2 Page Two June 19, 2011 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR TODAY WE COUNT THE NUMBER OF GODS,, ONEO NE,, ONEO NE, AND ONE! Our names are very important to us. It pleases us when people remember our names. I remember the names of most of the kids who attend Mass here regularly, especially the girls. But I m beginning to struggle a bit with adult names, because I am now in the springtime of my senility. Our first name indicates who we are. Our last name indicates the family to which we belong. We are not just Jane or John. We come from the Doe family, the child of our parents and the sibling of our brothers and sisters. Each one of us is an individual. And yet each of us is a member of our own family. Both identities have special meaning to us. Even more important to us than our own names is the name of Jesus. It is a sacred name given to the Lord by the Angel before He was conceived. Although that name is precious to us it does not actually indicate the identity of the man from Nazareth. It does, however, designate His mission in life. The name Jesus means God Saves. The family name of Jesus, which is His from all eternity, is Son of God. Jesus asked His disciples the key question. Who do you say that I am? In his usual outspoken manner Peter blurted out: You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. The Master commended the apostle. Blessed are you, Simon, son of Jonah, for flesh and blood have not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. The disciples still didn t quite get it. To understand the whole of the reality required a revelation from the Father. This is my beloved Son. Father and Son from all eternity, that was the revelation. Jesus the Christ is not just an individual. He is a member of the Divine Family. But no where in the Gospels is the relationship within the Divine Family clearly defined, leaving the early Fathers of the Church to muddle around with this concept for three centuries. So do we Catholics worship three gods? Nope. Finally, the Mystery of the Holy Trinity was formulated at two ecumenical councils, at Nicea in 325 and at Constantinople in 381. Our Catholic Faith has many such mysteries. Like, for instance, there is the Mystery of the Holy Eucharist. How can the Body and Blood of Jesus the Christ be contained in a small flat wafer or in a spoonful of altar wine? During this earthly existence we will never know. The Mystery of the Holy Trinity is right up there in lack of comprehension with the Eucharist. The bishops assembled at those two councils offered an explanation. In God there are three persons, all equal and yet distinct. The Father is the first person who begets His Son, the second person in eternity. And they are bound by an everlasting love, the Holy Spirit, the third person. God is Father, God is Son, God is Holy Spirit. These are the personal names of God. And the names indicate the relationship. God is not all alone like some mighty potentate living in isolated and solitary splendor. God rejoices in the warmth of intimacy and the richness of relationships. God is Family. Obscure as the doctrine might be for our mere human brains, the truth of the Trinity is not abstract and without significance for us. God is eager to share His richness with us, to draw us into the intimacy which is His Divine Life. Through the Sacrament of Baptism we have been born into God s Family. We have become children in the Father s Child, His eternal Son who became human in order to lift us up to the level of the divine. We proclaim our belief in the Mystery of the Holy Trinity many times every day. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. GOD BLESS OUR PARISH, FR. ED GLEESON, PASTOR

ALBERTO ROJAS AS NEW AUXILIARY BISHOPS FOR THE ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO I am grateful to His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, for his appointing two priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago as auxiliary bishops here. The Rev. Andrew P. Wypych, pastor of St. Francis Borgia Parish, will serve as my vicar for Vicariate V of the Archdiocese and as liaison to Polish Catholics; the Rev. Alberto Rojas, pastor of Good Shepherd Parish, will serve as my vicar for Vicariate III of the Archdiocese and as liaison to Hispanic Catholics. The Holy Father s pastoral concern for the priests, deacons, religious men and women and lay ministers and all the faithful of the Archdiocese of Chicago is clearly evident in these appointments. Bishop-elect Wypych was ordained as a priest of the Archdiocese of Krakow in Poland in He came to Chicago in 1983 and was incardinated in this Archdiocese several years later. Bishop-elect Rojas studied for the priesthood in his native city, Aguascalientes, Mexico, and in the Archdiocese of Chicago, where he was ordained a priest in Both priests have served as pastors and associate pastors. Bishop-elect Wypych has also served as a Dean, and Bishop-elect Rojas was a member of the seminary formation faculty at Mundelein. Both will bring their dedication to the Church and her people to the office of Bishop. They will make visible in their ministry the love of God for his Church. 