Our faith filled community strives to bear witness to Jesus Christ by loving and serving one another to bring about the Kingdom of God. Mass Schedule Weekends: Saturdays, 5:30 P.M. Sundays, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30 A.M. Holy Days: 8 :15 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. Weekdays: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays: 8:15 A.M. Wednesdays: 7:00 P.M. Confession Schedule Saturdays: 4:30 to 5:15 P.M. Or by appointment. Baptisms Sundays after the 11:30 A.M. Mass by appointment. At least one parent must be a registered parishioner. Weddings Minimum eight months in advance. At least one partner must be a registered parishioner. Funerals For families of registered parishioners. For nonparishioners to be buried in our own cemetery. Religious Education Classes 1st through 8th Grade Tuesday evenings, 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. September through April. 2 Page Two October 14, 2012 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR THE STORY OF A FAT CAT C LIKE CLEO Some wealthy young guy in this Gospel wanted to change the direction of his life. Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? The answer wasn t all that surprising. Jesus recited half of the ten commandments. Teacher all of these I have observed from my youth. So what else? You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. So what happened about that change in direction? At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions. Forget it! Knowing the rich fellow s circumstances, Jesus had forced him to make a choice. It turned out to be a quick and easy decision. The gentleman in question may have had a big house with a two-car garage, several big screen televisions and a really elaborate stereo system or something like that. His possessions were like a mountain gap, separating him from the Christ. He saw his wealth as an obstacle much more than he could overcome. So he disappeared from the Gospel passage forever. We don t know about what happened to him. Maybe he had a change of heart, sold off all of his gold watches, came back to Jesus, and joined the disciples. Most likely not. Sometimes we get only one chance. Jesus pressed the matter with His disciples. It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God. Over the past two thousand years some men and women have positively responded to the invitation of our Savior. We refer to them as saints. They were the folks who really did give up all of their material possessions so that they could lead the holy lives of priests, hermits, monks, nuns, laity. Most of us are not all that eager to follow their example. Like the Fat Cat in the Gospel we too like our good stuff. (I have a fat cat by the name of Cleo.) But there is another way of viewing this Gospel. Jesus was more concerned with obstacles than with objects. He spoke to the Fat Cat about giving us his wealth because wealth was his problem, his preoccupation, his attachment. Jesus through this Gospel speaks to us about whatever it is in our lives that prevents us from becoming better disciples and more committed members of His Church. When we take the word of the Lord seriously, we will find that it is sharper than any butcher knife. It will cut out of us our useless attachments, our sins, our failures, and our obstacles to accepting the grace of discipleship. Each one of us has different obstacles. Maybe the obstacle is being selfish or arrogant or hostile, always wanting our own way, and being disruptive if we don t get it. Maybe it is being prone to gossip, taking delight in putting other people down or spreading silly rumors about them. When we make the right decision about eliminating obstacles to discipleship we will be following the path that leads us to God the Father through the loving embrace of God the Son. The collection for St. James on the weekend of October 7, 2012 was $3, The number of October 7th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of October 6th and October 7th was 112. OCTOBER IS THE MONTH OF THE ROSARY All are invited to join our Altar & Rosary Sodality who will lead the recitation of the rosary in our Lady of the Forest Grotto after the 8:30 a.m. Mass on all 4 Sundays in October. If the weather is inclement the rosary will be recited in church.

