2 Page Two January From the Desk of our Guest Columnist Hail Mary, full of grace... I cannot begin to estimate how many times I have repeated those words by rote -- without even thinking about what I was saying. It was probably the same number of times that I didn t remember or realize that these were the first words spoken by the Angel Gabriel as he greeted our Blessed Mother at the Annunciation. All of that changed when I started praying the Rosary daily. So, do you think you know the Hail Mary? Do you know how many sentences are in it? Do you know how many words are in the Hail Mary? Those are two of the easy questions, although the answer to the first question can vary. Sometimes the Hail Mary is broken into three sentences starting with Hail Mary, Blessed art thou and Holy Mary -- while other times the Hail Mary is printed as one long sentence. The number of words that are in the Hail Mary total forty-two, counting Amen. Why do Catholics pray the Hail Mary? I m not a theologian, but it would appear that the purpose of the prayer is to praise Mary, which is implied by the prayer s name. Do you know how many times we reference Mary in this prayer? There are three direct references by name -- Hail Mary, Holy Mary, and Mother of God. But there are also three indirect references for a total of six, if you include the Lord is with thee, Blessed art thou and the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. So, why else do we pray the Hail Mary? We pray the Hail Mary to seek Mary s intercessory prayers. We ask Mary to pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. It is almost as if the first part of the Hail Mary is prayed in order to get her attention, so that we may ask for the favor of her prayers -- at this moment and at the moment we are dying. One day I was praying the Rosary and it came to me like a bolt of lightning, an epiphany that changed the entire way that I pray and view the Hail Mary. I realized that while the Hail Mary appears to focus on the Mother of God, it has even more references to her Son, than it does to Mary. There are two times in the Hail Mary that Jesus is directly referenced by name if you count, the Lord is with thee. But there are seven indirect references to Jesus! After all, we wouldn t be addressing her as Hail Mary if Mary weren't connected to Jesus in the first place. Nor would we be saying that she is full of grace. We are indirectly referring to Jesus when we recite Blessed art thou among women and and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. Even in the last words of the prayer, when we say Holy Mary, Mother of God, we can t help but realize that the Hail Mary is really about Jesus, for if it wasn t for Mary s connection to Jesus, none of these references would apply. Within moments of this initial epiphany, I had another revelation. I knew that I must share immediately what I learned with a Christian friend of mine who has been vocally critical of Catholics praying the Hail Mary. It was as if I was being given an order from above to spread the word and now, perhaps, it s your turn? Praying the Hail Mary and the Rosary is about praying to and being led to Jesus, as Saint Pope John Paul II continually taught us. The next time you pray the Hail Mary, think of each one of the words and phrases, their sequence, origin, and meaning. Think, too, of Jesus, and you may never pray the Hail Mary the same way again.
