Our faith filled community strives to bear witness to Jesus Christ by loving and serving one another to bring about the Kingdom of God. Mass Schedule Weekends: Saturdays, 5:30 P.M. Sundays, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30 A.M. Holy Days: 8 :15 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. Weekdays: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays: 8:15 A.M. Wednesdays: 7:00 P.M. Confession Schedule Saturdays: 4:30 to 5:15 P.M. or by appointment. Baptisms Sundays after the 11:30 A.M. Mass by appointment. At least one parent must be a registered parishioner. Weddings Minimum eight months in advance. At least one partner must be a registered parishioner. Funerals For families of registered parishioners. For nonparishioners to be buried in our own cemetery. Religious Education Classes 1st through 8th Grade Tuesday evenings, 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. September through April. 2 Page Two May 12, 2013 From the first reading: When He had said this, as they were looking on, He was lifted up, and a cloud took Him from their sight. From the Gospel: So then the Lord Jesus... was taken up into heaven and took His seat at the right hand of God. The key word in both passages is up. Because of the Scriptures we mere mortals picture our heavenly home as a place that is up. The purpose of our lives on this earth is to eventually go up, not down. Catch my drift? Today, Ascension Sunday, we are celebrating the feast of Jesus going up. We visualize Him going home up there. Christ the priest is present and active during the celebration of the Mass in four different ways. It is the Son Himself who leads us up during the worship of the Father. First, in and through all of us who gather in His name, the Son prays and sings to the Father. And He urges us to look in that same direction with Him, up toward the Father. Second, the Savior acts in and through an ordained priest, like this elderly country curate, who offers the sacrifice in His name and who is the sign of unity which Jesus prayed for at the Last Supper. Third, He speaks to us through those members of the laity who read the Sacred Scriptures at Mass, the folks who we refer to as lectors. Along with the priest or the deacon who preach the homily, the lectors provide us with the Word of God. Through them and through the preachers the Son announces that He is the way to the Father, the truth we must believe, and the life that we must live. Fourth, through the Eucharist the Son draws us to Himself to offer perfect thanks and praise to the Father. The Son perpetuates for us His sacrifice of the Cross so that we may share in it and join Him in the last words of His life. Father into your hands I commend my spirit. FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR UP In the second reading (Option A) St. Paul instructed the Ephesians that Jesus the Christ had gone up, and then explained to them how His Ascension would affect the Church. In accord with the exercise of His great might, which He worked in Christ, raising Him from the dead and seating Him at His right hand in the heavens, far above every principality, authority, power, and dominion, and every name that is named not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things beneath His feet and gave Him head over all things of the Church, which is His Body, the fullness of the one who fills all things in every way. Participation in the Mass is our chief duty and supreme dignity as Catholics. And just like Our Lord we too wish to ascend up to heaven at some point in the future. Our attendance at Sunday Mass prepares us for that moment. DOWN Settle down, you Moms! On this Mothers Day there will be no cooking or cleaning or washing or any kind of work. The Mothers Day intentions for all of our living and deceased Moms, which are in this bulletin, will be read during the petitions of the 11:30 a.m. Mass. The collection for St. James on the weekend of May 5, 2013 is $4, The number of May 5th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of May 4th and May 5th was 134. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $3, which averages out to $25.70 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 134 contributing families. BLESS YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED AND VALUED SUPPORT. We celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13 th. On this day in 1917, Our Lady made her first appearance to three shepherd children, Jacinta (age 7), Francisco (age 9) and Lucia (age 10), at Fatima in Portugal. She appeared to them once a month from May through October. The lives of the three children of Fatima were entirely transformed by the heavenly apparitions. While fulfilling the duties of their state with the greatest fidelity, those children seemed now to live only for prayer and sacrifice, which they offered in a spirit of reparation to obtain peace and the conversion of sinners. They deprived themselves of water during the periods of great heat; they gave their lunch to poor children; they wore around their waists thick cords that even drew blood; they abstained from innocent pleasures and urged one another to the practice of prayer and penance with an ardor comparable to that of the great saints.
