2 Page Two February 28, 2010 We can look at Lent in one of two ways. We can see it negatively as a burden because we have to eat fish instead of meat on Fridays. No big deal for me! I like seafood plus tuna salad, macaroni and cheese, and cheese pizza. Or we can see Lent positively as an opportunity for personal growth through prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. Lent offers us the chance for the transformation of our lives. Just like Jesus we can become dazzling. White is right regardless of racial or ethnic background! Jesus took Peter, John and James and went up to the mountain to pray. While He was praying His face changed in appearance and His clothing became dazzling white. And behold, two men were conversing with Him, Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His exodus that He was going to accomplish in Jerusalem. Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep, but becoming fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. As they were about to depart from Him, Peter said to Jesus: Master it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, one for Elijah. But he did not know what he was saying. While he was still speaking a cloud came and cast a shadow over them, and they became frightened when they entered the cloud. Then from the cloud came a voice that said: This is my chosen Son; listen to Him. After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone. They fell silent and did not at that time tell anyone what they had seen. In St. Luke s Gospel for this second Sunday of Lent, the Paschal Mystery begins to be revealed. We read the story about Jesus going up on that mountain to pray. There He became transfigured. His face changed and His garments became dazzling white. And then there was that voice from the cloud. This is my chosen Son; listen to Him. This highly visible manifestation prefigured the glory that would come FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR WHITEHITE IS RIGHT! to Our Lord through His death and resurrection. The Church teaches us that it pleased God the Father to lead God the Son through suffering to joy, through humiliation to exaltation, and through death to life. That is the transfiguration of Jesus Christ. This is the transfiguration which is at the heart of Lent. And so Lent is, indeed, the time for us to become dazzling. The Father s plan for us is to share in the Paschal Mystery. We began our sharing through the Sacrament of Baptism. With the Son we died to sin so that we could begin a new life. It was a transformation for us. We were given a white garment to remind us that we had become like Jesus in His transfiguration. As the transfiguration of Our Lord was but a prelude to His resurrection, so baptism directs us to a future event. That event is our sharing in the glory of the resurrection of Jesus the Christ. The Body and Blood of the Son in the Sacrament of the Eucharist nourishes us on our way to the Father in our heavenly home. That is our destiny. At Mass we go in a processional line to receive Holy Communion, a symbol of a people who are on a journey. Patiently standing in line to receive Communion is a visible sign of our faith in the promise that Our Lord has made to us. Those who eat My flesh and drink My blood have life eternal and I will raise them up on the last day. As baptism begins our sharing in the Paschal Mystery, so the Eucharist will perfect and complete it. The Mass is our means by which we participate in the Paschal Mystery since the Eucharist is the sacrament of the death and resurrection of Our Savior. In the Mass we find the meaning and purpose of human existence. We come to the fullness of our likeness to the Son as the mature children of the Father. The collection for St. James on the weekend of February 21st was $3, Ash Wednesday was $ The number of February 21st Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of February 20th and 21st was 153. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $2, which averages out to $17.33 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 153 contributing families. Walking with Catholics who have Come Home In December and January there were 5 ½ weeks of television ads that invited Catholics to come back to the practice of the faith. That invitation has touched the hearts of hundreds of Catholics in the Archdiocese! As Catholics return to the Church, hundreds have celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation in the last month, some at special opportunities for Reconciliation while others have been returning to the Sacrament of Penance in their home parish. The next phase of Catholics Come Home Chicago includes a series of adult formation sessions held during the Season of Lent, called Homecoming: Catholics Renewing Their Faith. Parishes around the Archdiocese will continue to invite those Catholics who have drifted from the faith to come back and learn about the teachings and traditions of the Church. If you know someone who wants to learn about the Catholic Church, you can be that warm, inviting voice that says, If you ve been away from the Church for whatever reason, we invite you to take another look and come home. Often declared the Best Catholic theatre in the Chicagoland area, this year s performance, THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST, features the classic musical work by Dubois, incorporating the group s beloved performance troupe with a full chorus, vocal soloists, & orchestra. The event will be the premier Lenten performance experience in the area. This will be a unique and moving experience, surely to be remembered for many years. Conceived by Artistic Director and choreographer Simonetta Pacek, the Troupe seeks to evangelize through the arts while bringing to life their theme of Modesty, Beauty and Joy.
