2 Page Two April 26, 2015 From the Desk of the Pastor Finding the Family in Marriage If you keep up with news in the Catholic world, you undoubtedly are aware that Pope Francis has called for a Synod in Rome to discuss important themes of our modern world. On the top of the list is the theme of the family. You are also aware that there is an issue being discussed that is sure to be a topic of heated debate. It needs to be stated that heated debates are nothing new in the church, even among clusters of bishops and cardinals. Debates have always been apart of church councils. What is new or novel is the topics of those debates. So allow me to clue you in to what one of the hotter of the hot topics that is already part of the Council preparation. Cardinal Walter Kasper has shared a suggestion which will undoubtedly be received with great praise by many non-catholics and not a small number of progressive Catholics. He suggests that the long standing discipline of people who are not married in the Catholic church be dropped. He points out that the process known as annulment is so difficult that it renders it meaningless or even contrary to the message of love we find in the Gospel. As you may realize, this topic is large. It impacts many people and requires a lot of thought and, divine inspiration. It is my hope to probe more deeply into this issue in future bulletins. It deserves a great deal of attention. If it is addressed well, it can do a great deal of good for our church and society. If it is addressed poorly, it has the capability of initiating a new schism or break within the Body of Christ. The first point I believe needs to be said is that Cardinal Kasper s book, The Gospel of the Family is making the same common mistake that is so easy to make when we talk about the sacrament of Holy Matrimony. Put very simply, this common mistake is: the reality of marriage is considered solely or at least primarily as the wedding ceremony done in church. That is to say, marriage is that public ritual two people do in a church that creates a legal bond between the two people at the end of which they receive a marriage certificate. Catholic marriage certainly involves this. In fact it requires this. But to believe that the marriage ceremony fully captures the essence of marriage is like believing one captures the essence of baseball simply by buying a ticket, entering the stadium and spending the whole game in the concourse buying and eating everything in sight. Why do I say this? Because it is obvious to one who really understands baseball that the essence of this game is played out on the field. Runs, hits and errors make up the essence of baseball. You need to get into the stadium to appreciate the game, but getting into the stadium is just the pre-requisite. So what captures the essence of marriage more than the Wedding ceremony itself? What mistake is Cardinal Kasper making? Put very simply, the essence is human sexuality. Cardinal Kasper s meditation on marriage and his subsequent suggestion miss this point completely. Next week, this mistake will be spelled out more clearly. Can you anticipate what follows from this? Unlike Other Nations, Fr. 3 Fourth Sunday of Easter Page Three Zacchaeus House Update 1. I have been meeting with Four men that are hoping to get one of the two open rooms in the house. 2. The house has seven men in house, seven in after care and one in a assisted living facility. 3. I drove up to Skokie to visit Kyle Brown before Easter because the last time we spoke on the phone he did not sound good. The next week Kyle's mother called and said he was placed in the hospital. Both his mother and caseworker saw that he was not doing well. He is now in a assisted living facility and all his clothing and furniture are in storage. His mother asked for prayers for Kyle so he can recover fast and adjust to his new medication. The goal is for Kyle to get stable and return to independent living. Reminder: Kyle is dual diagnosis alcoholic and mentally ill. 4. April 25th I will be meeting with the new men in the Diaconate formation at the O'Hare-DePaul campus. I will be talking to them about Zacchaeus House and recruiting for summer interns. JAMES & FAYE GOSNELL Catholic Charities Mother s Day Daria had no income, and lived with her children in a condemned building. Catholic Charities brought the family to one of our shelters. We helped her find work and permanent housing. She and her children were among the 991 individuals we sheltered last year. Please give to Catholic Charities on Mother s Day to help homeless families get back on their feet. Learn more at How marvelous it would be if, at the end of the day, each of us could say: today I have performed an act of charity towards others! - Pope Francis SHROUD OF TURIN ON DISPLAY; CITY READIES FOR VISIT BY POPE, PILGRIMS: TURIN, Italy (CNS) -- A thin white cloth draped over the glass-covered Shroud of Turin was pulled down and billowed to the floor, marking the official opening of the venerated icon's exposition to the public. The unveiling came during a Mass held in the city's cathedral of St. John the Baptist April 19 in the presence of a small group of dignitaries, religious and lay faithful. "We have put ourselves in the wake of generations of pilgrims" who come to contemplate the shroud, and "it will do us good to feel like we are drops in the river... of a humanity in need of God, of his affectionate mercy," Archbishop Cesare Nosiglia of Turin, papal custodian of the shroud, said in his homily. Pope Francis authorized the public display of the shroud to help commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of St. John Bosco, a 19th-century priest from the Turin region who was a pioneer in vocational education, worked with poor and abandoned children and founded the Salesian order. The pope was scheduled to visit Turin June and was to venerate the shroud. After reciting the "Regina Coeli" prayer in St. Peter's Square April 19, the pope said he hoped venerating the shroud "may help us all to find in Jesus Christ the merciful face of God and to recognize it in the faces of our brothers and sisters, especially those who suffer most."
