2 Page Two April 13, 2014 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR A MISSION IS LIKE A RETREAT Why go to the St. James Mission? This is a question you maybe asking yourself so I d like to help you work through this dilemma. For many people going to church once a week on Sundays constitutes a pretty active Catholic life. After all, that s a lot more often than many of your friends and relatives who go a few times a year. It takes an extra effort to come three days in a row. And actually, if you consider coming for the Triduum, those three big days of Holy Week; Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil, that s six days in a row. Maybe we should allow camping out in the cemetery for those who wish? A Mission is like a retreat for people who can t take days off from work or sacrifice a whole weekend for a retreat. Attending a Mission is a Catholic tradition that goes back a long time. I haven t done enough research on the matter but I can imagine the three or four day parish Mission goes back to the early days of American life known as the Great Awakening. Catholic preachers had to defend Catholicism from all these popular revivals. Historians actually speak of two great awakenings. The first was pre-revolutionary War times and consisted of such fiery Protestant preachers as: Gilbert Tennant, from Pennsylvania, Jonathan Edwards, from Massachusetts, and George Whitefield from New England. I recently read that Jonathan Edwards, whose famous sermon, Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God was published all over Colonial America, was kicked out of his own pulpit by his congregation who figured his angry God needed some merciful revisions. He traveled to Western Massachusetts and settled in the little town of Stockbridge. You can read a little plaque there if you visit the quaint old Protestant church located in the town center. But the real notoriety of Stockbridge today lies off Main Street. It is the home of the national shrine of Divine Mercy. History does have its ironies. To illustrate how cautiously we should read information we find from public sources check out this quote from a website for teachers on US History. The Founding Fathers clearly demonstrated their opposition to the intermingling of politics and religion by establishing the separation of church and state in the first amendment to the Constitution. Because of this separation, the Great Awakening swept across the land. This is revisionist history at its best. First, the Founding Fathers didn t create a separation of church and state, but tried to protect churches from the state. Also, many local governments fought for control of the religious churches and schools. At first, whatever denomination was most dominant in the colony became the denomination that received tax money for its ministry. But I digress. The Second Great Awakening took place at the time of the founding of St. James at Sag Bridge, in the 1830 s. Preachers like Charles Finney (New York) and Barton Stone, whose sermons attracted an estimated 20,000 people to Cane Ridge, Kentucky, became household names. William Miller, whose followers started the Jehovah s Witnesses, did his share of fiery preaching. Miller famously predicted the end of the world in He later revised that date to After that, a more symbolic interpretation of the end of the world had to be conceived. When you look for common threads about these awakenings we find that the preachers all took an anti conventional or institutional religion approach. Often, the preachers would criticize and insult the very ministers that had invited them to come. Their anti-institutional rhetoric was most vitriolic when speaking of the Papists or simply Popery. There also was the common thread of the terrible sinful nature of America and the need to repent. So, why come to Fr. Lombardo s Mission this week? Well, if you admit that we need yet another awakening, and if you can see the problems of sin in our society and in our hearts, then doesn t a Mission make a lot of sense? But we need a good Catholic preacher. Fr. Bob is just the guy. Three days in a row can seem like a lot, but when it comes to the major issues of life, we all need more than a little. The late great Fr. John Hardon use to say, The future of America is in the hands of Catholics more than any other religious body. That s why I m praying we all are touched by Fr. Bob this week.