4 Page Four June 19, 2011 FATHER S DAY THANK YOU "Fathers, your face, your heart, is the number one glimpse your children have of the image of their heavenly Father." Today is a day to be thankful for fathers and all that they do and have done for us. As I remember my own father who went to his eternal reward several years ago, I remember how much he loved me, my mother, and our entire family. He was a wonderful provider for our family, of course, and to this day I can hear his voice saying, "Never miss a day of work." And, he never did. But more than that, I remember how he led our family in the faith - how he always drove us to Mass and insisted that all seven of us arrive there at least fifteen minutes before Mass began. I remember how he was actively involved in our parish and how he prayed and encouraged us to sing during Mass I love the things that he taught me: how to plant and care for a garden, how to dig up night crawlers and catch fish, how to peel potatoes the easy way, and how to appreciate beauty in nature and in the simple things in life. I am thankful for all the times he was patient with me: when I styled his thick, wavy hair with my brush and comb into every imaginable hairdo of the day, while he was watching his baseball games; and when I spent an hour in the bathroom trying to look beautiful. I remember all the fun we had: playing baseball as a family, going on picnics in the park, cooking out in our own backyard, having weenie roasts and bonfires. I loved the stories my dad would tell me about his childhood, growing up, his time in military service, and the stories of how he and my mom met (his first love) and married. One of the things that I loved about my dad the most was how much he loved my mom. He was physically affectionate toward her and never afraid to tell her how much he loved her. Of course they had arguments like all couples do, but they forgave one another and made up. They were married for 50+ years and I will never forget the deep love and devotion he had for her. As they got older, he cared for her physical needs. I am most thankful that he and my mom prayed for me daily. Today I am thanking God for such a loving and caring father. He possessed a deep love and devotion to our family and our Catholic faith. Happy Father's Day TO ALL FATHERS!

6 Page Six June 19, 2011 Registration opens for 2012 International Eucharistic Congress DUBLIN -- Registration has officially opened for the 50th International Eucharistic Congress in 2012, and organizers hope the event will help reinvigorate the Irish church. Delegates from some 70 countries met June 1-3 to hear plans for the events that Dublin Archbishop Diarmuid Martin described as a "vital element in the reform agenda of the Irish church." Participants at the June 10-17, 2012, congress will hear reflections, catechesis and workshops from leading prelates and theologians. A day devoted to ecumenical communion through baptism will be led by Anglican Archbishop Michael Jackson of Dublin. Cardinal Peter Turkson, president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, will preside at a day dedicated to reconciliation. That session will also be addressed by Richard Moore, who was blinded by a British army rubber bullet in Northern Ireland in Moore subsequently tracked down the soldier who fired the round and established a friendship with him. Other senior prelates who have so far been confirmed to lead events are Honduran Cardinal Oscar Rodriguez Maradiaga and the Cardinal Andre Vingt-Trois of Paris. Father Kevin Doran, secretary-general of the 2012 congress, said he expects around 25,000 people to participate in the catechesis and workshops and 80,000 to participate in the concluding Mass. Gregorian chant helps church express its universal identity, pope says VATICAN CITY -- In giving priority to Gregorian chant and to classical liturgical music, the Catholic Church is not trying to limit anyone's creativity but is showcasing a tradition of beautiful prayer, Pope Benedict XVI wrote. Music at Mass should reflect the fact that the liturgy "is primarily the action of God through the church, which has its history, its rich tradition and its creativity," the pope said in a letter marking the 100th anniversary of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music. In the letter, released by the Vatican May 31, the pope wrote that sometimes people have presented Gregorian chant and traditional church music as expressions "to be overcome or disregarded because they limited the freedom and creativity of the individual or community." But, he said, when people recognize that the liturgy does not belong to an individual or parish as much as it belongs to the church, then they begin to understand how, while some expressions of local culture are appropriate, priority should be given to expressions of the church's universal cul-
