Schoovans, July 11, 2016 THE RETURN OF CASUISTRY: (In the aftermath of the Synod on the Family) one perceives the return of casuistry, believed to allow moralists to examine and resolve matters of conscience. Certain moralists intend to offer solutions which please those who have recourse to their superior knowledge. Among the casuists of yesterday and today, the fundamental principles of morality are eclipsed by the (frequently divergent) opinions pronounced by these grave spiritual advisors. The disinterest with which fundamental morality is now viewed leaves the way open for the introduction of a positive law, which removes standards of conduct from any remaining reference to the fundamental rules of morality. The casuist, or neocasuist, has become legislator and judge. He cultivates the art of confusing the faithful. Concern for the truth, revealed and accessible to reason, is now of no interest. Ultimately, the only interest will be in probable positions. Through probabilism, one proposition is open to contradictory interpretations. Probabilism will make it possible to blow first hot, then cold, for and against. Forgotten is the teaching of Jesus: Let your word be "Yes" or "No"; anything more than this comes from the evil one (Matthew 5:37; 2 Corinthians 1:20). However, each neo-casuist will go with his own interpretation. The tendency is toward a confusion of propositions, duplicity, double or triple truth, an avalanche of interpretations. The casuist has a divided heart but intends to be a friend to the world (Judges 4:4-8). Progressively, the rules of behavior proceeding from the will of the Lord and handed down by the Magisterium of the Church are languishing in decline. The moral assessment of acts can therefore be modified. Not content with toning down this assessment, the casuists wish to transform the moral law itself. This will be the task of casuists, confessors, spiritual advisors and, on occasion, bishops. All must have a concern to please. They must in consequence resort to compromise, accommodate their arguments to the satisfaction of human passions: no person must be rebuffed. The moral assessment of an act no longer depends on whether it conforms to the will of God, as made known to us by Revelation. This depends on the intention of the moral agent and this intention can be modulated and molded by the spiritual adviser who supports his followers. In order to please, the spiritual adviser will have to soften the rigor of the doctrine handed down by tradition. The pastor will have to adapt his words to the nature of man, whose passions are naturally leading to sin. Hence the progressive relegation of references to original sin and grace. The influence of Pelagius (a monk of British origin) is evident: Man must save himself and take his destiny into his own hands. Telling the truth forms no part of the role of the casuist, who must captivate, present a line of argument which is engaging, curry favor, make salvation easy, delight those who aspire to have itching ears. (2 Timothy 4:3). In short, the eclipse of the decisive contribution of the Revelation to morality is paving the way for the investiture of the casuist and creating a space favorable to the installation of a government of consciences. Space is shrinking for religious liberty, as offered in the Scriptures to the children of God and inseparable from adherence to faith in the Lord. Let us therefore turn to an analysis of examples of areas in which the actions of the neo-casuists of today emerge clearly.

3 Eighteenth Ordinary Penitent Pilgrimage: In reparation to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary for our sins, the sins of our families, and sins of the whole world. Pilgrims will be going through the Holy Doors at The Shrine of St. John Paul II in Willow Springs, in a state of grace (confession, receiving Holy Communion). Total indulgence of our sins is granted as stated by Pope Francis in the Year of Mercy (December 8-- November 22, 2016). We can offer the indulgence for ourselves, or one deceased soul in purgatory. Also say: One Our Father One Hail Mary Creed And Memorare (For the intentions of Holy Father to receive the total indulgence) As a special guest Archbishop Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki (former secretary to St. JPII) will be with us on this pilgrimage and reciting Holy Mass at the Shrine of JPII once we get there. Archer Ave, Lemont, IL To: Shrine of St. JPII, 116 Hilton St., Willow Springs, IL HOLY DOORS OF MERCY By Kate Eschbach The Chapel of the Holy Cross in Sedona is a pilgrimage site for a Holy Door during this Jubilee Year of Mercy. When I found out there was a Holy Door in Sedona, I wanted to be sure we each walked through the door and fully understood what it meant. To walk through a Holy Door, if you are wanting to receive the plenary indulgence, there are a few things you need to do. Fulfill the usual conditions of having the interior disposition of complete detachment from sin Receive sacramental Confession and the Holy Eucharist. Pray for the intentions of the Holy Father. Just the word indulgence sends many people into a tizzy. There is so much misunderstanding around this word. I converted to Catholicism in college, so many things still seem new to me. The more I learn and understand about the Catholic faith, the deeper I fall in love, and the more humble I become about my past misconceptions and misunderstandings. I wanted to really, really understand the word. This means, I spend hours looking up definitions and church teaching, instead of just going with what I ve heard or think I know. It usually results in me wondering why the word was so misunderstood to begin with. At a very elementary level, when you confess your sin, you are forgiven. But here is the thing what about the punishment for the sin? You ve received forgiveness, but there are still consequences to your actions. An indulgence is the cancellation of the debt of punishment. Catholics believe there is a concept of purification between death and heaven. We call this purgatory. Since there are no minutes, days, or years in God s time, it is hard for our human nature to understand. We want desperately to have a checklist of punishment owed so that we can click it off and spend as little time in purification as possible. We want to run to Him, our Savior, and dance for joy, weep with amazement, stand in silent awe, and hold onto our Father forever. I hope you have the chance to visit a pilgrimage site this year. They are for everyone! God s Mercy continues to be a mystery to me. He pours out His mercy out freely to all of us, every single undeserving, selfish one of us. Thank goodness. Bill Donohue (comments on attacks on the Catholic Church) VIOLENCE ABROAD, VANDALISM AT HOME The terrorists who beheaded the elderly priest in Normandy, France did so in the name of ISIS; two nuns and two lay persons were taken hostage, one of whom is near death. The Muslim madmen who stormed the church during Mass were shot dead by police. We also have problems at home. Hatred of the Catholic Church in America has turned ugly this month with a series of violent attacks. In Providence, Rhode Island, vandals smashed a custom, handcrafted pulpit, debased a statue, and stole property. Las Cruces, New Mexico is home to several incidents of vandalism, including smashing a stained-glass door, damaging the altar, and desecrating Communion hosts. In St. Louis, a large statue of Our Blessed Mother was smashed, and a door was spray-painted. Vandals have struck many times in Lebanon, Missouri, breaking statues, and decapitating others. Two churches were targeted in Redding, California, including an estimated $70,000 in damage to a stained-glass window Human feces was smeared on statues, the crucifix, a Bible, the baptismal font, and adoration chapel in Bowling Green, Missouri The most egregious non-violent attack on Catholics this month was the firing of a Catholic employee at Macy s who expressed his reservations about a policy allowing men to use the women s bathrooms; the security guard said he would abide by the policy, but was fired nonetheless. From beheadings abroad, to desecrations of the Eucharist at home, the assaults on Catholics are gaining momentum. And now that Macy s is engaged in religious cleansing, Catholics risk their livelihood for merely holding to beliefs that offend the Macy s Thought Police. Perhaps those running for president would like to address the new barbarism. Catholics would surely like to hear from them.
