2 Page Two June 17, 2012 In this Gospel Jesus expressed a truth which we all recognize, at least upon reflection. After seed is planted in the ground, it develops into a full grown crop. With some water, some sunshine, and a little patience the growth takes place. How that can happen we do not know. It is yet another mystery. Even more mysterious is the fact than when a shrub is pruned, when some of its branches are cut away, it actually becomes more vigorous and productive. Go figure. There are mysteries in nature which can be described but not explained. Like for instance, it is easy to say that what goes up must come down, but we don t know why gravity works, only that it does. Why should all bodies be drawn to the center of the earth and not moved away from it? Beats me. No one really understands this. The Lord s intention was not to teach an agricultural lesson about seeds, but to get us to think about a deeper mystery, the mystery of the reign of God in the Church. The reign of God is like a mustard seed which can grow into the largest of shrubs. The Church began as a small group of disciples in Jerusalem. From there it spread north to Antioch in Syria, and then across the Mediterranean to Rome, throughout Europe, and eventually to the whole world. How all of this could have possibly happened is even more of a mystery than the growth of a wee bit of a seed into the largest of shrubs. No mystery should get the best of us. A mystery is not a truth about which we can know nothing. A mystery is a truth about which we cannot know everything. Something that we can know about the mystery which is the Church is that God the Holy Spirit is at work. This work of the Holy Spirit in the Church FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR MYSTERIOUS SEEDS should not surprise us. Jesus Himself was conceived in Mary s womb by the power of the Holy Spirit. During Eucharistic Prayer II we ask God the Father: Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit formed the Christ in the womb of Mary. He continues to form Christ in the Eucharist as well as in the Church, this Church which is universal and which we call catholic because it reaches out to embrace every human person. The Holy Spirit is like the force of gravity, drawing all people to the center which is Christ. To be a Catholic is to think big, to realize that we are part of a Church which reaches back through the centuries to Christ Himself and which now circles the globe and is found in every place. The Church, though universal, is not perfect, we must admit. Weaknesses and mistakes, whether our own or those of others in the Church, should never discourage us. Just as a shrub occasionally needs pruning for health and growth, so the Church needs repentance and renewal which are also the work of the Holy Spirit. Hip, hip, hurrah, Church! The collection for St. James on the weekend of June 10, 2012 was $4, The number of June 10th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of June 9th and June 10th was 149. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $3, which averages out to $23.34 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 149 contributing families. BLESS YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED AND VALUED SUPPORT.
