2 Page Two June 16, 2013 FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR JESUS HAD DIRTY FEET What is God really like? Is God distant, remote, inaccessible, far removed from us and from our world? Does God care about us or what happens to us? How can we possible know what God is like? The Church teaches us that we can learn about God by observing the life of Jesus the Christ. Jesus is God s divine Son, His perfect image and likeness. In the fullness of time God sent His only Son into our world. He became human like us in all things but sin. In His humanity Jesus is the plan which has taken on flesh and blood. We learn what God is like by looking at the person of Jesus. When we see Jesus in the Gospels and listen to His words we discover that God is a great lover, that He sent His Son to go in search of lost sheep, and that He welcomes us as the father welcomed the prodigal son. As He was dying Jesus prayed: Father, forgive them. He even went so far as to offer excuses. They do not know what they are doing. This alone answers all of the questions about who our God really is. In this Gospel we learn an extraordinary lesson. Jesus shows God as one who not only searches out sinners but uses every means to win our love. A Pharisee invited Jesus to dine with him, and He entered the Pharisee s house and reclined at table. Now there was a sinful woman in the city who learned that He was at table in the house of the Pharisee. Bringing an alabaster flask of ointment she stood behind Him and then began to bathe His feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them, and anointed them with the ointment. The Pharisee believed in God but had a limited understanding of how God operated in the world of humans. If this man were a prophet, He would know who and what sort of woman this is who is touching Him, that she is a sinner. He did not realize that Jesus was eager to forgive her sins so that she would respond with love. Jesus wanted to win her heart. Your faith has saved you; go in peace. Because much has been forgiven her, she responded with much love. God wants to win our hearts as well. He did not spare even His own Son so that our sins could be forgiven. At Mass we hear the words of the Son. This is the cup of my blood. It will be shed for you and for all so that sins may be forgiven. Of course, we understand that Jesus is speaking to us through the priest. We are the you for whom the Christ has shed His blood. All of us need to reflect on the enormity of the Father s love for us as seen in the cross of the Son. Happy are we because our sins have been taken away. So what does God want from us in return? Schoenstatt Girls Youth Rally Day Friday, June 21st at 1:00p.m. Visitation Catholic Church, Elmhurst, IL Will be held for Catholic girls ages The rally day will take place at Visitation Catholic Church in Elmhurst, IL. It will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will end at 5:30 p.m. The rally day is a day designed to draw young girls closer to the Blessed Mother and to discover the message of Schoenstatt. Throughout the day the girls will be looking at a specific theme: Called to be majestic, do you dare to learn. In the rally day, girls will have the opportunity to participate in fun activities, listen to a talk, do a craft, go to adoration, learn Schoenstatt Girls Youth songs, and meet other Catholic girls! In order to register, forms should be sent no later than two weeks before the rally day. HOPE AND FORGIVENESS: There were some interesting conceptions of sin prevalent in the time of the Hebrew scriptures. There was the belief that God punished sin immediately. Those who suffered disease or misfortune were, therefore, sinners getting their due from the Almighty. Today's first reading hints at another kind of God. When David admits his sin, Nathan declares, "The LORD on his part has forgiven your sin" (2 Samuel 12:13b). Here was not a vengeful God but a merciful God. What good news that must have been to David and those who, like him, could be honest enough to admit their sinfulness! Jesus is the good news of God's mercy and forgiveness incarnate. Without Jesus, perhaps the Good News would have been too good to believe, too difficult to imagine. But there he is in today's Gospel, the God-man, forgiving a sinner and declaring that she is forgiven because of her great love. There is hope, then, for the rest of us sinners, if only we love enough! Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG? The Pharisee in today's Gospel thought he knew who was bad and who was good. He looked at the woman who came to see Jesus and saw a sinner. Jesus saw a loving person who needed forgiveness. "Her many sins have been forgiven because she has shown great love. But the one to whom little is forgiven, loves little" (Luke 7:47). But when Jesus explains this in a parable, he seems to be saying that forgiveness is the cause of love. So which came first, love or forgiveness? Like the question about the chicken or the egg, the answer is both: forgiveness leads to love for God, but God's love is the source of all forgiveness. Notice how Jesus compares the woman and the Pharisee. By pointing out how little the Pharisee did to welcome Jesus, he reminds the man that he is a sinner, too. But the man doesn't recognize his own sins and so does not ask for forgiveness. That's why the woman experiences Jesus' love, while the Pharisee does not. Like the chicken or the egg, we might come to see God's love on a retreat or at a parish mission. Touched by that love, we seek forgiveness. On the other hand, we may feel that God is far from us because of our sins, but when we finally get the courage to confess them, we are filled with the joy of freedom from our sins. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION: June is the month most associated with weddings in the United States. Wedding celebrations always require some savvy planning, and people who have a talent for hospitality in the mix. At the wedding feast at Cana, the mother of Jesus was recruited to deal with some of the details of the banquet, and when a very understandable crisis arose, she did what she could to rescue the party. Anyone who has ever run out of ice, dessert, or table settings knows the stress! Slowly, the memory of Jesus Christ's blessing of this marriage feast led the Church to form a way to bless marriages. A thousand years ago weddings migrated from the family home to the doors of the church, where the celebration was held in public view. From this practice came a prayer called the "Nuptial Blessing," one of the most solemn prayers in our tradition. It is very much like the prayers by which baptismal water and chrism are consecrated, the ordination prayer over a priest, and the Eucharistic Prayers over bread and wine.
