2 Page Two November 25, 2007 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR OUR COUNTRY HAS A PRESIDENT BUT OUR CHURCH HAS A KING In 1925 His Holiness Pope Pius XI established this Feast of Christ the King on the last Sunday of every Church year in order to emphasize the regal splendor of Our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Back in the 1920s nearly all of the nations of Europe still had kings and queens. Some, like Great Britain, still have some form of a democratic monarchy. In the Europe of old subjects understood just how powerful that a king could be. The symbolism of kingship is somewhat lost on us Americans, because we haven t had a king since George III of England, a feeble-minded nitwit but not an evil man. King George got fired from his job as king of the American colonies back in 1776 with the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4. But this freedom would never have become a reality without victory in the War of Revolution, , led by another guy named George, General Washington. The freedoms that we enjoy became set for all time with the ratification of the Constitution in 1787, including separation of Church and State. Our country has a President but our Church has a King. Throughout the history of Europe there has been some really crazy, nasty kings like Boleslaus II of Poland who murdered Bishop Stanislaus in the Krakow Cathedral. There were also some good, wise kings like Edward the Confessor of England, my patron saint. By the time that he came to the throne Ed was already a very wealthy man because his greatgrandfather, grandfather, and father had all been kings. Ed, who had been raised at court, decided to give much of his own personal wealth and the wealth of the realm to the poor tenant farmers, an act that enraged the nobility who expected their sovereign to collect taxes for them. But wise old Ed knew that spreading the wealth around would provide for a stronger, more powerful nation. The landowners got together to depose Ed because he wasn t filling their coffers to the brim. As usual the rich didn t want to share their wealth with anyone; most especially they didn t want the peasants to have a share of the property. So a plot was hatched to have the army overthrow the king. The plot turned out to be a dismal failure because Ed had just given all the soldiers a big pay raise! The army remained totally loyal to the likeable king as well as forever grateful for his generosity and wise leadership. The soldiers fought to protect the land from foreign aggressors better than ever. And the rebellion was crushed without a sword being drawn. Because of both his wisdom and power Ed became a saint of the Church. Now what king could possibly be as generous and as wise and as powerful as Edward the Confessor? In the Gospel St. Luke describes the death of Jesus on the cross. As they (the soldiers) approached to offer him wine they called out: If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself. Above Him there was an inscription that read: This is the King of the Jews. By His death and resurrection Christ the king has shared with us the treasurers of His Kingdom and has provided us with His protection. Keep in mind, however, that the foster father of Jesus was a carpenter, not a king. And so, unlike King Edward the Confessor, Christ the King didn t have an army or any great material wealth to give away. But Christ the King gave away a gift that was more precious than all of the crown jewels of merry old England. Christ the King gave away His life. Christ the King gave away His life so that we, His subjects, could live. Christ the King gave away His life so that we, His subjects, could achieve our own personal salvation. And so the most generous, the wisest, and the most powerful king of them all was not Edward the Confessor of England. The most generous, the wisest, and the most powerful king of them all was our own king, Christ the King! When the Son of Man comes in His glory, He will be seated upon His throne, and all of the nations on earth will be assembled before Him. God Bless Our Parish, FATHER ED GLEESON, PASTOR

Due to the Thanksgiving holidays, the bulletin printer requires all bulletin copy be submitted ahead of the normal schedule. Therefore Our Weekly Offertory information will be delayed. The November 18th and Campaign for Human Development collections will be published in the December 2nd bulletin. EACH flower bouquet on the main altar costs $ Flower Offering envelopes are provided in back of church. Please be sure to fill in your name and the date of the flowers on the envelope. This year we have one flower chart that has two blank lines next to each date. If you want one flower bouquet, please fill in only one line with your name. If you want BOTH bouquets you must write your name on both lines. Drop your Flower Offering envelope in any collection basket or mail to the rectory. It is a Slavic custom to eat Oplatki (a thin, unleaven wafer, like that used for the Eucharist) on either Christmas eve or Christmas day before the main meal. As the wafer is broken, good wishes are exchanged. Wafers are sent by mail to absent family members so they know they are missed and thought about with love and good wishes. The Oplatki or Christmas Wafers can be purchased in back of church during weekend Masses. The cost is $5.00 per package. An envelope is provided in back of church and can be dropped into the collection basket. During the week Christmas Wafers can be purchased at the rectory during business hours.

We will be having a children s choir sing at the 5:30pm Mass on Christmas Eve. All school-aged children from K through 12 are invited to join us. Knowing how to read music is not required. We will have our first practice on Saturday, December 1 at 9:00am up in the choir loft. Prereaders please bring an older sibling to help you. This is just a fun time of singing some very familiar Christmas carols, and some kids will recite pieces of the Christmas story in between songs. We will also try to schedule a performance at an outside venue, such as a retirement home. HOLIDAY BAZAAR Alvernia Manor Retirement Home is having a Holiday Bazaar on Sunday, December 2nd from 11:00am to 4:00pm. There ll be bakery, games, refreshments and pictures with Santa. Join in for an afternoon of fun and holiday cheer at Main St., Lemont or call JOLIET CATHOLIC ACADEMY OPEN HOUSE Joliet Catholic Academy is a college preparatory high school, centered in faith and surrounded by family.
