2 Page Two July 18, 2010 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR M ARY WAS FULL OF IT. Martha and Mary were sisters. They had invited Jesus to their house so that He could get some needed R and R. The hosts had different roles to play. Martha did all of the dirty work, cooking and cleaning. Mary did all of the talking; she was, in fact, just full of chit-chat. Martha thought that the arrangement would be more equitable with Mary responsible for more chores and less gab. Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me. Jesus got involved in the sisterly squabble, kind of. Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part of it and it will not be taken from her. Very diplomatic. The key question is this: what exactly was the part of Jesus that Mary was choosing? When St. Luke wrote that Mary sat at the foot of Jesus, he was not describing her posture but her relationship with Him. To sit at the feet of someone meant to be that person s disciple. Jesus the Christ was a revolutionary of sorts. In His day it was unheard of for any woman to be the disciple of a teacher, a rabbi. All of the eternal observances of the Jewish Faith were left to men. The Messiah, however, had come to call all people, women equally with men, children as well as adults, and even those who were considered to be sinners. They were all eligible for discipleship. Jesus insisted that Mary had chosen the better part of Him. She had made the right choice. She had understood His invitation and had accepted it. Of course, someone had to prepare the meal if they were ever going to have anything to eat. And that task fell to Martha who felt that her place was in the kitchen. Maybe Martha went a bit overboard with the pretzels, potato chips, and dip. Maybe she could have gotten by with one or two entrees. In any case Jesus wanted Martha to be His disciple too. In fact, He wants all of us all of us to be His disciples. Mary represents all of the women of the Church. She can also serve as a role model for men, because we all have the same calling, to offer Him the warm hospitality that He had experienced in the Bethany home of Martha and Mary, to listen to Him as intently as Mary had, to make Him the priority of our lives as Martha did, and to allow nothing and no one to deprive us of our relationship with Him. In the first reading of this Mass the prophet Abraham proved himself to be a highly gracious host like Martha and Mary would later be. He provided hospitality to three strangers who turned out to be Angels, preparing for them a fine meal of beef, rolls, curds, and milk. Maybe he also went a bit overboard with the pretzels, potato chips, and dip. Like Abraham, Sarah, Martha, and Mary we also must provide hospitality for the Lord. At Mass we sit at the feet of Jesus the Christ. We focus our attention on Him, hear His words in faith, absorb it and apply it to our lives. Then we are nourished with a sacred food, the Eucharist, which is prepared, not by Martha or Abraham, but by Jesus Himself. Some of us may find the example of Mary difficult to imitate. After all the busy work of Martha is physically hard but mentally easy. We can allow the preoccupations of daily living to distract us from hearing and following the teachings of Our Lord. There is a temptation to let the false values of this society turn aside the truths of our Catholic Faith. At Sunday Mass we sit at the feet of Jesus. This wee bit of a church becomes our Bethany, the place where we learn to become true disciples of Jesus. God Bless Our Parish, FATHER ED GLEESON, PASTOR

The collection for St. James on the weekend of July 11th was $3, Zacchaeus House Sharing was $1, The number of July 11th Offertory Envelopes handed in the weekend of July 10th and 11th was 157. The amount of money coming out of those envelopes was $2, which averages out to $18.02 per envelope. Our many thanks to the 157 contributing families. BLESS YOU FOR YOUR CONTINUED AND VALUED SUPPORT. THEOLOGY ON TAP July 11 Aug. 8, 2010 A speaker and discussion series for women and men in their 20s and 30s, married and single. When was the last time you asked yourself, What s the meaning behind this? This summer, 56 parishes and student centers throughout the city and suburbs are opening their doors to young adults in search of meaning. For the 30 th consecutive season, exciting speakers will present challenging information and lead thoughtful discussions about key young adult faith and relationship issues. Theology-on-Tap begins on Sunday, July 11, and will be hosted on Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday (in Spanish) evenings for four consecutive weeks throughout the Chicagoland area. Cardinal Francis George will host the finale celebration on Sunday, Aug. 8. Mass at Holy Name Cathedral begins at 3 pm. The Picnic will be held after Mass at the Cardinal s residence from 4:30 7:30 pm. In honor of this year being the 30th anniversary, all present and past participants of Theology-on-Tap are welcome at the Mass and Picnic August 8. 5 DO YOU KNOW HOW THE APOSTLES DIED? M ATTHEW Suffered martyrdom in Ethiopia, killed by a sword wound. M ARK Died in Alexandria, Egypt, after being dragged by horses through the streets until he was dead. LUKE Was hanged in Greece as a result of his tremendous preaching to the lost. J OHN Faced martyrdom when he was boiled in huge basin of boiling oil during a wave of persecution in Rome. However, he was miraculously delivered from death. John was then sentenced to the mines on the prison island of Patmos. He wrote his prophetic Book of Revelation on Patmos. The apostle John was later freed and returned to serve as Bishop of Edessa in modern Turkey. He died as an old man, the only apostle to die peacefully. P ETER He was crucified upside down on an x-shaped cross. According to church tradition it was because he told his tormentors that he felt unworthy to die in the same way that Jesus Christ had died. J AMES James the leader of the church in Jerusalem, was thrown over a hundred feet down from the southeast pinnacle of the Temple when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. When they discovered that he survived the fall, his enemies beat James to death with a fuller's club. * This was the same pinnacle where Satan had taken Jesus during the Temptation. J AMES THE GREAT Son of Zebedee, was a fisherman by trade when Jesus called him to a lifetime of ministry. As a strong Sixteenth Ordinary Sunday Page Five leader of the church, James was ultimately beheaded at Jerusalem. The Roman officer who guarded James watched amazed as James defended his faith at his trial. Later, the officer walked beside James to the place of execution. Overcome by conviction, he declared his new faith to the judge and knelt beside James to accept beheading as a Christian. B ARTHOLOMEW Also known as Nathaniel was a missionary to Asia. He witnessed for our Lord in present day Turkey. Bartholomew was martyred for his preaching in Armenia where he was flayed to death by a whip. A NDREW Was crucified on an x-shaped cross in Patras, Greece. After being whipped severely by seven soldiers they tied his body to the cross with cords to prolong his agony. His followers reported that, when he was led toward the cross, Andrew saluted it in these words: 'I have long desired and expected this happy hour. The cross has been consecrated by the body of Christ hanging on it.' He continued to preach to his tormentors for two days until he expired. T HOMAS Was stabbed with a spear in India during one of his missionary trips to establish the church in the subcontinent. J UDE Was killed with arrows when he refused to deny his faith in Christ. P AUL Was tortured and then beheaded by the evil Emperor Nero at Rome in A.D. 67. Paul endured a lengthy imprisonment, which allowed him to write his many epistles to the churches he had formed throughout the Roman Empire. These letters, which taught many of the foundational doctrines of Christianity, form a large portion of the New Testament. The apostles are a reminder to us that our sufferings here are indeed minor compared to the intense persecution and cold cruelty faced by the apostles and disciples during their times for the sake of the Faith. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: But he that endureth to the end shall be saved. Matthew 10:22

If you already haven t done so it would be an idea time to get your personally inscribed grotto stones. Why not honor those special people in our lives with a gift that will last a lifetime. Or perhaps if you have recently lost a loved one, have them remembered with a lasting engraved stone in their memory. We will be taking Grotto Stone orders now. We expect to have any new engraved stones ready and installed by mid to late September.
