2 Page Two June 28, 2015 From the Desk of the Pastor Freedom & Truth To highlight the 14 days leading up to the 4 th of July, which has been dubbed A Fortnight of Freedom here are some out takes of a great talk given by Archbishop Charles Chaput, OFM Cap. Pope Paul VI, saw Dignitatis Humanae, (from the Second Vatican Council) as one of the most important actions of the Council. It changed the way the Church interacts with states. And it very much improved the Church s relations with other Christians and religious believers.... It s important to start by recalling the nature of the world that the Church was born into. One of the themes of the 18 th century Enlightenment was a kind of anything but Jesus attack on religious superstition, and a special distaste for the legacy of the Catholic Church. Early Christians it must be seen, weren't killed because they believed in God. They were killed because they didn't believe in the authentic gods of the city and empire... Why does this matter? The reason is simple. T.S. Eliot liked to argue that no culture has appeared or developed except together with a religion. Nor can a culture survive for long without one. Christianity shaped an entirely new understanding of sacred and secular authority. Christians prayed for the emperor and the empire. But they would not worship the empire's gods... As the Roman world gradually became Christian, the Church gained her freedom. Religious and secular authority began to mix, and since power is just as easily abused by clergy as it is by laypeople the goodness of such a marriage began to fade. That s the history Vatican II sought to correct by going back to the sources of Christian thought. The choice to believe any religious faith must be voluntary. Faith must be an act of free will, or it can t be valid. Parents make the choice for their children at baptism because they have parental authority. But in the end, people who don t believe can t be forced to believe, especially by the state. Forced belief violates the person, the truth and the wider community of faith. So religious freedom with the freedom of conscience, along with the right to life are the most important rights any human being has. Dignitatis Humanae is not just about freedom from coercion. It s also about freedom for the truth. The issue of truth is too easily overlooked. The declaration took four drafts to complete. And it created a great deal of internal debate. Karol Wojtyla took part in Vatican II as a young bishop. He supported Dignitatis Humanae and became a great defender of religious freedom. But he resisted an early draft of the declaration precisely because it failed to make a strong connection between freedom and truth. (Fr. commentary: Love of freedom without a passionate love of truth is like love of state s rights without an equal love of human rights. Defending human rights without defending a true definition of the human person is like defending your own right to do what you please. America, what a gift to the world! OMAHA ARCHDIOCESAN PHASE FOR FLANAGAN CAUSE ENDS; DOCUMENTS GO TO ROME: OMAHA, Neb. (CNS) -- About 800 people witnessed history June 18 as the Archdiocese of Omaha advanced to Rome the sainthood cause for Father Edward Flanagan, Boys Town founder. Archbishop George J. Lucas was the main celebrant of a morning Mass at St. Cecilia Cathedral in Omaha that marked the closing of the archdiocesan phase of the canonization effort with a special ceremony to encase and officially seal four boxes -- 4,600 pages -- of documents detailing the archdiocese's three-year investigation. The documents will be shipped to the Congregation for Saints' Causes at the Vatican. If the findings are accepted, recognizing Father Flanagan's heroic virtues, he will be declared "venerable." In general, two approved miracles attributed to the intercession of the candidate are needed for sainthood -- one for beatification and the second for canonization. The ceremony was a once-in-alifetime event, a first for the archdiocese, to have one of its members -- an archdiocesan priest -- advance toward possible beatification and canonization, said Omar Gutierrez, notary for the archdiocesan tribunal for the cause. Among those concelebrating the Mass were Bishop Kevin Doran of Elphin, Ireland, Father Flanagan's native diocese, and Father Patrick O'Toole, pastor of the parish in which Father Flanagan grew up in Ballymoe, Ireland. POPE SAYS SCRIPTURE MUST HAVE CENTRAL PLACE IN CHURCH'S PASTORAL LIFE: VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- A lack of enthusiasm for Scripture weakens wellestablished churches and stunts the missionary verve of newfound Christian communities, said Pope Francis in a written message shared with members of the Catholic Biblical Federation. Meeting federation members -- including representatives of bishops' conferences and some 200 Catholic biblical institutions -- Pope Francis spoke spontaneously, but gave them a copy of his prepared text in which he noted the importance of Scripture. The audience June 19 came during the federation's plenary assembly June in Nemi, outside of Rome. "The lack of support and vigor for the Word leads to the weakening of Christian communities of ancient tradition and halts the spiritual growth and missionary fervor of young churches," the pope wrote. Therefore, he said, there must be a pastoral commitment to make Scripture central to church life, and an "encounter with Jesus" through Scripture must be part of the habitual activities of all religious communities, parishes and movements, RELIGIOUS LEADERS DECRY ARSON AT CHURCH OF MULTI- PLICATION IN HOLY LAND: JERUSALEM (CNS) -- The Council of Religious Institutions of the Holy Land issued a strong condemnation against an early morning arson attack on the Benedictine Church of the Multiplication at Tabgha on the Sea of Galilee on June 18. The CRIHL, which is made up of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel, the Heads of the Local Churches of the Holy Land and the Ministry of Islamic Waqf of the Palestinian Authority, said they were outraged by the arson and vandalism. "Since December 2009, about 43 churches and mosques were torched or desecrated, yet not a single person has been prosecuted by the authorities," a CRIHL statement said. It called on authorities to "bring the perpetrators to justice, prevent such attacks and restore safety and respect for holy sites of all religions." Firefighters were called at 3:30 a.m. to extinguish the fire, which destroyed the roof and damaged a storage room, church offices and a prayer room. Wadie Abunasser, a church spokesman, said the blaze caused millions of dollars in damage. Graffiti scrawled in red paint in Hebrew also was found at the site. It read, "False idols will be smashed," which is part of the "Aleinu," a prayer said three times a day by religious Jews. An elderly Benedictine monk and a young volunteer were treated for light smoke inhalation injuries, according to the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem. The Bishops Speak: In their statement Catholics in Political Life (June 2004), the United States bishops said the following: We need to continue to teach clearly and help other Catholic leaders to teach clearly on our unequivocal commitment to the legal protection of human life from the moment of conception until natural death. Our teaching on human life and dignity should be reflected in our parishes and our educational, health care and human service ministries. We need to do more to persuade all people that human life is precious and human dignity must be defended. This requires more effective dialogue and engagement with all public officials, especially Catholic public officials. We welcome conversation initiated by political leaders themselves.
