2 Page Two June 14, 2015 From the Desk of the Pastor Inalienable Right to Life Words Abraham Lincoln could very well share with us modern Americans... I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to be with you. Since 1865 I have followed the fortunes of my countrymen from up here in the beautiful life. Our greatest happiness here is the vision of the All Holy, but in that vision we also see people and places most familiar to us. I have followed your vicissitudes from that Good Friday in Ford s theatre until now. It seems to me that there are times of agony in every generation. In mine, the great agony over the inalienable right to liberty, in yours the agony over the inalienable right to life. We deplored a bloody war of brother against brother. You deplore a war against unborn children. During our war well over a million men lay in their graves. But now, you kill more than three times as many innocents in one year as we did in four. I remember the debates we had before and during the war. There were so many false arguments on both sides. Judge Douglas had a number of them. Much debate revolved around the Dred Scott Decision of Seven to two, the Supreme Court had voted that negroes are not persons. So now, you debater the Roe Decision of 1973, in which again by seven to two the Supreme Court has voted that the preborn are not persons. By these laws, you can do with negroes and the preborn whatever you please. But unjust laws are no laws at all. As Justice Byron White said so well, they are but exercises in raw judicial power. I encourage you to look again at the Declaration of Independence where we see a God given and inalienable right to liberty for the negro and a God given and inalienable right to life for the preborn. If America is to endure you must dedicate yourselves again to the realization of this conviction in private and public life, in all your institutions and in all your laws. But I have now spoken more words that I did at Gettysburg. Perhaps the reason is that my agony for my country is even greater now, if that is possible. Our war was waged in the open to the thunder of cannonades and the corpses lay rotting in the sun until we could bury them. But your slaughter is silent and invisible and in numbers far greater. My fellow Americans, I am loathe to close. I can only implore the All Holy to grant you wisdom and to have mercy upon one and all. Abraham Lincoln An introduction in Fr. book: The Ashes That Still Remain, on sale at today s Civil War reenactment. Our Your group gave a fine farewell to the wonderful Missionaries who shared their faith, their love of the church and friendship in Christ. If you are a graduating 8 th grader or a high school student who has faith and friendship to share, come to our welcoming evening, Sunday, June 28 th at 6:30pm at Sag hall. 3 11th Ordinary Sunday Page Three AP: NUMBER OF ABORTIONS IN U.S. HAS GONE DOWN SINCE 2010: WASHINGTON (CNS) -- An Associated Press survey of abortion in the United States this decade has revealed that the number of abortions has gone down by 12 percent since The news was welcomed by pro-life advocates. "It's important to realize, first of all, that the factors accounting for this are multiple, complex and often hard to measure," said a June 7 statement from Father Frank Pavone, the national director and chairman of Priests for Life, based in Staten Island, New York. But Father Pavone added, "The primary reason well may be the abortion industry itself," which he said "has been imploding for years." One factor cited by AP in its survey was the continuing decline in the rate of teen pregnancy. While no new numbers have been issued since those for 2010, the 2010 figures were the "lowest level in decades," according to AP. The AP study showed that some states had reductions as high as 15 percent. It said that while some states with the pronounced drops were among the 31 states that had passed laws this decade restricting access to abortion -- singling out Ohio, Missouri, Indiana and Oklahoma -- some states that maintained unrestricted access to abortion also experienced 15 percent reductions, among them New York, Washington and Oregon. "For so many women on both sides of the debate, there is lingering physical and psychological damage, on top of regret and heartbreak," said Janet Morana, cofounder of the Silent No More Awareness Campaign, which invites women to speak publicly about their abortions. "Women are listening, and they are choosing life," she added. PHILIPPINE BISHOPS URGE VOTERS TO REJECT 'CORRUPT' POLITICIANS IN 2016: MANILA, Philippines (CNS) -- The country's Catholic bishops urged voters to reject "notoriously corrupt" politicians running in next year's national elections in a pastoral letter sent to parishes. The bishops, in the letter read at Masses June 7, also sought to remind the voters that voting was not merely a political right, but "a moral obligation," reported the Asian Catholic news portal ucanews.com. "While politicians plan and strategize (and) find ways of circumventing the law against premature campaigning, the church cannot be remiss in its obligation of forming the consciences of Catholic and Christian voters," the bishops said in the letter, which was signed by Archbishop Socrates Villegas Lingayen-Dagupan, president of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of the Philippines. The letter called on the public to "vote for the right reasons... not because you have been paid... but because you trust a person to lead the community and to lead the country." The bishops also urged voters to end political dynasties by not voting for candidates from the same family who want to perpetuate their family's hold on public office. "There is no monopoly on ability for government, and truly no one in government is indispensable," the bishops said. The letter cited criticisms that previous church efforts to educate voters had come too late to be effective. "It may never be again said that we spoke too late," the letter said. POPE OFFERS 'STONE AGE' TIPS TO YOUTH FOR LIVING THE DIGITAL WORLD WELL: SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (CNS) -- Whether you still stick to books or magazines or get everything online, Pope Francis said all media should encourage and edify -- not enslave. "Back in my day -- the Stone Age -- when a book was good, you read it; when the book was bad for you, you chucked it," he told hundreds of youth in Sarajevo June 6. The pope ended his one-day visit to the capital of this Balkan nation meeting with young people of different religions and ethnicities who volunteer together with the archdiocesan St. John Paul II Center. He set aside his prepared text and told the young people he would rather take some questions. One young man said he read that the pope had stopped watching TV a long time ago, and wanted to know what led him to making that choice. The pope said he decided back in the middle of 1990 to stop because "one night I felt that this was not doing me good, it was alienating me" and he decided to give it up. He did not give up on movies, however. When he was archbishop of Buenos Aires, he would go the archdiocesan television station to watch a recorded film he had picked out, which didn't have the same isolating effect on him, he said. "Obviously, I am from the Stone Age, I'm ancient!" POPE URGES THOSE WHO HAVE MADE MISTAKES TO 'TURN BACK' TO JESUS: VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Anyone who has taken the wrong road in life can "turn back" and experience the mercy of Jesus, Pope Francis told tens of thousands of mostly young pilgrims about to set off on an overnight walk. Everyone has fallen and made mistakes, but is it important to "get up right away and keep walking," the pope said in an audio message played June 6 as the pilgrims prepared for Mass. "This can happen to every one of us," he said. "If you take the wrong road, turn back. Turn back because there is the mercy of Jesus. The mercy of Jesus forgives everything, always waits for you, always loves you," the pope told those participating in the 17-mile walking pilgrimage from Macerata in central Italy to the Marian shrine in Loreto. About 100,000 people took part in the pilgrimage June 6-7. Recovering an ancient tradition, a Macerata priest organized a pilgrimage in 1978 for students about to end their school year. The pilgrimage has grown with the support of the dioceses of Macerata and Loreto, the Communion and Liberation movement and local Catholic organizations. In his message, the pope said "pilgrimage is a symbol of life."
