contradiction in terms. The collection for St. James on the weekend of August 29th was $3, The number of August 29th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of August 28th and 29th was 153 The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $2, which averages out to $19.20 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 153 contributing families. BLESS YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED AND VALUED SUPPORT. ST. JAMES ALTAR & ROSARY SODALITY MEMBERSHIP DRIVE Join other women of our parish praying the rosary especially during the months of May and October. Each year the women get together and visit a local shrine or a unique religious site of significance. Sign up next Saturday and Sunday, September 11th & 12th before or after each Mass. Membership costs only $10.00 per year. Members must be parishioners who wish to pray the Rosary together. Tomorrow, September 6, is Labor Day. Most of you will be off of work and school. Most of you will be in town. We hope that most of you can join us for our Labor Day celebration beginning with Mass at 10:00am to be followed shortly by the parish picnic using Sag Hall and the grove behind the hall, with the picnic running from about 11:30am until about 2:30pm. We will have the picnic even if it rains. We are going to get rid of the old tents and get a big new tent. The sign up sheets are on the usher s table on the St. Joseph side. Let us know how many members of the family will be attending and what dish you will bring if you care to do so. The Holy Name will supply and grill the meat and provide the refreshments. This is a family picnic for people of all ages. So there will be a jumping toy and piñatas for kids, bingo and the horseshoe toss for adults. Bring all of the family members and friends that you want. You don t have to be a parishioner to attend. DOMINICK S AND THE OUR LADY OF ANGELS MISSION It costs you nothing. Dominick's gives back up to 4% per cent of the money you spend ANYWAY! Simply fill out the forms provided in church and return them to the St. James rectory. That is all you do. They do all the rest. Our Lady of the Angels will register your information with Dominick s. HOSPITALITY SUNDAY AND CAKE RAFFLE Next Sunday, September 12th after all Sunday Masses the members of the Altar & Rosary are having their annual Cake Raffle. PLUS they will be serving cake, cookies, and coffee or tea in the St. James Café. Good will donations are always welcome.

Catholic Men of SW Suburban Chicago will meet at Our Lady of the Woods parish in Orland Park on Thursday, September 9 th for OPER- ERATION FORMATION an evening of faith formation. This event is organized by Regnum Christi Men of Chicagoland and open to all Catholic men. The evening will include directed meditation, Mass and time for networking plus a special guest speaker, Douglas M. Delaney of Lockport, Executive Assistant to the Bishop of Joliet, J. Peter Sartain. The Praesidium Vitae award will be presented to Mother Agnes Mary Donovan of the Sisters of Life. Aid for Women reaches out to women who may be considering abortion and offers them the support they need, both material and emotional, to choose life. To register or receive more information, call or visit ANNUAL BANQUET BENEFITING BISHOP ABRAMOWICZ SEMINARY TO BE HELD ON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 12 Francis Cardinal George, OMI, Archbishop of Chicago, and the Auxiliary Bishops of Chicago, will be in attendance at the annual benefit dinner for the Archdiocese of Chicago s Bishop Abramowicz Seminary, on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers, 301 East North Water St. in Chicago. There will be a silent auction and cocktails at 5pm followed by dinner at 6pm. The Bishop Abramowicz Seminary Program has annually recruited seminarians in Poland since September With the approval of their respective bishops, these seminarians freely elect to leave their native Poland and complete their seminary training at Bishop Abramowicz Seminary in Chicago and then at the University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary. After ordination, these priests serve in parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Chicago, including those that have a significant number of Polish parishioners as well as parishes that serve other cultures.
