2 Page Two April 19, 2009 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR SIX STRAIGHT YEARS OF GOD S FORGIVENESS In the year 2000 our late Holy Father, Pope John Paul II, declared that for all times the Sunday after Easter be celebrated as Divine Mercy Sunday. The celebration was promulgated for every single parish, mission, shrine, and chapel on earth. Finally in 2004 this wee bit of a parish joined all of the other institutions on the planet. Better late than never! On Easter Sunday morning the Risen Christ made salvation possible for all of us believers by overcoming death on the cross by rising from the tomb. On Easter Sunday night the Risen Christ gave all of us the means by which we can actually achieve that salvation. St. John, apostle and evangelist, was an eyewitness to the events of Easter. On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them: Peace be with you. When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again: Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you. And when He said this He breathed on them and said to them: Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained. On the evening of His Last Supper Jesus gave to us, His followers, the Sacrament of the Eucharist. So Holy Thursday is the anniversary of the Mass and of the Priesthood. On the evening of Easter Sunday the Risen Christ gave to us, His followers, the Sacrament of Penance. So Easter Sunday is the anniversary of Reconciliation. Divine Mercy comes to us through that sacrament. The Lord was intent on granting to His Church the power to forgive sins because forgiveness must come first in our relationship to God the Father. God the Son is our resurrection and our life. But sin is an obstacle to that life. In fact, Mortal Sin is not life; it is everlasting death. So Jesus is the Great Healer. The most serious sickness that we face is not heart disease or cancer. It is sin. The disease of sin must be overcome before all else. Jesus wants us to love one another, but the number one stumbling block in front of this love is sin, such as false pride, selfishness, and self-promotion. Sin must be eliminated so that we can become the loving people that God the Father wants us to become. God the Son forgives us from our sins through the life of His Church. And He does this in three different ways. The first way is the Sacrament of Baptism. The waters of Baptism wash us clean from all sins, whether we are adults or babies. Through Baptism we are born again to begin a new life as children of God. The second way of forgiveness is active participation in the Sunday Liturgy. At the beginning of every Mass is the Penitential Rite. This is an opportunity to have our Venial Sins forgiven. Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy. The third and most complete way is the Sacrament of Penance itself. When we confess our sins in sorrow, we hear the comforting voice of the Christ through the person of the priest: I will absolve you from your sins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. This is the sacrament that is absolutely necessary for the forgiveness of Mortal Sins. On the night of His Resurrection, having triumphed over sin and death, Jesus granted to His new Church the ministry of forgiveness so that the power of His life, His healing, and His love might penetrate our lives and transform us into a new people. We at St. James now celebrate six straight years of God s forgiveness. Join us today. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament runs from 1:00 to 3:00pm with the Divine Mercy Chaplet recited at 3:00pm and with Benediction at 3:30pm. The Easter Lilies were made possible by our many CONTRIBUTING PARISHIONERS OF ST. JAMES PARISH. The collection for St. James on the weekend of April 5th 2009 was $3, April 12th 2009 was $1, Holy Land collection was $ The number of April 5th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of April 4th and 5th was 165. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $3,0145 which averages out to $18.27 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 165 contributing families. The number of April 12th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of April 11th and 12th was 113. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $2, which averages out to $18.28 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 113 contributing families. BLESS YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED AND VALUED SUPPORT. St. James is celebrating DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY at all of the Masses this weekend of April 18 & 19. The Scripture readings and the homily of that day are on the infinite mercies of Jesus and the graces we can receive from observing this day. After 11:30 Mass on Sunday, April 19th starting at 1:00pm until 3:00pm we will have adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. At 3:00pm we will recite The Divine Mercy Chaplet. After reciting the Divine Mercy Chaplet, we will end the service with Benediction. In this time of spring and new life, we invite you to consider stretching your faith to make it possible for others to grow in theirs. People with mental retardation, autism, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and learning problems need a different kind of program to come to know Jesus. The SPRED program is developed specifically to meet their needs. St. Patrick in Lemont has 5 children waiting for this program to begin in the fall. They need volunteers men and women and have only two so far. Training will be provided so one is comfortable in SPRED. Join them on Wednesday, April 29th at 7:00pm in the parish center of St. Alphonsus parish on Walnut St. in Lemont for more specific information. Dear Parish Members, Our Sunday bulletin is a primary way we use to communicate with you. Through our arrangement with the J.S. Paluch Co., the parish does not pay for the bulletin printing, which saves us thousands of dollars every year. Our bulletin is supported through the generosity of the advertisers many of whom are our own parish members. Most are members of our local community.
