Archer Avenue Lemont, Illinois (Ph) (Fx) Website: Facebook: OCTOBER 21ST TWENTY-NINTH NINTH ORDINARY SUNDAY Founded in 1833, St. James at Sag Bridge is the sole country parish of the Archdiocese of Chicago serving a growing community of Catholics who come together to worship God through the celebration of the Eucharist and traditional devotional activities within truly unique and beautiful surroundings. Our faith filled community strives to bear witness to Jesus Christ by loving and serving one another to bring about the Kingdom of God. Parish Boundaries The Village of Willow Springs, The Village of Burr Ridge (Cook County only). Unicorporated Lemont Township along Archer Avenue, Bell Road, and Route 83. Mass Schedule Weekends: Saturdays, 5:30 P.M. Sundays, 8:30, 10:00, 11:30 A.M. Holy Days: 8 :15 A.M. and 7:00 P.M. Weekdays: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays: 8:15 A.M. Wednesdays: 7:00 P.M. Confession Schedule Saturdays: 4:30 to 5:15 P.M. Or by appointment. Baptisms Sundays after the 11:30 A.M. Mass by appointment. At least one parent must be a registered parishioner. Weddings Minimum eight months in advance. At least one partner must be a registered parishioner. Funerals For families of registered parishioners. For nonparishioners to be buried in our own cemetery. Religious Education Classes 1st through 8th Grade Tuesday evenings, 6:30 to 8:00 P.M. September through April. 2 Page Two October 21, 2012 Two of the twelve apostles had the same name. They were known as St. James the Greater and St. James the Less. One was taller than the other. The James who appears in this Gospel from St. Mark was James the Greater, brother of the apostle/evangelist, St. John, and patron saint of this parish. The two sons of Zebedee had a request. Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you. Here it comes! He replied: What do you wish me to do for you? They answered Him: grant that in your glory we may sit one at your right and the other at your left. The pair wanted front row seats in heaven! What a couple of egomaniacs! Not too surprisingly the other ten became indignant at James and John. Jesus quickly deflated the egos of James and John. You do not know what you are asking...to sit at my right or at my left is not mine to give but it is for those for whom it has been prepared. Keep in mind that at this point in the public ministry of the Christ that James and John had been with Him for only a short time. So what mighty deeds had James and John accomplished to deserve front row seats in heaven? None. St. James the Greater needed to become St. James the Less. St. John, a youngster in his early teens, didn t even know what the Master was talking about. The consistent teaching of the Lord was that His followers had to be humble and not proud, that they must be willing to serve others, not dominate them. Whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR DEFLATE THOSE EGOS! Immediately the brothers were forced to adjust their attitudes. The example of Jesus the Christ was even more powerful than His teaching. The Son of God, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, left His throne in heaven to become one of us. He was humble because He was thinking, not of Himself, but of us. He became human, so that He could become our Priest, Our Savior, the One to whom we can confidently turn for mercy and help in time of need. It was this good example that Jesus told His apostles about in the Gospel. The Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve. This thinking is a lot different that what we frequently run across in our society. Take care of number one. In your face. Every time that we come to Mass we experience yet another testimony to the humility of Jesus the Christ. The Savior comes to us in Holy Communion, not in the trappings of royalty or amidst the trumpet blasts of the angels in heaven. Instead He comes as humbly as possible. He willingly transforms ordinary, simple bread into His Body; and He changes plain altar wine into His Blood. He does so in order to be at our service, not merely to give us food and drink, but to be Himself our spiritual nourishment. Forget those who think that they are better than we are. We have the teachings and example of the Son of God who was willing to give His life as a ransom for many. GOD BLESS OUR PARISH, FR. ED GLEESON, PASTOR

The collection for St. James on the weekend of October 14, 2012 was $3, The number of October 14th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of October 13th and October 14th was 137. 4 October 21, 2012 Page Four SCREAMS HAVE BEEN HEARD COMING FROM THE CEMETARY! It is near. Next Saturday, October 27, is the night of the living dead. Our annual parish Halloween extravaganza will take place in the hall from 6:30 to about 9:00 and in the cemetery with the pony rides from 6:30 to 8:30. Tots can wear tasteful costumes to the 5:30 Mass and to the party if they so desire. Fright night is for the whole family. Adults can stay a lot longer than 9:00 p.m. In fact we could still use some more soldiers for the St. James National Guard. Because of Deacon John s health problems this elderly ghoul needs more help than usual. Dale will bring the pizza. Volunteers are needed to get candy, munchies, pop, cartoons, and movies. Volunteers are also needed to take down from Religious Education, set up for the party, serve, take down from the party, and set up for the Religious Education. Ghostly lanterns will have to be set up on the tombstones. Someone will have to light and control the witch s bonfire. Golfcarts must be driven by adults and teens, not by tots. Naturally we try to scare the wits out of everyone except the really small tots. It would be great if we have some adults and teens willing to gently walk the real little tots around the cemetery. Guardsmen need to supplement the security pros. Screams have been heard coming from the cemetery. After all it is the bewitching time of the year! Those noises in the back of the cemetery could be coming from earthly demons such as coyotes or from unearthly creatures such as the walking dead. There is only one way to find out. Wander our grounds on Saturday. Some tots have already advised me that they are too scared to go out there at night. OK. They can take their chances in the hall.
