2 Page Two Aug 7, 2011 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR ST. P Water covers about two-thirds of the earth s surface. We cannot live without it. It quenches our thirst and cleanses us. Sometimes, however, we cannot live with water. It is a powerful and mysterious force that can mean death as well as life, especially during times of flooding. The apostles understood water. As fishermen they made their living from it. Water usually meant life. But in this Gospel, with the wind howling above them and with the sea roaring beneath their boat, the disciples knew that water could mean death. And then something truly amazing happened. Through the storm they saw Jesus walking toward them safely on the lake! Naturally the aggressive St. Peter wanted to participate in the excitement of it all. Tell me to come to you on the water, he demanded. Peter got his wish as Jesus responded: come. According to the testimony of St. Matthew, the tax collector, Peter s big adventure proved to be a big mistake. Peter got out of the boat and began to walk toward Jesus. But when he saw how strong the wind was he became frightened; and beginning to sink, he cried out: Lord, save me. Immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and caught Peter and said to him: O you of little faith, why did you doubt? The same lesson applies to all of us Catholics. A lack of faith can sink us all. The Old Testament prophet, Elijah, had already experienced that lesson the hard way on the Mount of Horeb. A strong wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake there was fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the. PETER S SWIMMING LESSON cave. The prophet had just witnessed the mighty power of the one true God who, in response to his prayer, had brought down fire from heaven to consume a young bull as a sacrifice. This was after Queen Jezebel s prayer to her pagan gods had proved useless. The queen was really upset with the prophet s success so she vowed to kill him. That s why Elijah hid in a cave. There he expected another fantastic sign from God. Instead there was that same soft whisper. Elijah had learned to be content with the way that God had chosen to act. We may want God to act on our behalf in some dramatic way, to allow us, so to speak, to walk to Him across water. But we are to remain in the unsinkable boat that is the Catholic Church. No matter what the approach that those outside of the Church may take, we know that God can always be found in the boat that is the Church. Within the Church God acts in his own way. We no doubt would be thrilled to see our Creator in some brilliant flash of light like the fire that consumed the holocaust offering by Elijah. But the Father s way is simply like that of a tiny whisper. The Lord chooses to speak to us, not in the roar of a strong wind, but in the ordinary sounds of human words through the Sacred Scriptures. The Son chooses to come to us, not in the rumbling of a terrifying earthquake, but under the simple appearances of the bread and wine offered at every Mass. In every circumstance, throughout every need of life, we find Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In order to avoid sinking like St. Peter almost did, we must remain in the boat. We must be faithful apostles in the boat that is the one, holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church. GOD BLESS OUR PARISH, FR. ED GLEESON, PASTOR

3 Nineteenth Ordinary Sunday Page Three The two large altar flower bouquets adorning the main altar were made available by the generosity of JANE HOPSON. The collection for St. James on the weekend of July 31st was $3, The number of July 31st Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of July 30th and July 31st was 141. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $3, which averages out to $23.27 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 141 contributing families. BLESS YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED AND VALUED SUPPORT. St. James Labor Day Picnic Anyone who has prizes to donate to our annual Labor Day Picnic, Bingo Game, please bring them to the rectory or to Pam Stafford up in the choir loft before mass. 6 Page Six Aug 7, 2011 PICNIC TIME AT THE PARISH BACK-TO TO-SCHOOL PICNIC LABOR DAY PICNIC The first of our two annual picnics will take place this coming Wednesday, August 10, from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. Most parishes have boring ugly looking campuses with little useable outdoor space. But not us. The picnics always take place right here on our own property. Wednesday s picnic has the back-to-school theme. And it will be located in the St. James Café and the garage area behind the rectory. School age kids are all invited along with their parents and friends. This group includes High School, Grade School, and Pre-School students. The High Schoolers can supervise the games, while the little kids run around wild, which is all they want to do anyhow. Some of the old fellows from the Holy Name (Flame) Society will be here grilling dogs and burgers. Refreshments, salads, and deserts will be available. Parents are requested to add other dishes. There will be a jumping toy and piñatas filled with candy. The children will be hitting the piñatas with blunt instruments such as baseball bats, while being encouraged not to hit each other with them. A good time will be had by all, including the screaming babies. On Labor Day, Monday, September 5th, Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. instead of at 8:15 A.M. Following the Mass the annual parish picnic will be held in Sag Hall and the picnic grove behind Sag Hall. The times will be about from 11:00 A.M. until about 2:30 P.M. All of the same good stuff from the back-to-school picnic will return for the parish picnic, that is, the jumping toy, the piñatas, the Holy Name grill, the meat, the refreshments, and the kids of all ages. The families are requested to bring salads and desserts. Added attractions will be activities for adults, the horseshoe toss outside and the Bingo inside. We could still use some El-Cheapo donations for the Bingo prizes. If you are going to be in town, come on over and bring your brother-in-law and other freeloaders. Remember that all of our picnics are free. A good time will be had by all, including the elderly pastor who will make his annual visit inside the jumping toy. Let the good times roll, Fr.