4 October 14, 2012 The Children of the Night Are Back! Page Four Our annual parish Halloween party for both adults and kids will be held in Sag Hall on Saturday, October 27th. The time for youngsters will be from about 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. Scary cartoons will be shown. We could still use some volunteers to assist by setting up and taking down. Pizza, munchies, candy, and refreshments will be available for humans. Monsters will not be served. Tasteful costumes are optional for tots. The costumes can be worn to the 5:30 p.m. Mass. Families who attend the evening Mass can stay up late and not need to get up in the morning. Unfortunately this aging zombie needs to rise early on Sunday. Right outside the hall door we will keep a blazing bonfire to ward off evil spirits. Two ponies will be out in the cemetery to provide rides for tots who are not too scared. Really brave tots can wander through the cemetery looking for witches and warlocks. It gives a new meaning to the term children of the night. Adults and High School students only will be responsible for driving the tots around the grounds. Recently we had an incident where a tot driver had an accident and cracked the frame of the golfcart. That cart is now as dead as the folks in the cemetery. Adults can stick around much later than 9:00 p.m. Horrific movies will be viewed in the hall. As is our custom we need volunteers to join the St. James National Guard. Training in boot camp will be brief. Guardsmen will be deployed around the parish perimeter in order to protect the innocent from prowlers. These fresh troops will reinforce the professional security. Men and women who wish to serve their parish can contact Deacon John. Please provide your own weapons, that is, flashlights. And now some startling news. Vampire bats have been seen coming out of the church bell tower late at night. What can this mean? Don t hide under the bed, Fr. 6 Page Six October 14, 2012 Summit, Ill., June 30, Dear Father Geraghty: A LITTLE ST. JAMES HISTORY James F. Mallon, son of John and Ellen Mallon, was born February 14, 1869, at Willow Springs, Ill. He was baptized and received his religious training in the Sag Church. He was educated at the Maple Hill school. James worked on his father s farm until shortly after his marriage to Julia A. Cassidy in 1892, when they moved to Chicago, Ill., where he worked for the Chicago Elevated Lines. Later he joined the Chicago Police department and worked there until the time of his death. James and his wife had six children, three of whom are still living. They are Loretta A.W. Jennings, and Julia M. In 1905 James and his family returned to Willow Springs to make their home. He died August 13, 1919, and was buried in the Sag cemetery, August 15, John O Brien, undertaker. A Purgatorial Shrine to his memory has been donated to the Sag church by his wife. James wife, Julia Cassidy Mallon, daughter of Michael and Julia Cassidy, was born in Lemont, Ill., June 24, She was baptized and received her religious and elementary education at St. James Academy, Lemont, Ill. Later she attended the Chicago Normal teachers college. After her graduation she obtained a position as teacher in the Maple Hill school, where she taught until the time of her marriage, on July 20, 1892 at the Sag Church. She served as manager of the Illinois Bell Telephone Co., for 15 years, at their office in Willow Springs, resigning in 1927, to move to Summit, Ill. She died August 12, 1928, and was buried from St. Joseph s Church, Summit, Ill., to the Sag cemetery on August 16, 1928, Fredrick s and Hayes, undertakers. John Mallon, son of James and Isabella Mallon, was born in Ireland in He came to America and located on a farm in Willow Springs, Ill., in In 1862, he enlisted in Company F., 100th Illinois Volunteer Infantry and participated in the battles of Murfreesboro and Chickamauga, in which he was wounded by a gun shot in his skull. He was honorably discharged June 9,, In 1867 he married Mrs. Ellen Williams, daughter of Eugene and Bridge McGovern. This union was blessed with three children: James E., John H., and Charles F. Mr. Mallon s chief occupation was farming. He served the town of Palos as clerk for six years. He died in Chicago in 1902, and was buried from the residence of his son, James, at the Sag cemetery. A window to his memory and a station to his wife s memory, are now in evidence in the Sag Church. Julia and Loretta Mallon. LOOK TO THE SAINTS ST. SYMPHOROSA PARISH, 6125 S. Austin Ave. on Thursday evening, October 25, from 7:00pm 9:00 pm in the school hall. As fellow seekers and companions on the journey of life, we look to the lives of the saints using some of the reflections of r. James Martin, S.J. and the images of the stained glass windows of St. Symphorosa Church, as well as the portraits included in the Shrine of the Saints of the Americas at St. Barnabas Church. Our goal is to come to recognize the saints as real people who have successfully walked the challenging road we now walk. We will also look to ways we can invite these Christian heroes and heroines to be our spiritual companions on life s journey. Year of Faith has begun!
