2 Page Two May 13, 2012 Before Jesus the Christ walked the face of the earth almost all people had some kind of religion. Some national groups believed in only one god like the Chosen People. But that was kind of rare. Most ancient people believed in more than one god. Atheism was unheard of. Paganism was rampant. In fact, the Greeks and the Romans had a whole bunch of gods. But no matter how many gods they believed in, ancient people thought of their deities as belonging to them only, limited to their nation or to their tribe or to their extended family. The god on the other side of the swamp belonged to a different group. And most certainly ancient folks did not want to share any of their gods with neighbors, regardless of whether they be friend or foe. They could never conceive of a god who could shepard two separate flocks at the same time. The belief that there was only one personal God for the entire world was foreign to them. The apostles of Jesus, all of whom were Jewish, also had a hard time accepting the idea of a Universal God, accepting the truth that the God of Israel is the God of all people, Gentiles as well as Jews. St. Peter in particular as head of the new Church, as first Pope, had to come to the realization that Jesus had done something unique, that Christianity was not a national religion, that it was meant for everyone. This was a real struggle for Peter. God the Holy Spirit had to hammer this reality into his head. The first reading of this Mass, from the Acts of the Apostles, is a case in point. Cornelius, a Roman soldier and a Gentile, wanted to become a Christian. And so Cornelius had an audience with Pope Peter. Inspired by the Holy Spirit Peter embraced the outsider and encouraged the other believers with him to do the same. Cornelius was baptized as a Christian without the need to first FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR PETE AND CORNY be circumcised as a Jew. Because there is only one God, we are all actually one people. As our one true God excludes no one from His love, so we too must never exclude anyone on the basis of race, color, nationality, religion, place of birth, or any other element that tends to separate people. In the villages of Willow Springs and Lemont there are presently Masses in Polish, Slovenian, and Lithuanian. The Church is Universal. In fact, Catholic and Universal mean the same thing. All sins are serious enough. But prejudice of any kind is a contradiction of what it means to be a Catholic. St. Peter was granted a vision to transform his outlook from narrow to broad. We have something even greater. At Mass we celebrate the Eucharist, which is the sacrament of the Body and Blood of the Christ given up for all of us, not just for a selected few of us. There is only one God and Father of us all. And His is a Universal Church. As members of that Church we are all in it together. HI MOMS! Happy Mothers Day to all of our Moms of all ages. On the occasion of this joyous celebration you are strictly forbidden to do anything that resembles real work. Today you should do what most of our elected public officials do every day. Nothing. The collection for St. James on the weekend of May 6, 2012 was $3, The number of May 6th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of May 5th and May 6th was 129. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $2, which averages out to $22.38 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 129 contributing families. She has built something more magnificent than any cathedrala dwelling for an immortal soul, the tiny perfection of her baby's body... The angels have not been blessed with such a grace. They cannot share in God's creative miracle to bring new saints to Heaven. Only a human mother can. Mothers are closer to God the Creator than any other creature; God joins forces with mothers in performing this act of creation... What on God's good earth is more glorious than this: to be a mother? On May 16, 2004, God gave the Church another heroic model for our times, in the newly canonized Saint Gianna Beretta Molla. Gianna was a pediatrician practicing in Italy in the 1950's often volunteering her services to the poor. She married Pietro Molla in They believed that marriage was their way, together, to sanctity. Their family, they hoped, would be a "little cenacle where Jesus may reign over all affections, desires and actions," as Gianna wrote Pietro. Three children were born in the first years of their marriage. Then, in 1962, after a series of miscarriages, Gianna began another pregnancy. Toward the end of her second month, Gianna started experiencing sharp pains; the diagnosis was a fibrous tumor in the ovary. A knowledgeable physician, Gianna knew the options: surgical procedures that would, directly or indirectly, take the life of her unborn child, or removal of the tumor in such a way that the pregnancy was saved, despite the ongoing risk to her life. She unhesitatingly made the choice for her child, the tumor was removed, and the risky pregnancy continued. Shortly before her delivery, she repeated her decision to her doctor: "If you have to choose, there should be no doubt. Choose-I demand it- the life of the baby. Save the baby." week after the baby was born Gianna Molla died from multiple complications involved in carrying her fourth child to term and giving her birth. In a world rife with confusions about the meaning of womanhood and the distinctive qualities of the feminine, Saint Gianna Beretta Molla exemplifies the unique heroism of women and women's distinctive vocation to love. Beyond her special importance for women, mothers, and those living the vocation of marriage, Saint Gianna's example sends a message to all of us. The Church celebrates her new saint in a cultural moment when "choice" usually means self-assertion rather than self-gift. Saint Gianna Beretta Molla made a choice: a choice for love, even unto death, because she knew that "choice" in the truly human sense means freely choosing the good. May her prayers at the Throne of Grace strengthen us in living and defending the Gospel of Life. Saint Gianna, Pray for Us!