6 Page Six Second April Sunday 13, 2014 of Advent Page Five Pope declares by decree three new saints for the Americas: VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Without a canonization ceremony, Pope Francis declared three new saints for the Americas, pioneers of the Catholic Church in Brazil and in Canada. Pope Francis signed decrees April 3 recognizing: St. Jose de Anchieta, a Spanish-born Jesuit who traveled to Brazil in 1553 and became known as the Apostle of Brazil; St. Marie de l'incarnation, a French Ursuline who traveled to Quebec in 1639 and is known as the Mother of the Canadian Church; and St. Francois de Laval, who arrived in Quebec 20 years after St. Marie de l'incarnation and became the first bishop of Quebec. In declaring the three saints, the pope used a procedure known as "equivalent canonizations," which required a thorough study of the candidates' life and writings, fame of holiness and reports of favors granted through their intercession. Unlike a regular sainthood process, though, it did not require the verification of a miracle through their intercession, nor further studies by historians and theologians working for the Congregation for Saints' Causes. The three were beatified together by Pope John Paul II in The Brazilian bishops, who thought the decrees would be signed April 2 and planned local celebrations for that evening, have said they will celebrate a Mass of thanksgiving with Pope Francis April 24 in Rome 's Church of St. Ignatius. The bishops of Quebec have said they will celebrate a thanksgiving Mass May 18 in Quebec and hope to have a larger celebration with the pope in Rome in October. Pope, Britain's Queen Elizabeth have informal meeting at Vatican: VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- In their first overseas trip in three years, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II and her husband, Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, met April 3 with Pope Francis at the Vatican. The 30-minute visit of the 87-year-old queen and her 92-year-old husband demonstrates "the importance that she places on this relationship with the Holy See and on getting to know Pope Francis," said Nigel Baker, the British ambassador to the Holy See. The royal visit took place as the Vatican and the United Kingdom were marking the 100th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations. Formal ties were broken in the 1570s after Pope Pius V excommunicated Queen Elizabeth I, who had reasserted the Church of England's independence from papal authority. The Vatican described the meeting as "official, but informal," which explained why it was held in the studio of the Paul VI audience hall rather than in the library of the Apostolic Palace and why the queen was not wearing black. Instead, she arrived from a luncheon with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano wearing a light lavender skirt and jacket. The queen and prince arrived about 20 minutes late. After Pope Francis said, "Welcome," Queen Elizabeth said, "Sorry to keep you waiting; we were having a pleasant lunch with the president." Pope to young: Be honest, discover what you hold dear to your heart: VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Pope Francis told a group of young people to be honest with themselves and others and figure out what they hold dear: money and pride or the desire to do good. He also told them he has made plenty of mistakes in life, being guilty of being too bossy and stubborn. "They say mankind is the only animal that falls in the same well twice," he said. While mistakes are the "great teachers" in life, "I think there are some I haven't learned because I'm hardheaded," he said, rapping his knuckles on his wooden desk and laughing. "It's not easy learning, but I learned from many mistakes, and this has done me good." The pope spoke to six young students and reporters from Belgium, who were accompanied by Bishop Lucas Van Looy of Ghent. They video-recorded the interview in the papal study of the Vatican 's Apostolic Palace March 31 and aired an edited version on Belgian TV April 3. The young Belgians, including the cameraman, asked their questions in English, and the pope answered in Italian. The Vatican released a written transcript of the full interview April 5. When asked why the pope agreed to do the interview with them, the pope said because he sensed they had a feeling of "apprehension" or unease about life and "I think it is my duty to serve young people," to listen to and help guide their anxiety, which is "like a seed that grows and in time bears fruit." Jesus can raise everyone from the tomb of a dead, tired soul, pope says: VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- Come out from the dark cave of pride, sin and death and into the light of a new life with Christ, Pope Francis said. "Take away the stone of shame" that is keeping you trapped inside a life that is dead or painful and be raised up again by Christ, he said in a homily April 6. The pope also gave away thousands of copies of a pocket-sized edition of the Gospels, telling people to always keep a copy with them to read snippets every day while in line or while commuting. But he said it was probably best not to read while standing in a crowded bus because it was better to keep an eye out for pickpockets. The pope's remarks came during a late afternoon visit to the Church of St. Gregory the Great on the outskirts of Rome. Before he celebrated Mass, he met with young people, the sick and elderly and heard the confessions of a number of parishioners. In his homily and during his Angelus address at noon with pilgrims gathered in St. Peter's Square, the pope spoke about the day's Gospel reading from the Gospel of John (11:1-45), which recounts Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. When Jesus went to Lazarus' tomb, he asked that the stone sealing the entrance be taken away. He then "cried out in a loud voice, 'Lazarus come out!' And the dead man came out," the Gospel says.
