2 Page Two March 8, 2015 Immaculate Conception Heart of the Holy Spirit On this 9 th day of our 33 Days to Morning Glory we read in Fr. Gaitley s book, Two hours before St. Maximilian Kolbe s arrest by the Gestapo, he penned the single most important theological reflection of his life. It was nothing less than the answer that had eluded him.. the answer to the question... Who are you, O Immaculate Conception? St. Maximilian shares a magnificent insight into our Blessed Mother that when truly grasped definitively solves the great dilemma cited by critics of Marian devotion, both Protestant and Catholic. Devotion to Mary is always met by the charge, Why are you giving to Mary some kind of divine quality? His answer is surprising. It is unavoidable to deny that the Immaculate Conception is divine because the Immaculate Conception is at the heart simply the Holy Spirit. That s the perfect answer. So while we contemplate this incredible title Mary uses to identify herself, it becomes clear that we can accept two meanings to the term Immaculate Conception. The Holy Spirit is the uncreated Immaculate Conception while Mary, the chief boast of our human race is the created Immaculate Conception. The bible is so clear that Mary becomes the Mother of Our Lord, by means of the Holy Spirit. This insight shatters every thought and memory of our merely natural wisdom regarding conception to teach us that such an ordinary and profound human experience is in fact an insight into the very nature of God. The uncreated Immaculate Conception is the One who for all eternity springs from God the Father and God the Son as an uncreated conception of Love and who is the prototype of all the conceptions that multiply life throughout the whole universe. The Father begets; the Son is begotten; and the Spirit is the conception that springs from their love. Truly, it seems to me next to impossible to have a grasp on the meaning of the third Person of the Blessed Trinity if you fail to see this part of Marian devotion. Mary isn t the Blessed Mother unless she is overshadowed by the Holy Spirit. We too must allow the Holy Spirit to overshadow us. Fr. Thomas Koys, M.A.,S.T.L. 3 3rd Sunday of Lent Page Three During Lent, pope offers handy tips for preparing for confession: VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- As Catholics are encouraged to make going to confession a significant part of their lives during Lent, Pope Francis offered some quick tips to help people prepare for the sacrament of penance. After a brief explanation of why people should go to confession -- "because we are all sinners" -- the pope listed 30 key questions to reflect on as part of making an examination of conscience and being able to "confess well." The guide is part of a 28-page booklet in Italian released by the Vatican publishing house. Pope Francis had 50,000 free copies distributed to people attending his Angelus address Feb. 22, the first Sunday of Lent. Titled "Safeguard your heart," the booklet is meant to help the faithful become "courageous" and prepared to battle against evil and choose the good. The booklet contains quick introductions to Catholic basics: it has the text of the Creed, a list of the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Ten Commandments and the Beatitudes. It explains the seven sacraments and includes Pope Francis' explanation of "lectio divina," a prayerful way of reading Scripture in order to better hear "what the Lord wants to tell us in his word and to let us be transformed by his Spirit." Rural areas provide fertile ground for crops and for priestly vocations: SALINA, Kan. (CNS) -- Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York says one of the virtues of rural life is the number of priests who come from country parishes. The Diocese of Salina would seem to confirm that. Of its 53 active and retired diocesan priests, 26 grew up in a parish of fewer than 150 families. Of the current seminarian class of 14 men, four are from rural parishes. Several priests who grew up in rural parishes all spoke to The Register, Salina's diocesan newspaper, of feeling a closeness to the land, nature and to God that, in turn, opened their hearts to the priesthood. "There is a natural closeness to dependency on God in the rural setting," said Father Kerry Ninemire, who grew up in St. Joseph Parish in New Almelo. "Our lives were so dependent on the elements that our minds were often naturally on God." Traditionally, he noted, rural families had larger families, and "in the past vocations tended to come from larger families." He also spoke of the closeness of rural parishioners. "That was very true for me. Unconsciously but nevertheless very true, I sought to find a place to experience that closeness in my adult life. The seminary experience provided that in my younger days, and I have found it in the priesthood with my brother priests, the sisters and the people of the parish," said Father Ninemire, who celebrates his 40th anniversary in the priesthood this year. Currently, he is pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Junction City and vicar general for the diocese. Shroud shows what pain Jesus endured for his flock, says speaker: PITTSBURGH (CNS) -- Donald Nohs, who is an expert on the Shroud of Turin, widely believed to be the burial cloth of Jesus, talked to a Pittsburgh audience about the evidence of authenticity for the shroud. Jesus' passion, Nohs noted, was much more than a physical suffering. It was the humiliation and embarrassment of being scourged in the nude in front of his mother and friends. The suffering Mary endured, he said, which is why she is our greatest intercessory in heaven. He asked the audience to bring Mary into their hearts and walk with her through the presentation. "There was no end to the humiliation," he said. "The embarrassment. The physical pain. No end." Nohs presented "Discovering Jesus in His Holy Shroud" at St. Paul of the Cross Monastery on Pittsburgh's South Side to a capacity audience of about 550 people. Nohs, director general of the Confraternity of the Passion International and president of the Holy Face of Jesus, is one of the world's leading authorities on the Shroud of Turin. He has studied the shroud for more than 50 years. The shroud's existence has been documented for centuries, but the invention of photography in the 19th century revealed that the image of a crucified man was actually a negative image. Profit is tool for measuring success, but people come first, pope says: VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Profit must never be a Christian's god, although it is one of the tools for measuring the effectiveness of business choices and the ability of a company to help workers feed their families, Pope Francis said. "Money is the devil's dung," the pope said Feb. 28, quoting St. Francis of Assisi. "When money becomes an idol, it dictates people's choices." Meeting with members of an Italian association of Catholic farm, credit, housing and shopping cooperatives, the pope urged the coops to remain true to their original inspiration of modeling an economy where the needs of the human person are the absolute priority and where sharing and solidarity are at the center of the business model. When unemployment rates are high and there are long "lines of people looking for work," he said, workers are easily exploited. They will accept long hours for low pay, knowing that if they don't they will be told, "If you don't like it, someone else will.
