2 Page Two May 15, 2005 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR PENTECOST SUNDAY IS THE BIRTHDAY OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH After Jesus the Christ ascended into heaven, His disciples were alone, isolated, and a bit confused. They were not quite sure what they should be up to. Without the physical presence of the Lord they were leaderless. They were no longer certain what being a disciple meant. Were they, in fact, suppose to be yet another Jewish special interest group like the Pharisees, the Saducees, the Zealots, or the Essenes? Without God the Son to instruct them on a regular basis the disciples needed God the Holy Spirit to enlighten them. On the day of Pentecost the remaining apostles remembered the parting words of Jesus to them: You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; then you are to be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, yes, even to the ends of the earth. The words helped to clarify the situation. Soon the words became the reality. When the time for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place together. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the entire house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. It was the ultimate clarification of priestly ministry. So the followers of the Ascended Christ were to move beyond Judea into Gentile territory, like into Antioch of Syria. It was there that the disciples were called Christians for the first time. Only after much discussion, debate, and at times very heated arguments did the Christians come to see that Our Lord had founded a Church for all people of all times and all places. Then St. Ignatius, the Bishop of Antioch, around the year 100AD used the term Catholic for the first time to refer to his Christian community. The word, of course, means in Greek Universal. It is most appropriate for the Church of Jesus Christ, and the name eventually became permanent and official. We Catholics now express our belief in the one, Catholic, and apostolic Church. Catholic we must be not only in name but also in fact. The Church is not Irish or Polish or Italian or Lithuanian or Slovenian or Mexican. And the Church is certainly not American. It is universal today just like it was universal in the first century. We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea, and Cappodocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God. As the First Vatican Council was assembling in 1869 the bishops were reporting for duty from all over the world. But the vast majority were Europeans, especially Italians. Even the American bishops were mostly Europeans, especially Irishmen. Only a relatively short time later, in 1963, the bishops began to check in for the Second Vatican Council. However, there were dramatic changes in the ethnic composition of the bishops. Between 1869 and 1963 the Church, guided by the Holy Spirit, had become a lot more universal with a bunch of bishops from Asia, Africa, and South America. Paradoxically the Church to be fully Catholic must be freed from a single culture in order to embrace all cultures. The change from Latin with its European roots to the many languages of the world was a way to get all people to a more active participation in the Mass. When the College of Cardinals arrived at the Vatican to elect a new Pope in April 2005, we saw faces representing the entire globe. And all of the American Cardinals are men born in the United States. In celebrating the liturgical observance of the Feast of Pentecost, we give thanks and praise to God the Holy Spirit for calling us into a Church that is one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic. God Bless Our Parish, FATHER ED GLEESON, PASTOR

4 Page Four May 15, 2005 ST. PASCAL BAYLON FEASTDAY: MAY 17 Pascal was the son of pious peasants Martin Baylon and Isabella Jubera. He was born in 1540 at Torre Hermosa in the kingdom of Aragon, in Spain. In his early life, Paschal labored as a shepherd for his father from age 7 to 24, and was a good influence on an often-rowdy group. Right from boyhood he clearly showed the piety of his soul with an intense love for prayer and a particular devotion towards the Eucharist, which later characterized the whole of his religious life. He performed miracles, and was distinguished for his austerity. He also taught himself to read. Receiving a vision, which told him to enter a nearby Franciscan community, he became a Franciscan lay brother of the Alcantrine reform in 1564, and spent most of his life as a humble doorkeeper. His charity to the poor and afflicted, his unfailing courtesy and humility were remarkable even by Franciscan standards. His devout love for Jesus Christ in the Eucharistic was expressed in a particular way by frequent visits to the Blessed Sacrament in all the churches he could reach on foot and carrying a "book of sayings" dealing with the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. While traveling in France, he defended the Real Presence against the blasphemies of a Calvanist preacher, and narrowly escaped death at the hands of a Huguenot mob. The "seraph of the Eucharist", as he was commonly called, Pascal died May 17, on Pentecost Sunday, in His tomb (in the Royal Chapel in Villa Reale, Valencia, Spain) immediately became the object of innumerable pilgrimages, even by the King and the Nobles of Spain. His cult, because of his miracles during his life and after his death, spread rapidly throughout Spain, Austria and the Kingdom of Naples, and finally throughout the whole of Europe and America. Beatified by Paul V in 1618, he was canonized by Alexander VIII on October 16, Pope Leo XIII, in the Apostolic Brief "Providentissimus Deus" of November 28, 1897, proclaimed Saint Paschal Baylon Patron of Eucharistic Congresses and all Eucharistic Associations whether presently existing or which will exist at a future date. Year of the Eucharist THINGS TO DO DURING EUCHARISTIC ADORATION: 1. Recite the Jesus Prayer. Say Lord Jesus, have mercy on me a sinner, repeatedly as you quiet your heart and mind. 2. Meditate using Scripture. Choose a passage from the Bible. Read the word and ask God to let the passage speak to you. Pay special attention to anything that strikes you and ask God what He wishes for you to draw from that passage. 3. Pour out your heart to Christ and adore Him. Speak to Jesus, aware that you are in His presence, and tell Him all that comes to your mind. Listen for His response. Pray the prayer that St. Francis instructed his brothers to pray whenever they were before the Blessed Sacrament: I adore you, O Christ, present here and in all the churches of the world, for by your holy cross You have redeemed the world. 4. Ask forgiveness and intercede for others. Think of those who have hurt you and request a special blessing for them. Ask God to forgive you for all the times you have neglected or hurt someone else. Bring before the Blessed Sacrament all those who have asked you to pray for them. Ask the Lord to address their concerns. 5. Pray the Rosary. Ask Mary to join you as you gaze on Christ in the Eucharist and as you pray the Rosary. 6. Read the life of a saint and pray with him or her. Read aloud about them and pray their prayers before the Blessed Sacrament. 7. Sit quietly and just be in the presence of God. Instead of talking to the Lord, try listening to what He wants to tell you. Enjoy being in His presence.
