2 Page Two March 18, 2012 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR THANKS,, YOUY GUYS,, FORF ALL OF THOSE BIRTHDAY FLOWERS! However, flowers which bloom early this spring will have died long before summer arrives. Newly born infants who brighten the lives of loving parents will themselves grow old and follow those parents into the darkness of the grave. In the future the sun, which is our furnace, will exhaust its energy and the earth will endure a frozen death. As a matter of fact the entire universe is finite, limited in the resources which are needed for continued existence. Even as this old country curate writes this article the universe is slowly but surely passing away. None of this is quite as pessimistic as it sounds as we Catholics have been given the gift of Hope. Along with Faith Hope is like a bright light shining on the awesome truth within God s plan. According to God s plan death leads to life. This same plan applies to all of us. In the third Eucharistic Acclamation we proclaim: Save us, Savior of the world, for by your cross and resurrection you have set us free. In this Gospel Jesus said to Nicodemus: Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in Him may have eternal life. Then St. John explained what the Lord had meant. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life. Jesus the Christ declared that He must be lifted up. It was His way of referring to His Crucifixion. The manner of His death was the kind inflicted on hardened criminals. The lives of the executed always ends in tragedy. And so the cross seemed to indicate a defeat, not a victory. Faith, however, tells us something totally different. The only crime that Jesus had committed was not a crime at all. He robbed death of its power. The cross was neither a tragedy nor a defeat but a glorious triumph. In that triumph we already share since God the Father in His great love has brought to us a life in God the Son when we were dead in sin. He has also reserved for us a place in His Heavenly Home so that in the ages to come He might display the great wealth of His favor toward us. This is precisely the truth that St. Paul told the Ephesians about in the second reading of this Mass. Brothers and sisters: God who is rich in mercy, because of the great love He had for us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, brought us to life with Christ. By His grace you have been saved and raised up with Him, and seated with Him in the heavens in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the immeasurable riches of His grace in His kindness to us in Christ Jesus. Lent gives all of us Catholics the opportunity to rise from the death of sin to the life of grace. We can accomplish this through prayer, fasting, and alms giving. Especially we can accomplish this through the Sacrament of Penance. Confessions are heard by this feeble Father here every Saturday afternoon from 4:30 to 5:15 p.m. During our annual parish mission Confessions will be heard by Father Bob Lombardo and myself on the Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of Holyweek, April 2, 3, and 4 at 8:00 p.m. Now is the right time for us to rise from our sinful graves. 3 Fourth Sunday of Lent Page Three The two large altar flower bouquets adorning the altar were made in honor of Abigail Veiticus birthday and in memory of Adalbert George Stach. The collection for St. James on the weekend of March 11, 2012 was $4, The number of March 11th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of March 10th and March 11th was 156. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $3, which averages out to $23.21 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 156 contributing families.
